    Crazy Popper Starter! first roast!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    So....

Like many others who come here the natural progression and next step to enjoying life as a coffee snob is to home roast, so I had to give in to the temptation and buy a starter pack and a popper.

My starter pack arrived yesterday. Thanks Andy, next day delivery is wonderful :D. I picked up a Breville Crazy Popper but could not roast any last night due to rain and not wanting to get my nuts cut off by the missus for roasting inside.

So tonight was the night, I grabbed myself a box for the popper as it was a bit breezy outside. I warmed up the box by covering it and turning the popper on for about 20 seconds and let the popper cool down before I added the beans and hit go.

In all the excitement I didnt closely monitor the times.

First big crack was around 2:30mins in and I pulled a few seconds after the second crack (crackle/pops) started after silence about 4:30mins in.

Not sure how I went, it looks fairly even and cooled down with a sieve and a metal steamer.

This was 65g roast, lost a few beans due to no chimney which is the next step.

I chose the beans at random out of the 4, looking forward to roasting the peaberry and ethiopian as I love fruity flavours in the aeropress.

    Any tips so far?

    Cheers,
    Ros.

Well done Ros. That is inspirational. Ive got a crazy popper and fresh green beans (thanks Andy!) on the bench. Youve given me the rev up to try this. Your result looks fantastic. I hope my first roast is nearly as good as that.

    Well done mate!,

The obsession has begun, WARNING: You will soon be wandering the isles of Bunnings looking for the most random things, hunting through op shops for old breadmakers or Turbo ovens, and watching the junk on the side of the road for roadside pickup.....desperately looking for a desk to mount it all on......You have been warned ;D

nothing stopping you from roasting inside if you have a window you can open and a large fan, used to do that in the apartment I was living in until I moved

only issue was the damn chaff, got into every little bit of the kitchen but I managed to get away with it

    Heres a picture of mine.
The custom made chrome exhaust pipe and flame decals added some bling.

To get longer roast times you need to get more cold air in.

If you look at the grill under the Crazy popper youll see half the vent holes are fake.

Drill some extra holes or remove the whole bottom cover.
I recommend replacing it with some plastic mesh.

If that doesnt help enough you can get more radical but Ill leave that tip for now.

Re: Crazy Popper Starter! first roast!

Just an update on my roasts so far, did a few roasts during the days on the weekends where the sun was out and I have added a dual wall chinmey with the inner wall being a tin can and the outwall which holds the can in place is a steel shell of a thermal mug.

My roasts on the weekend were all pulled around 4:30 which I have tasted and the taste is quite green still and not much flavour.

So with that being so I have tried to increase my roast time by using a deskfan blowing air under the popper and did it at night with a lower ambient temp and a nice cool breeze.

Peru again with a 60g Roast, first crack at 3:30 pulled at 8minutes and cooled quickly with a big sieve and a fan underneath, sealed for degassing and these were roasted a bit darker at cs9 roughly without having a card.

So Im eager to try the longer roast out, hopefully I eliminate the green taste I am getting from those <5minute roasts.

When I did use a popper I modified it by drilling holes all over the place to increase air flow which seemed to increase roast time by a couple of minutes.

I actually removed the whole top half of my Crazy Popper for maximum effect rather than just drill a few holes.

In the end Id gone from typical 5 minutes to almost 15 minutes on a cold winters night.
10 minutes is achievable in warmer weather.

ROs if you look closely youll see the blanking plugs that hide the screws on the top of your popper.

    Try it without the top.
You can always put it back together.

Thanks man, I certanily will do.

Really want to hold onto the popper for as long as I can because I dont have the space for a corretto or ktto setup even though I wish I did.

if I can get 10minute roasts it should be sweet, what type of weight are you roasting with those roasts?

With the chimney (see pic above) - 100g.

Removing the base extended my roast times by 1 minute.
The topless version added up to 5 minutes.
Aiming a fan (on high) at the popper during the roast can add up to another 2 minutes.

My longest roast time was in 15 degree ambient temperature.

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
Ive been using poppers for about 18 months; the quantity (100g at a time) is convenient enough that I never have to worry about roasted beans going stale.

The only drawback is that it can be a bit stressful on the machine. Ive been through three Crazy Poppers, so I no longer use or recommend them. (Actually, I dont know if its just me, but I havent got a good record with any Breville appliances.)

I now use a Sunbeam Cornelius popper with the lid sawn off. So far its been great, but if the machine dies, Im going to try the heat gun and stainless bowl method next...
