Chinese Gunpowder Green Temple Heaven Tea $26/kg*

Ok so the nagging worked. We are going to have another crack at one of the worlds best teas in our second attempt at becoming TeaSnobs too ;)

This time it is the "Zucha" or pearl tea from China that is hand picked from the plants and then each leaf is hand rolled into a little "gun powder" sized pellets. Sounds like a lot of labour for a cup of tea but apparently this process helps keep in the aroma and fragrances of the tea leaves until you infuse them with hot water.

A couple of "gotchas" on this poll:

The first is that box of tea is 25kg and if we dont sell it all the poll will be canceled.

The other is that due to the volume of 1kg of tea we can only get 1kg into a postpak or 2kg into a fastway satchel so keep that in mind when working out your freight.

    [hr]
    * plus freight options
    • 3kg Express Postpack $9.50
    • 5kg Fastway Courier $8.80 (++ only to available areas)
    • For larger shipping amounts please contact us.

    [hr]
    The required "fine print" ;)

++ Check the Fastway locator for availability to your area. Select Geelong as the "local", put your postcode and 5kg as the weight. If you see the satchel option then you can use the Fastway courier service. You will need to supply a business hours address to ensure someone is there to accept the delivery.

Disclaimer: prospective purchasers of this or any other tea listed on CoffeeSnobs should understand that you are purchasing shares in bags of tea that may contain materials other than green tea. Those shares include everything in the bags and may include items you may prefer not to come in contact with your tea making equipment. It is a buyers responsibility to identify the material other than tea and to decide how it should be treated.

If this is your first CoffeeSnobs order (or your details have changed) please email the below information to: polls@CoffeeSnobs.com.au and then we will have the correct details for invoicing at the end of the poll period.

    CoffeeSnobs Name:
    Real Name:
    Preferred name on the receipt:
    Email address for invoice:
    Delivery Address:
    Phone (MB or BH):

Note: the postal address should be somewhere that is attended during the day to avoid the delivery getting "carded" and you having to pick it up at a local post office or depot. Work, pub, local milkbar, grandmas house all make sense.

Hmm ... finding cupping notes for tea certainly is wierd. Most of them seem to be from places trying to sell the tea, so take it with a grain of salt. The notes, that is, not the tea.

This Temple of Heaven is the highest grade Gunpowder available. Also called Pinhead Gunpowder for its small size pellets, it is made from smaller size leaves than our basic Gunpowder (No. 520). The cup color is slightly lighter and the infusion a bit more aromatic and complex with a flowery undertone. We recommend infusing this tea slightly longer to give the leaves time to unfurl. Try with a mint leaf as "tea a la menthe"."

"Gunpowder tea gets its name from the appearance of the leaves, which are rolled tightly into small, round pellets. The tight roll helps Gunpowder remain fresher longer than other teas. This example, "Temple of Heaven," has a sweet and slightly smokey character. Use spring water at a temperature well below boiling."
    http://www.holymtn.com/tea/greentea.htm

"Gunpowder tea is green tea, most of which comes from a city named Pingshui in the Eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang, south of the Yangtse River Delta, where it has been cultivated for centuries and is known as the "green pearl" of tea. Pingshui tea market records date as far back as the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 - 907). The areas gunpowder tea was an important tribute traditionally given to the Chinese emperors; and with the growing trade volume between China and the West it also acquired an increasing number of lovers in Europe. Particularly during the second half of the 19th century, when gunpowder tea export reached its peak, its price on the London market was second only to then-popular Wu Yi Oolong (also from China). Even today, Zhejiang Province still proudly calls itself "home of silk and tea" for its two primary natural products.

The name "gunpowder" derives from the teas elaborate method of processing, which traditionally lasts several hours and during which the tea leaves are withered, steamed or stir-fried and individually rolled into small pellets. Early foreign traders mistook these pellets for gunpowder or gunshot.

Gunpowder tea has a delicate aroma with a slightly smokey note. It should *always* be enjoyed without milk or cream. "

Any chance of offering this as a half kilo option along with a bean order? A kilogram is a lot of tea to drink while it is fresh.

    Cheers

My wife pays an outrageous amount for this tea(handrolled pearls of green tea and jasmine blossom) and would be very interested to know if this tea could also be offerred thru this group.

I do agree that a kilo is a LOT of tea... just like 5kg is a lot of coffee (well it was a lot of coffee before CoffeeSnobs!!! ) ;)

If we make the buy amounts too small we might not sell the whole 25kg and therefore not get any.

Your suggestion of a local divide for Christmas is a good one and thats where most of my 2kg will be heading. I only need 100gm myself to try it and the rest will be packaged up for the relos.

    What is outrageous? *;)

Maybe in the future we might look at it but I think we are CoffeeSnobs first and only occasionally delve into the TeaSnob arena for tinker.

I have jasmine growing at home and can throw a handful in with the tea if needed (will your wife roll her own?) *;D *;D *;D

    Luca and Andy
Thanks for your helpful and humerous replies.
Nothing humorous however about $24 per 50gm of Jasmine pearls, hence my desire to find a cheaper source.
    Cheers

Jasmine Pearls at $480/kg ? WOW it would want to be good.

Im not too sure we will be getting tea this time around. I dont have a real use for 10kg of the stuff so unless we get a few more buyers today then this one will be dropped.

--- cut and pasted to all the polls this month ---

The November polls were open from midnight Sat-Wednesday night when they closed.

The last of the invoices were emailed today (alphabetic send... 2muchcoffeeman is the always the first one and Yirg is the last :) )

The schedule (depending mostly on the coffee supplier)...

Everyone makes payment in the next day or so, we then order the beans, get them freighted here when ready, get em bagged and couriered out.

Our normal end to end takes 3 weeks from initial polls to the last CSer getting their beans.

If I had to guess I would say people should start to see beans at the end of next week and early the following week so we will be right on target. :o
