    Starter pack ordered!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Finally got around to ordering my CS starter pack. A quick trip down to Harvey Norman allowed me to acquire a Breville Crazy Popper.

Now I just need to wait for Wed/Thurs for the pack to arrive (curses for ordering it at the start of a long weekend!).

    Re: Starter pack ordered!

Well that was interesting. In the excitement of receiving my CS Starter pack I completely forgot to time my roast, so I went by smell & looks. The end result, was 100g of Malawi AA:

I used a Breville Crazy Popper, I believe FC occured about the 3.5 min mark, unsure on 2nd crack because I started to smell burning and got worried about setting fire to the popper on my first attempt.

A couple of questions for my fellow snobs however.
+ What do others think of the roast? Too dark? Too light? Too much chaff still on them? Ive broken open a couple and they seem to be roasted right through.

+ How long should I let them rest for? Im sorely tempted to try them now (90 min after roasting)

+ What should I store the roasted beans in? Will an airtight Tupperware container suffice until I can acquire something recommended by the Snobs?

+ Should I purge the grinder of all old (store bought) grinds first, or will only a smidge not matter? Ive got a query on my grinder here.

[s]And finally, what sort of Expobar machine do I infact own??[/s] Wait never mind, Ill shoot over to the Brewing Equipment forum for that question.

Ive cracked a few more open KK and some of the chaff is hiding a green section of the bean. Theres only been a few of those though, perhaps two in the 20 I opened.

Just realized the pic Ive provided had the flash on, heres a non-flashed pic:

Whats going on KK? First you spell bass base, now this. ;D ;D ;D
Dont worry, I was never offended.

Look a little light to me too.

Resting time is generally 5-7 days as a rule of thumb. But as said before you can use them as soon as they are cool.
A good idea is to try some every day and note the changes.

Storing beans is an ongoing debate. Most Snobs will use the snap lock bags with the one way valve in them. Squeeze the air out each time.

Its a good idea to purge the grinder. Grinds go off very quickly. Take a smell inside your grinder, if it really stinks it needs a good clean.

Congrats on your first roast. Im very keen and cant wait for my own!

A question for bass. Are the oneway valve bags re-useable? Just thinking for when I order some beans as to how many bags Ill need taking into account whether I can re-use them?

    thanks

Yes they are reusable & washable
However many of us use TGs method and place a freezer bag inside the valve bag as a liner that holds the beans, and the valve bag clean

Not a bad first roast for your first attempt, as already stated, try a shot now and then again in a couple of days.
Oh and use a timer next time ;)

    Re: Starter pack ordered!

Made my first shot of it today. Wasnt sure what to expect, so rather than making my usual latte I opted for a short black.

^ not having any latte glasses handy, I appropriated a whisky glass for the use of!

As such, Ive come to a conclusion. I have roasted coffee. AND IT IS GOOD! *:D :D :D

After tasting it and finding citrus flavors (i couldnt tell you what, it was like being hit in the mouth with tart fruits) little body and a clean finish, I found the old thread on Wahgi AA in Knockbox and was pleased to find Im not a total retard in identifying coffee. My cupping language needs work - Im currently eyeing off the rest of my Starter Pack as testing grounds.

Im looking forward to my second roast, possibly later today if it warms up. Ill be aiming for CS 9 this time I think, rather than the fluked CS 6 - 7.

Hrmm, maybe I should just place another bean order so I get my CS membership card to use on the next batch ;)

    +EDIT+
And Ive just realised I misspelt "Starter" when I originally made this topic. Doh!
