Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Starter pack recieved! Thankyou Andy.

Funny thing, the delivery guy actually reversed his car into my driveway and without getting out of the car put the bag in the letterbox (we have a big letterbox) out of the drivers window. I stood there and watched him. How lazy is that??? ;D ;D ;D

Mine arrived on Tuesday! Im so excited!

Lucinda our delivery guy stays in the van and beeps the horn until I come out and come to his car window! He knows Im home because the car is there. And he had to deliver a lot with my online purchasing over christmas - So he knows me.

Just between us... sometimes I pretend Im not here and aaaages later I hear him thump up the stairs and leave stuff on the top step!

Ahhh... the things that entertain those that stay at home with babies!

I have already roasted some PNG peaberry. Within an hour of getting the beans ;D

Just looking for a few profiles of the others so I have an idea of how they need to be roasted.

Im out to buy my popcorn machine tomorrow, and just ordered the roaster pack, my wife will be rather mad, but as said already, she likes the results of my brewing, so when home brewed, fresh, aromatic coffee is served up, that should......should.....smooth this crazy hobby out a little ;)

Oh gee, its now full steam ahead....received my starter pack I ordered from Coffee Snobs, cant wait to get into the blending with the differenet varieties.

Does anyone know of a good part on this site or another site where it lends a hand in knowledge on blending different varieties? I could fly blind, but anything read from others would also help.

Re: Starter Packs for newbie roasters.

    I think first up smoky,

The best idea is to just restrict yourself to Single Origins for a while until such time as you have a firm grasp of the processes involved for the various bean varieties you are going to roast. Once youre comfortable at this level, then you can give blending a try with some fairly simple 50/50 blends and then move on from there.

As has been mentioned many times throughout this forum, Sweet Marias is by far and away the best site for a newbie roaster to pick up some knowledge. A simple Google search brought it up as the second site listed so thats where I would recommend you head off to mate.

    All the best,
    Mal.

I am just now happy with learning about SOs and learning to describe flavours. I dont want to confuse myself with trying to blend just yet - exceptthe odds and sodds blend with those little bits of leftover beans.

Sometimes those odds and sods blends turn out to be very noice indeed..... Probably because of the high quality beans we get access to here at CS ;),

Yes, they are only one per member (be honest please!) due to the high cost and extra time involved in putting them together.

We will have some more starter pack for first time roasters in about 2 weeks from now.

    Hi all,

Im relatively new here, but like what Ive seen of the group so far. :)

I never even knew roasting your own coffee was possible two weeks ago, but received my starter pack today (thanks so much Alan, it looks awesome!) and roasted my first batch of Indian Tiger Mountain. I posted a pic of my results in the "Hi Im new here" thread if anyone is interested.

Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for making it so easy to get into this hobby (obsession?). I look forward to participating more as time goes on.

    Cheers,

Ive just ordered my starter pack after reading posts in beanbay. Cant wait to get the popper popping and grind my freshly roasted beans. Since checking out CS Ive improved my coffee skills, bought a grinder and my Venezia is turning out a decent brew until I purchase my Silvia in the next couple of months.

Sorry to hear about the postie blend shauno, we send a lot of starters around the country and only a couple each year arrive split (which is why we pack them in cotton). Im sure you will still get great results and will have fun doing it.

Yes itsme5k, we are all victims of great coffee now and I expect that your favourite cafe is now your previous favourite cafe!

What to do now you have nearly run out? Wait for the next green bean BeanBay and grab a bag of something to feed your roaster. We will email eveyone when the day of the next BeanBay is known... and you wont have to wait long.

    :)

Re: Starter Packs for newbie roasters.

I roasted 3 x 100g batches of Peruvian Segunda Broken Bag Blend on Thursday night. First crack was really obvious, but I couldnt detect 2nd crack on any of the batches.

Roasting times were 6.5 minutes, 7 minutes & 8 minutes, but the beans turned out the same colour in the end...

36 hours later, and the first batch is all gone - a few test shots, then two flat whites for breakfast & a small bag of plunger-ground for a mate. Tastes pretty good for a first attempt :)

Next roasting session will be tomorrow...

Ive just ordered my starter pack. I picked up a Crazy Popper on e(vil)Bay which should also arrive this week.

I read somewhere an article where this guy said roasting his own beans was a major turning point in his coffee enjoyment. I cant wait to see what the difference is.

Roasting your own is very very addictive ;D I too ordered my starter pack not so long ago, and as soon as it arrived (very promptly I might add) I was roasting within minutes.

Has anyone else ever roasted way more than they can drink? ;)

Thanks Andy for the prompt delivery. I had to exercise some restraint due to health issues so waited until today (the pack arrived yesterday) to do my first roasts. Did 2 lots of the Rwandan in a Crazy Popper - first crack heard OK. Not the second. Stopped the first at what looks about medium and let the second go longer. Now to see how they develop.

The waiting seems to be the hardest part.

Hmmm, I feel like Ive forgotten something though..... Ohhh yeah!!

Note to self: *buy popper first thing tomorrow!

Thanks Andy for the notification. I await with eager anticipation.
