    Haiti Grand Cru

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Well,

I just roasted up my first batch of this (300 gm) in the Gene. I set the temp control to 230C and pressed the go button.

It never reached 230--the beans just kept swelling and swelling and the temp never got over 228! Ive had the temp thing happen with very chaffy beans that blocked the hot air exhaust but that didnt seem to be the issue this time, the beans just seemed to be soaking up the heat.

Anyway, 11.5 minutes in and the first snaps started--very loud and consistent. I gradually turned the temp down to 220 to slow the ramp into second. (This is my usual practice.)

I started to get smoke at just short of 15 minutes and the first snaps of 2nd started at 15.2 minutes, when I killed the heat and started cooling. The beans were a very even CS 9-10, and did I mention that they were HUGE?

I pulled my first ristretto a few hours later (I couldnt wait) and despite tasting a bit young it was a terrific drink. I like this bean. BTW the 19 gms of beans took up much more room than my usual African beans but ground down to just the right dose volume-wise.

    Hey Greg,
just done my first roast of these with the gene. They are huge beans [smiley=grin.gif]

160 for 5 mins then turned up temp to 240, like you found that the beans saoked up the heat, went to 245 for a couple of mins then backed off after first crack at 13 mins in, stretched the roast to 4 mins after, didnt get second crack.

Lovely colour and a very even roast. I will wait to see what they taste like - maybe!!

    And hey Greg - they are huge *[smiley=grin.gif] [smiley=grin.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=laugh.gif] [smiley=grin.gif] [smiley=grin.gif]
