First Roast in a Mixing Bowl

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Well seems how my last topic here was snipped (to a more appropriate place ;) ) thought I would post a couple of pics from my first roast for posterity and any comments.

I have been looking around for a cheapy Breadmaker but they all tend to be in Melbourne and pickup only on that fleabay place so I thought I would start off with a rubber bottomed Stainless bowl from Safeway. The rest of the gear is stuff I had laying around the house including the Bean Cooler :)

Indian Tiger Mountain from the current Bean Bay 15 degrees ambient. 300g Green weight.

I didnt have to much of a problem with the bowl moving around this left both hands free for mixing and holding the gun. Apart from a small issue with the plastic part of the thermocouple getting a little close to the hot air ::) All went fairly well about 9.30 to first crack and second crack kicking off at just on 14 minutes 242 degrees indicated on the meter.

I was a little surprised by the amount of chaff coming off so I can see why fans are used now. Off to the Good Guys I think.

Cooling time using some downwash off the chopper (yes I did use it ;D) and a little stiring with the spoon was 4 or 5 minutes to 60 degrees

Final weight allowing for a few lost ones in stiring and cooling just on 250g. Finished up at around CS 8.5 I think all the beans looked nice and uniform. Tasty too *:)

My only thoughts are that it will be hard to get repeatable results using this sort of method. Any thoughts on how to improve repeatability welcome?

Satisfaction level high at least until the tasting in about a week *8-)

    Mmmmmm Yummmmmy ;D

It was worth the 7 day wait. I broke the seal on the bag today and had a test of the beans. Just a slight hint of oil on the surface and a great aroma. Sliced a few with a knife to have a look across the bean and the colour was fairly uniform. Put some in the grinder and has an excellent cup, plenty of crema and a nice lingering aftertaste. Off out to play PNG Wahgi for plungers this afternoon :) .

I think I could get to like roasting these little suckers 8-)
