Gidday all, was wondering if anyone can help me decide whether to purchase a hottop b or p, am new to home roasting and have read on the net reviews for both and was wondering if anyone out there prefers one over the other and which one would be best for me.

Re: Hottop B or Hottop p

I have been asked that many times. As the one who wrote the owners manual, I think I am qualified to answer.. * ;)

The "P" can be pre-programmed but once the program is started the user has little control over the profile. If you are the kind of person who is satisfied with a roast that is close enough as well as being the type who is satisfied with a set-it-and-forget it device, the "P should do well. This is sort of the chauffeur and automatic transmission thing.

The "B" does have an auto" mode, but it is a rudimentary profile. This roasted is best thought of like a real" roaster (Probat, etc.). Hottop has sold many of this model to small growers and small roasteries as a sample roaster because of its level of user-control. If you are a "hands-on" sort of person who strives for perfection, and wants each roast to be as precise as possible, and who likes to tweak little nuances in the process, the B is for you. This is a sort of Lambo and 6 speed stick with paddle shifters.

In either case, just as a reminder, a coffee roaster should never be left unattended when in operation... NEVER!

PS- I should add that I ave owned at LEAST one of every model of Hottop they have made, from the first pre-production model (which I kept) to the present time. From the time the first KN-8828B arrived I have never used the "P" again and sold it, but thats just me and may not be applicable to you.

But remember that any model of Hottop can be converted to a "P" or a "B" Including a "P" or a "B." The mainboard and control boards pairs are interchangeable. I believe that the "P" and "B" control boards are identical- just the control panel is different. All other parts are identical. The Hottop USA website has a lot more information on the subject.

It was the B for me, but with the recent upgrade of a digital multimeter and the coffee snobs softwear that I would highly recomend, I have found the factory temp guage to be inacurate.

Not sure if fitting one will void the warrenty, but I think I remember reading somewhere that Pullman Espresso can fit these without voiding the warrenty.

If you wnt a more hands on roaster, you will prob kill some beans, I know I did and still do (but the learning process will be enjoyable)
    then go for the B.

Im an owner of the P and Id recommend the B. Its in hindsight (aint it great?) that Ill concede that I wish I had the control over the roast that the B offers.

Thats not to say you cant almost match the Bs ability on the P with a bit of creativity. But the fact remains its a work-around. Ie youre compensating.

    Happy shopping.

You need to identify how you like to roast - Randys post should be helpful in deciding whether you want to set and forget (P) or maintain fine control (B). We sell mainly Bs, its certainly my panel of choice and on balance I think its a better panel, but the P does tick some boxes the B doesnt so for some the P is a better choice.

And yes we can fit a bean mass probe to the roaster at the time of purchase so you can enjoy the greater control this offers without voiding your warranty. *;)

And what happens when people like my myself want to add the bean mass probe after taking delivery Greg?

Will fitting the probe myself void a warranty?

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
You can fit a probe through the bean entry chute without any problems, there are guides on the web on how to do this and we do sell spare bean chute covers if you wanted to go down this path.

But if you want a neat install like we do then the unfortunate answer is yes. Thats the whole reason we started fitting them because the amount of disassembly required to do a neat install would more than void the warranty of even the most generous manufacturer! We can only offer this because were servicing the warranty on these units.

You can ship it back to us and we can fit it - freight will probably cost around $100 though (if you ask nicely and we let you use our freight account ;), double that if you want to send it as a no account customer) so youd have to take that into consideration.
