    Sulawesi Rante Kapua Torajah

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
i had given this bean a go and decided it wasnt for me at this stage, but upon trawling through the threads in this great place, decided to give another profile a go. see the attached pic for the profile, i originally hadnt posted it up as i was unhappy with the roast vs what i had planned but after tasting the results i thought id share! basically i was going for a steady temp rise of 15/min while experimenting with airflow prior to first crack.

this is with a coretto with a top on it (thanks smokeydeck!). basically instead of having the fan on the heat gun on full i decided to have it on its lowest setting, and my plan was to do this until first crack. however with the amount of beans i put in, the heat gun couldnt provide the heat so i cranked the fan as i was worried about stalling the roast. so until 135 degs there was minimal airflow. at this point i also reduced the heat by 100 degs and fluked the roast going the right direction. then at first crack i didnt slow the roast as much as i wanted. as i had neither kept airflow out of the roast and not slowed it enough i thought not much of it.

so after doing this, and 10+ days later this bean has become a real eye opener to me. with a slow pour it is awesome with milk, real biting and lively with a zing, but i think the really magical thing for me was that as a faster pour it totally smoothed out and im sure it tasted subtle vanilla and buttery.

i havent done another roast of it yet, but my goal is still to give the original plan a go as i imagine somehting will change yet again

Looks very much like the roast profile I use for this bean.

With most beans I get the temp up high fairly quickly.
That didnt work for this bean. I now start lower, ramp slower and hit FC at a later point. As you said - "eye opener", a very nice bean once you get the right profile.

Ive really enjoyed both roasting and drinking this bean.

I actually roasted some on Monday and whilst its still a little too bright at this stage, the flavour still cut through milk beautifully.

Last time around i finished it by day 10 so this time around im going to give it a longer rest and see how it goes after two weeks.

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
i finally got around to drinking the results of this roast profile, and i finally say yay! . definitely a huge improvement, actual flavours when grinding and actual flavours when drinking! what were the flavours? well with my upbringing of weetbix and shredded wheatmeals i dont know, but it does now taste like there is some kind of spice, and also a sweetness. And the pour is quite thick, great feel in the mouth

im sure there is room for improvement/differences to be gained still, but compared to my previous roasts of this bean, this is a winner.
