Could not hear first crack (Gemadro)

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hiya all,

Went ahead and roasted some Gemadro. Set the heatgun (XU1) on lowest setting and roasted for about 5 mins. Ramped up to highest setting.

Problems was as follows. Never seemed to hear the first crack. Roasted up to 15 mins. Beans darkened. Still no sign of first crack. ??? ???

Tasting notes. Oddly enough not too bad. Proably a little too light a roast (hence no first crack). Think that these beans although small may take a while to roast.

Taste was pretty much as the description. Quite nice but with what Id describe as a citric background.

Off to try some more with a slightly different approach. Fun all the same!! :D

    Warren,

Even if it does not go off like a fire-cracker, you should still hear it if it has happened. I dont use a HG so I have no first-hand knowledge to assist, however, depending on the volume you should be at FC within 10 minutes. A risk in getting there too slowly is you bake the beans and turn them into useless rocks. Something you might consider is pushing it hard (hot and close) and take the roast right through to black and oily and see what you must do to get there while noting how long it takes. You then back off with subsequent roasts until you get to SC in say 12min to 16 min (depending on volume). Citrus/acidic characters means the roast is too short. Dark and acidic could mean too quick and point to the exterior cooking faster than the inside.

You should get a good response from other HG gurus here. Rich has a lot of experience with HG roasting.

    Cheers,

    Graeme

Re: Could not hear first crack (Gemadro)

    Warren,

I did 2.5 cups in the Convection Oven/Stir Crazy yesterday, and first crack was the loudest of any bean Ive done in it so far. It really was like corn popping, most of it happened within one minute - and the beans doubled in size as well. It was quite amazing to watch the increase in volume over such a short period.

This probably doesnt help much with HG roasting, but Id try ramping the temp up over 8 or so minutes, then going full blast from then on and see what happens.

    Regards,
    Phil

Thanks for the valuable input guys! *:D

Seems as though I may have been a bit hasty in my conclusions. Did the easiest thing. Grabbed another 250g and tried again.

The results this time?? Fantastic! Reached first crack in about 8mins and second not long after. *:D

Tried some 6 hours after roasting and it was very nice. Just as the flavour profile described it. Very good S/O espresso. *::)

Already learned a valuable lesson. Heatgun is not that good on first setting. I just use the second now and vary the distance that I hold it. Also helps to roast outside in natural light to see how things are progressing as opposed to doing it inside the garage. Flouro lights are a poor source for viewing.

    Cheers FB :)

Certainly a lot fresher than some of the roasted stuff Ive bought lately (roaster shall remain nameless) *;)

Actually its surpassed my expectations. Im hooked on this green bean buying caper. It really does work well. *Very interesting too :)

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
Very much like the argument of week old bread vs. bread just out of the oven.

    No contest ! ::)
