Quest M3 - My First Roast

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey All,

This roast is my second roasting experience ever. First was on a Gene cafe and this time on a Quest M3 on loan for the weekend. I sourced some greens from my local roaster so I haven't got a CS card to show with my picture. But i have shown their standard blend they usually use above the four roasts. From left to right are 2 Guatemalan Antigua and then 2 Columbian in roasting order.

Firstly, the Quest was a but tough to control at first but as they say, practise certainly helps leading to a much more controlled roast for the Columbians. Now i just need the patience to wait to taste...

Looks like a nice even roast Mike. But you're right - the proof'll be in the cupping!
Look forward to hear your thoughts on the results…

Please only use the Quest M3 behind an earth leakage device... it has the worst wiring I've ever seen in a domestic appliance (which is why it has no Australian certification) and I would hate to see someone or something get smoked by it.

Have fun but please be careful.

Thanks for the heads up Andy, will certainly look into the leakage device. Just a question you might be able to help me with, my ammeter only goes up to 5 whereas i've seen others go up to 15 or so. Does this mean mine is less powerful or is it just the gauge? I've attached a pic of mine.

    Thanks in advance

HI mwc, your ammeter looks identical to mine, up to 5. Up to 15 might be for US market? Nice looking roasts and I am sure you are having great fun, a nice learning curve from other roasters. What weight of green do you load? I do 225 gms and get lovely smooth curves and great tastes in the cup. In the last 3 weeks I have lowered my unload temp and time, results are much bigger flavour, lots more fruit in Ethiopian and Yemeni and some powerful Kenyan.

Thanks guys. I loaded 200g at 210 degrees. I got my nicest curve with the Columbian. 1st crack at 189 at 10min and pulled at 12 min at 196 just before 2nd Crack. Roast profile attached. This is the fourth roast in the picture.

I would've liked to drop the temp even more between 1st and 2nd crack too really develop those flavours but we'll taste and see.

Quest M3 - My First Roast

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
Well that columbian was very rich and smooth. Best extractions out of my 6910 yet! In terms of the other beans, the Guatemala was very nice especially with the two different profiles blended. The Kenya and PNG weren't too spectacular but I experimented with them in some blends and they were a nice addition. Can't wait to get hold of the roaster again!
