    Behmor 1600 1/2 or 1lb best?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Does anyone feel best results are obtained by roasting only 1/2 lb rather than 1lb?
In other words, is it better to roast 2 1/2lb loads rather than doing 1lb?
My feeling is that the 1/2lb results are better, but I may be mistaken as there are so many variables.
    Cheers
    Andrew

It probably comes down to what you prefer at the end of the day. As you say there are so many variables that come into play which can affect the final result - Voltage at powerpoint, Behmor set-up voltage (220,230,240V), Behmor internal cleaning (sensors), type of bean, age of bean, how beans are stored, ambient temperature/humidity, etc, etc. What one person says works for them, another will say doesn't for them. The only way you'll get a definitive answer will be in your own cup.

Behmor use the "Rosetta stone guide" for the time between first snap of first crack to start of second crack of 2:10min for 1/2lb and 3:10min for 1lb. I'd guess that extra 1 min would show up in the development of flavors of each roast. Personally, I settled on doing 1lb lots to avoid having to roast so often. For me, I've never had an issue with reaching second crack before the roast cycle runs through. Others say they do. I use a true 1lb on digital scales set to imperial which is 454gms. I normally use the "B" time setting and hit COOL when I'm happy with the depth of color. The only time I use 1/2lb now is when I'm trying a new bean for the first time.

Yes I generally use 1lb-P2-B for a true 1lb. Even though I do regular cleaning as recommended by Behmor I have noticed recently roast times have extended. This may be due to the cooler weather but seems to have been a progressive increase over the last 2-3 months though. I've never smoked out the roaster. May be residue building up somewhere out of sight?

The last couple of roasts of Colombian Volcan Galeras Supremo on this setting haven't been great (look a little scorched) so I'll be experimenting with this bean. Most of the others we use seem to come up OK especially some recent roasts of the India Mullayanagiri Geisha. I usually have to hit cool especially when using the "C" time duration with P2.

    I just tried 454gm of India Elephant Hills with P2 - B - 1 pound

I ended up having to add about 2.30 to get to start of second crack, but the ambient temperature is down a bit today.

Thanks CafeLotta, they turned out nicely, i don't have a CS card so unsure of roast depth but id guess somewhere around CS8-9 - Happy days

Hi Lukemc. I just posted in the main Behmor thread that I am now struggling to roast 1lb even on 1lb-p2-C + 1 min. My Behmor has been maintained as per manufacturers instructions and is about 50 roasts old. Roaster was purchased in September last year so back then the lower ambient temps were similar to now. Will be contacting Behmor soon for advice as even after opening up and cleaning dust off fans etc. the extended roast times continue. I was really happy with the 1lb roasts previously but now can't achieve a similar result. Not really interested in doing mini batches on a 1lb roaster.
