Hello fellow coffee snobbers. I have been studying up on my coffee knowledge for a few weeks now thanks to this forum. I was drawn here with a desire to make better coffee.
As a result, I immediately upgraded from my EM4800C to a second hand EM6910. I started making better coffee right away even with store bought beans. My next step was to source better coffee and I discovered that I could roast green beans at home with a popcorn maker and that I could purchase the beans from BeanBay.
My starter pack arrived this morning. I'm very excited to start roasting coffee. The only issue is the snap lock bag of the Ethiopian Gambella Sundried must have popped open in transit and the beans were loose in the coffee snobs bag. I don't think this will effect the freshness off the beans? thoughts?
I am off to Myer to get a popcorn maker this morning. I couldnt find a decent one at Target, Big W or Kmart. Will get either the Flutter Butter or the Licorice.

Short answer - no.
Green bean freshness would not be compromised by coming loose. In fact, a plastic snap-lock bag is not what you would normally store green beans in longer term, but are used in starter packs due to convenience and the intent that all beans from a starter pack are meant to be used up fairly quickly.
Green beans remain good to use for around 3 years if stored well. Basic rules are:
Don't let them sweat. EG: Store them in something that can breathe.
Try to keep them in a relatively cool place out of sunlight (and away from critters).
If the roasting bug gets you (and I've got a feeling it will), your next green bean purchases will come in the 2.5kg cotton bags. I personally store my beans in these bags within larger containers in my shed. Some people allocate space in their pantry, some people come up with purpose built solutions. There are many threads covering these issues, so you can have a look if/when you decide to start your own green bean stash.

Just got back from the store with my popcorn maker. I went with the flutter butter.
Mine popped open too, but its all good.. I got the cheap target $15 one, I've done 23 batches of 60-100g of beans in the past week or so, and have roasted all of the 2kg's from my Starter Pack, except for about 30-35g in 2 bags.
I wouldn't suggest spending any more than the Target one costs as there is every chance the machine could die on you and its better to replace a cheap one than it is to replace an expensive one. And the results most likely are really not going to be any different.
My last batch didn't seem to want to crack but still coloured up, so Project BM started yesterday. And the rate at which the wife and I are going through beans I'm looking forward to only having to do 1-2 batches a week not 8. Remembering you want the beans to age several days before you start using them.
Good luck, I have really enjoyed the roasting journey thus far it is extremely rewarding and even more so when others compliment your beans.
Highly recommend the Brazil Natural Pulp if you got some, they make abit more mess but hard to do a bad job on them and taste great the next day onwards.
EDIT: Also do 2-3 batches of the same beans and don't be put off if they aren't the same colour, so long as they are close you have actually made a SO Blend and the results should be awesome.
Get a notepad and pencil on the ready to start recording and tracking your roasts, and include ambient temp from a thermometer so you can work out the best time of day to get a slower roast and how the ambient affects your roast times/colour.
I did four roasts in it today with the Brazil beans. I learnt a lot after my first roast. The first one I took out way too early, first crack happened after about 3:08, I took it out not long after thinking it was the second crack but it was probably the last of the first crack as when I tasted the brew it was sour.
I had another go after reading some more on here and discovered that second crack sounds more like cellophane crinkling. This was much better with first crack at 3:22, waited till second crack which still happends only a minute later. It's a fast machine. I rried to slow it down with my wifes hair dryer on cool while they are roasting and a fan blowing on the machine as well. I ground up this batch and it smelt amazing. When I put it in my machine it came out like nothing I had seen before, very good colour, like dripping honey. I can't wait to try these again in a few days. I did two more batches after that.
I also made a chimney out of a tin can and drilled some breathing holes in it.
I have a lot to learn but I have thoroughly enjoyed roasting today.
I used 80grams of coffee in each batch, seemed to be a good amount for the machine.
That's why I believe the Target 800w machine is favoured more. Abit less power to try to drag it out abit longer. and its super cheap.

What was in your starter pack? I had Peru, Columbian and Ethiopian Ghimbi. Don't be affraid to try a blend, I took the KJM blend dropped the zero off the quantities and doubled it and that gave me a good quantity for around an 80g batch to roast and try. Which worked quit well so I did a full batch a couple days later.
I did a roast outdoors this morning before the heat of the day. I was able to extend the roast time way out. This time the very first crack of first crack occurred at 4:52 and was an extended first crack that went on for a while before it stopped. I let it run after that and as it began approaching 13 minutes I thought I would try and help it get to second crack so I put my tin chimney on and the plastic cover and covered the hole with something to bring up the heat. I got to second crack not long after and stopped the roast at about 15 minutes. I think it might be a nice well developed roast.
Where do you live?
most of my roasts gave been around 17deg ambient give or take 2deg and about 5:30-7min.
The hard part is stopping. The urge to want to do batches of all 4 and taste then is hard to resist.
I hear what your saying about wanting to roast the lot, my wifes thinks I'm now drinking too much coffee.
Wow that sounds like a long time for a popper. Like double time. How dark are the roasts?
I would say it looks about a CS8 or CS9.

IMG_1596.jpgIMG_1595.jpg Okay, this is a mixuture of 3 different batches of this morning Columbian roast, 80grams in popper each time. It's the same beans taken in 2 different lighting conditions. Tasted nice today. Can't wait to try tomorrow and the next day.
Thanks Javaphile, it worked today. I tried for hours yesterday to upload images, everytime I hit the 'Insert Image' icon I didn't get the option to choose a file from my computer, only the URL option. Now I have the computer option for some reason
