    Any CS Roasters have experience with roasting liberica?

    Hello all; any CS Roasters have experience with roasting liberica.
    Just had a kilo of liberica delivered from Borneo [my son is climbing there and had a friend drop off a kilo] and would like to do them justice in my Behmor.
    Would appreciate suggestions on a roast profile and or blend.
    I have roasted robusta previously and used it to blend up to 20'/. Go about it the same way as robusta ?

    I hope you had an import permit for that, and it was declared and inspected by DAFF. Landing beans direct (sneaky) is no joke, could destroy the whole industry here with a pair of bugs on board. Mr Austin couldn't see a problem with letting a few rabbits out either. -- rant finished --

    I've only played with Liberica once, a few years ago.
    Landed 5kg from the Philippines (with permit, declaration and inspection) and yes, it roasts very much like a robusta but seemed tough getting anything nice from it regardless of the roast depth. Good looking beans, they roast well but taste nasty.

    Do a full size batch of 400-500g in the Behmor. Go easy on them - P1 auto is too much heat so use P2 or 3. Be careful they donít get away from you after first crack, donít go to second crack as they taste bad enough as they are without adding more bitterness. Use them to add punch to an espresso blend for milk coffees. Personally Iíd only make them about 25% of a blend, but you may be able to go up to 50% if youíre feeling adventurous. Finally - be prepared for the odd sensation of a cheesy aftertaste! Thatís right - cheese. Good luck.

    Andy, hope you might have mor eknowledge on this than me (which I am sure is 100% likely). Travelling to Brazil later this year and wouldn't mind bringing back some greens as we plan on visiting a coffee plantation or two. Fromt he DAWR website:

    Not digested through an animal ó Green coffee beans ó Trade sample or personal consignment, weighing 5 kg or less

    Import Conditions

    Import conditions define the biosecurity requirements which must be met for your import. Where import conditions have been developed, they will be listed below.


    1. A Department of Agriculture and Water Resources import permit is not required, providing that the following conditions are met.
    2. Each consignment must be packed in clean and new packaging.
    3. All consignments must be inspected upon arrival to ensure that they are free of contamination and/or infestation by extraneous materials.
    4. Under the Biosecurity Charges Imposition (General) Regulation 2016 and Chapter 9, Part 2 of the Biosecurity Regulation 2016, fees are payable to the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources for all services. Detail on how the department applies fees and levies may be found in the charging guidelines.
    5. In addition to the conditions for the goods being imported, non-commodity concerns must be assessed including container cleanliness, packaging and destination concerns, and may be subject to inspection and treatment on arrival. Please refer to the BICON Non-Commodity Cargo Clearance case for further information.


    So as long as I am using them for personal use, under 5kg and they are free of contaminents/presented to customs/border security and deemed free of pests it seems okay?
    Similar to the OP above if its for personal use might be lucky?

    Correct, but you still have to purchase the annual permit (have a copy with you too) so the 5kg you bring in will cost at least $25/kg more than you paid in Brazil.
    ...and there is no guarantee that the customs agent will let them in, they will inspect and decide on arrival.

    If you roast them over there and bring them in brown you won't have to get a permit.

    Either way, make sure you declare them on the re-entry card and go in the "have something to declare" line.

    I nearly always come back with 5kg of beans, the amount of grief at the border is random. Some customs agents have never heard of the import permit so you might have to bounce it up the ranks until you hit someone who knows the hoops and make sure that it is only 5kg, I came back once with 5.1kg from Thailand (weighed in the jungle by hand) and they were going to confiscate the whole lot even with a permit!

    Thank you for the roast info LeroyC and Andy. RE: the liberica he did declare it through customs upon re entry.Fully appreciate concerns bringing green coffee into Australia .
    Just to clarify; It was only ONE vacuum packed 1 kg Sarawak Gourmet Coffee from: Black Bean Coffee, Kuching, Borneo. Quite an interesting cafe if anyone would like to google it and look at the pictures. I was told they had a variety of arabica, but was interested to try the liberica. So thankyou for the suggestions, i will let you all know how it goes once i try it; by the sounds of it i'll be trying to make it usable.

    Im new to Liberica, bought some in Indonesia alraedy raosted medium...I just wanna ask how did it go about your liberica roasting? Did you approach the 2nd crack? How did you brew it and did you blend it with other cultivar? Taste ptofile? Your response is highly aporeciated.
