Not getting or not hearing 1st crack

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey guys,

I recently thought that I would branch into the home roasting and give it a try. I have had 2 attempts now with my brazil pulped natural which I bought off here. I am using a heat gun and stirring them myself with a spoon, but will have a BM in a few days time to make it easier! I am not hearing either 1st crack or 2nd crack and then have just stopped roasting after about 20ish minutes.

I have done 2 roasts now and havent heard anything with either of them, the 1st batch was under-roasted a bit but the second batch was ok, but I just had to go on what I was seeing!

Is this normal or is there something I am doing wrong!
    Cheers!

    Hi,

my guess is your not getting the beans to a high enough temp! To go with the bowl setup a cheap digital thermometer that will handle 250 degrees is worth it. Its how I started off a while back. FC will be in most cases obvious and will be a good crackle with your setup. Aim for FC at 10-12 minutes and to finish the roast at 16ish.

keep playing and remember colour is not everything.

So maybe try holding the heat gun closer to the beans then? Yeah I think I will invest in a thermometer too. Will have a look in Jaycar over the weekend.

Sounds like that is your problem, I used to run my heat gun on flat out with the nozzle just above the lip for a start and gradually bring it closer to about 3-4" above the beans till first crack then gradually raise it again until SC.

What I got was the $40 multimeter with temp probe from Jaycar which works well. Just make a metal clip to keep the thermocouple in the bean mass as you have your hands full with the spoon and gun ;)

Yeah cool, well I will give that a shot over the next few days then and see how we go! Hopefully will be a bit better once I get the BM :P

    Cheers
