    How do you roast decaf?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Just as the subject reads, Id like some tips on how to roast decaf green beans.

I tried roasting today, i could hardly hear the first crack, and at 9mins on my popper, i stopped. Resulting beans was on the dark side. Tastewise wasnt too bad, but Id like to simply compare what I am doing to what others are doing.

I have an Imex as well, but prefer to roast using the popper due to the small batches. Once I get the roasting times figured out, Ill start using the Imex.

    cheers.

Ive only done a couple of roasts of decaf so far.
One in BBQ raoster and one in Imex.
    Mixed results.
BBQ roast was too long - I think I burnt them.
Imex was better but still not real good.
I think they are a much faster roast than other beans and it is very hard to go by normal rules.
FC said in a previous thread that 2nd crack is too far with these beans, so I would suggest doing 2 or 3 batches in the popper ranging between 4 and 8 minutes and see what you get.
I will probably try the same thing soon.

Re: How do you roast decaf?

Im a little surprised by these "issues" roasting the Decaf.

Ive roasted about 2kg all up, over 4 roasts. the first 3 were 400gms and the last was about double that.

Im roasting with a heat gun and a saucepan now (the colander is only for cooling now.... thanks for the tip Rich and Rae). My first crack is coming around 10 - 12 mins and I get a hint of second crack at about 15 minutes.

Im roasting on both sounds and colour and havent had it go bad yet. Im getting great flavour, and the aroma on day 2 is great.

I would say the end colour is a little darker than I go for with some of the other beans like Kenya AA or the Monsoon Malabar, but its only marginal.

Ive also been pretty impressed with the quality of the beans, as I havent yet found any crap in there.

Is my positive experience shared with anyone? because so far all the comments I have been reading have been negative.

I have found that I like the WP decaf beans (not the Swiss Water Process, but "Water Process"). Im in the States, so you probably dont have access to my supplier.

I take all my decafs about 20-30 seconds into second crack. Unlike a regular coffee, which at that point is good for espresso but not often my favorite for drip or vac pot, this is my preferred roast level for decaf regardless of the brewing method. The WP decaf still has a lot of origin flavor at this point.

Last Sunday, I roasted some Columbia Medellin 2004 WP Decaf about 20 seconds into second crack, using my BBQ gas grill / RK Drum setup.

I had found another homeroaster in Baton Rouge via the CoffeeGeek site, and he came over. We roasted some PNG Kibagah that he brought and the Columbian Medellin decaf.

WOW! The Columbian was wonderful and flavorful. He sent me an email praising it both in a single-origin espresso and in an Americano. I havent tried those, but brewed it in a vacuum pot last night and was amazed.

Yet another decaf that my mother-in-law will never see ;D.
