    Which popper?

    Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    I`m not sure why but suddenly have the urge to roast my own beans. Can anyone advise me which particular brand to buy or not to buy ? Other question is how long do the beans need to be left "in the open" so to speak until you can seal them in a container?

    Welcome to the wonderful world of home roasting. Ive got a breville crazy popper that goes (RR$45) well and is used by a number of fellow poppers on this site. I think most beaners actually put their beans into a bag with a one way valve pretty much right away. Good luck with the roasting. Its very fun and easy to get amazing results. Its also very cost effective!

    As far as how long to leave the beans after the roast before placing them in a one way valued bag......I only wait long enough for them to cool right down, which only takes a few minutes especially by using a vacuum or fan to cool them down...or both...I had a laugh

    I have found that if you put them in the bag still warm that they tend to sweat a little as they cool in the bag. *

    I am a newbie though so still trying to learn.

    Crazy Popper is well designed. It had a thermal cutoff that prevents overheating and premature failure. But youll find yourself roasting three batches consecutively with no issues. May have to wait awhile before doing your fourth fifth and sixth (thermal cutoff resets when it cools down), but its no big worry.

    I vote Crazy Popper as I can answer any questions you have about one and give advice on non technical (easy) modifications.

    All I used was a screwdriver and a cutter. I think its safe, no exposed wires or anything and the center chamber is grounded by a wire.

    Sunbeam Cornelius , is the best Ive had so far.

    I have gone through any number of poppers over 10yrs for roasting. This one is as good as pop-a-saurus for longevity and toughness so far.

    The crazy popper isnt a bad unit either.

    Add another to the Crazy Popper list :)

    Ive also tried Tiffany and Black & Decker but find then a little bit low on oomph.

    Isnt a lack of oomph a good thing?

    I only get 5min+ roasts on cold days with the crazy popper...

    It was for me in the end as i was getting sick of doing 3 or 4 roasts to keep up with consumption.

    I found the Crazy popper could hold more without stalling the aggitation

    Thanks for all rhe advice. Got a popper made a chimney although some times the beans jump out, need a taller can I thnk. Have roasted about 1kg of beans so far and seems likea simple operation. I`m still thinking there must be more to this than just timing and listening for the cracks.

    I currently use a Breville Bratz popper.

    Some others have a switch that stops the popper working without the plastic lid closed.

    The Breville was on sale at one shop for about $50. When asked what their best price was they dropped it to $25 so I bought 4. I have passed some on to friends.

    The only modification I use is an Alaska Salmon can for a chimney.

    I fill the chamber up to the plated screw on the inside. About 150g of greens.

    Stir with a wooden spoon handle until they swirl.

    When the colour is right, cool and remove chaff with a collander and oven dishes.
