    Yummy Yemen

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Gday roasters,

I roasted up my second batch of the Yemen Bani Ismail a couple of days ago. I put together two bits of info--Sweet Marias said the Yemeni beans go quickly from 1st to 2nd crack and the notes on my last roast said "too dark, too fast".

So this time I set the Gene Cafe on 230° and when 1st crack arrived I turned it down to 220°. After another minute or so I thought this was still going too fast and slowed it again to 215°. Four minutes later it seemed to have slowed just short of 2nd crack so I put it back up to 220° and the crackling started about 30 seconds later. 15 seconds in and I pushed the cool button.

The beans came up very nice smelling, at a mix of CS 10 and 11.

I couldnt resist a taste last night, so I made myself a nice short ristretto!

    OH YUM!!

It started with a real burst of dark sweet fruit (dried cherries?) and finished with Lindt dark chocolate. I think Im in love.

Ive just roasted my first batch of Yemen, CS 10. Ill wait 6-7 days before tasting this (stored at a constant 19[ch730]C), give the volatiles time to stabilise before the affair begins :) I found both 1st and 2nd crack to be very hard to hear so I roasted to colour, 18.30 min roast @ 212[ch730]C.

    Hi Simon,

if you decide you dont like it I know a place in Port Fairy that will happily take it off your hands ;) Sounds like I will have to try and grab some of these next time around.

    What are you roasting with?

I have consumed about half a kilogram of this coffee in the past (roasted by Richard @ The Bean Barn, Ballarat) and consider this to be Grange quality material. I appreciate the info re Port Fairy (Is this in reference to Tutto Caffe?), but in no way, shape or form can I foresee a rift in the Ismaili affair opening up :) I purchased 5kg of Ismaili, outside of Coffeesnobs, as it has proven a little hard to track down this season and this should see me through 12months of drinking.

Im currently roasting with a Hottop B, in my opinion, a great bit of introductory equipment for the roasting novice.

    Hi Simon,

no it was in reference to me and my place ;) I have only just got my hottop D and am looking at giving it a brain transplant over the next few months for Laptop Control.

Tried a couple of Tutto Caffes blends but I like Andys better and a few of my bowl roasts have been fairly good too.

cheers, of back to work :-( should be fishing today instead.

    Behmor Coffee Roaster
I just made a doppio ristretto picolo latte with the Yemen (now a week old)--and Im going right back for another!
The dark cherry flavour has now a tinge of orange in the milk and the chocolate still comes through at the end.
I hope there will be enough left to taste how it fares at a fortnight post roast.
