My First Roast - Whirley Pop Jr (Hoyks Mark I, II & III)

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I did my first ever roast tonight - yay! I borrowed from Bwilks idea and purchased a Whirley Pop about a month ago and, after receiving my BeanBay order yesterday, put the new machine to work tonight!

It was very much a learning experience - put the beans in wayyyy too early so that first crack didnt happen until about the 20 minute mark (yeah, I know) and second crack at 25 minute mark. My worst problem was that CoffeeSnobs was down so I couldnt get to Bwilks tips and tricks, so just had to play it by ear.

Still, they came out at a nice 10 or thereabouts and Ill definitely refine my technique the next time!

Hubby only went through 2 transformers until giving up and getting out the electric drill. Hes now rebuilt the motor side of it and its running off a 7.2V radio controlled car battery... :D Meanwhile, while all this is happening, I had to stand there and hand-crank the drill head with nothing else attached to it (funnily enough, there are no pictures of that stage!)

    What fun!

Ive got to go and work out how "PhotoBucket" works, but in the meantime, heres a teaser or two...

Pic 1 - of the original set up before transformer no. 1 burnt out:-

Looks pretty good too Di.... 8-)

Considering this is your first attempt, and nearly thwarted at that, I think its an excellent outcome. Therell be no holding you back when all the bugs are ironed out of the drive system. Good one mate..... [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Well, held out until today and tasted my first ever home roast and it was beautiful! Even Hubby Hoyks said that he really enjoyed it and could taste chocolatey overtones.

Score one for Hoykies Harrar Haven!

As an addendum - Pete (Hubby) fixed the motor up, then promptly stripped out the spline in the middle of the cogs the next afternoon when using my coffee roaster to make popcorn in for the kids!

    (*sigh*)
