Want to start home roasting: equipment advice

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi, guys!

I will be moving into a bigger place with bigger kitchen soon. I decided that since I will have some space on the bench, I will start roasting at home. I am very excited about it. However, I dont know where to start. What do you recommend. I wouldnt want to splash big bucks on the roaster, unless I absolutely have to. However, when I start, I would want to focus more on the roasting and beans than on messing with equipment. Also I wouldnt want a temp solution which I will have to change in a year or so.
What options (in terms of equipment) do we have, what would you recommend?

Also, I have very little knowledge of the roasting process. Any links, reading how-tos that you can recommend for the beginner? I have been to home-barista.com and some other sites. I couldnt find one simple and comprehensive guide for a dummy.

    Cheers
    Ed

    Welcome Ed!

All depends on your budget. Alot here started off with a popcorn popper and advanced to more serious roasting equipment.

There are lots of options [homespun and retail] available, many are not suited to indoor roasting due to the chaff created by the beans.

Can you confirm you intend to roast indoors [it will narrow down the field of available options]?

I would prefer to roast indoors and thats what I was planning on doing. However, if I must roast outdoors, I probably would be able to do this too.
However, I would love to roast indoors regularly. I would also want to avoid messing with hardware myself if thats possible ;-)

In that case you are probably going to have to look over on the left

to some site sponsors who sell the non DIY roasting stuff (iroast, gene etc)

Good luck with it - I am going to be trying the roasting thing too over the chrissy break.

I roast indoors with a Gene Cafe and am pleased with the results. It does need to sit under a working extractor fan or it sets off the smoke alarms.
I can set up, roast, and tidy away in half an hour.
