    BeanBay - June

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    ;D

Currently it looks like mid this week is when the next BeanBay will appear.

No more details just yet (so save your fingers) but it will also be on new BeanBay software that is soooo close to being finished.

The moderators are having a try of the new software at the moment and we might try and run a "Psudo BeanBay" prior to the real one so everyone can try out the software without hammering your credit card.

Details will follow as they become clearer....

    :)

    That is good news!

Late orders for the coffee drive have had me dipping deeply into my home supplies so a bean bay will be welcome.

Checks bank balance and pile of bills on desk... May have to do a bit of a financial juggling act.

Hopes there is nothing I really want so I may be able to give it a miss this month...

Easy fixed... just dont visit on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday or read any email heads-up that I send
    ::)

    Midweek?
Yes, I expect to hear from the last of the brokers on Monday or Tuesday (at worst) so Wednesday is looking about right for the real BeanBay. *

We will try and get the Psudo BeanBay running for testing before then.

Wednesday is looking tight... Thursday is more likely.

(which is why I try not to "spill the beans" early on beanbays)

=== a copy of the email for those that have nasty spam filters===

    Heads-up!

As mentioned in the forums the June BeanBay will kick-off Thursday 24th May at midday east coast time.

The BeanBay software has been completely rewritten by our resident code guru Matt (geekrocket) and contains many new features, bells and whistles including the ability to track the FairCrack donations. The software has been tested by the moderators and apart from a handful of typos (all mine) the new BeanBay works like a charm.

    Woo Hoo
Another first for BeanBay this month is the availability of CoffeeSnobs Brown! So if you are struggling with the volume of roasting beans for friends, family and colleagues you can now point them at the brown bean section of BeanBay where they can select “roast to order” beans in different sized packages. As true CoffeeSnobs we would always recommend that you purchase whole beans and grind yourself but we can also grind to order if required.

If you are placing an order this month please don’t forget to add a CoffeeSnob member card to your basket. You will find the card in the category called “Other Stuff”. The membership card is free but replacement cards will incur a $5 reprinting fee.

Some of the green beans on offer this month include:
Guatemalan Huehhuetenago (new crop, grade 1)
Peru Segunda Naturals (some of the ugliest beans on the planet but they cup well)
Ethiopian Sidamo Gr 1 (rare find, high grade washed and sorted Ethiopians)
Indian Monsoon Malabar AA (AQIS cleared the container on Monday, Thursday CS has beans!)
Sulawesi Torajah Kalosi (Grade 1 and far better processing than the Mandheling)
As well as a stocktake of some previous BeanBay beans in very small quantities.

Any updates or changes will be posted in the “BeanBay Banter” section of the forum:
    http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?board=NewPolls

    Enjoy your coffee!

    Andy.

    Hi all

Ill like a little advice on what beans are a good start for someone new to roasting with a GeneCafe. I did a search on this site for these beans ...

    Guatemalan Huehhuetenago - nothing.
Peru Segunda Naturals - quite a few posts using a popper.
Ethiopian Sidamo - nothing on roast details.
Indian Monsoon Malabar (quite a bit of info on this one e.g. 18min 250c, 20s into 2nd crack for GeneCafe.)
    Sulawesi Torajah Kalosi - zilch.

I know I like Monsooned Malabar and Sidam is lovely as pre roasted beans from a good roaster. But as Im still playing with my Gene something that is good as a single origin is needed as I dont yet want to do any blends and a bean that is forgiving to a beginner. I have a short black and my wife adds a bit of milk.
Naturally all advice is taken knowing that this is not a science :-)

Also if these packs are around 2.5 kg whats the price roughly per kg for these beans. That will decide if I get one bag or two of two different beans to play with.

normally expect to pay about $10 per kg.
Seriously though Andy only makes available top quality beans so having tried only the peru segunda out of those my guess would be that all are top class. given that beanbay only comes once a month why not get a bag of each. :)

Something in the range of 1kg of each would be nice, unless someone wants to go halvies?

Hmmm! I wasnt going to participate this bean bay, but I love the sound of those weird and wonderful names - its enticing enough to make me reconsider.

I used to research the beans a bit and make a so-called educated decision as to what I would try :P but lately I have found it more fun to randomly pick one or two types and be surprised. I have not been disappointed with my selections yet.

So no doubt there I will be again! :D :D

Are we able to buy these in smaller amounts Andy? The 2.5kg bag is a little too much for me.
I hear you (and others) but the whole concept of CoffeeSnobs is based around 2.5kg lots. Its the size that works best for freight, packing and packaging. In the early days we tried 1,2,3,5kg packages and nothing worked as well as the 2.5kg.

Something in the range of 1kg of each would be nice, unless someone wants to go halvies?
That is what we recommend. Find a local CoffeeSnob and go "halvies" in a couple of varieties that way you save on freight and volume.

The other choice is one of our fine sponsors (The Coffee Barun, Pioneer, CoffeeHit and Venziano) sell green beans by the kilo but expect the price to be a little higher as packing into 1kg lots is expensive.

The other thing to remember is that 2.5kg of CoffeeSnob green beans costs about the same as 1kg of supermarket roasted coffee.... and you know the quality and taste difference!

    Re: BeanBay - June

    Ha, correcting my earlier post.

Earlier I didnt find anything here on "Guatemalan Huehhuetenago" but Google corrected the spelling for me to "Guatemalan Huehuetenango" and there are a few posts about this in the cupping room. Poppers and apparently quite a bit of bean variability for that persons batch of beans.
Also Sulawesi Toraja Kalossi has two s. This time yes a few posts on roasting this.

I just gotta work out what to get. Ill try for two bags (if there around $10/kg is fine) so I want to get two very different beans which are good as SO. But for me with no experience deciding what to get is just like pin the tail on the donkey.

Dont forget that greens last quite well and sit happily in the cupboard waiting for your gene to do its thing *8-)

The worst part is when youve developed a taste for a bean and then run out *:( gotta get me some more PNG Peaberry *:P

    Very true MJ.

At some point we all thought 2.5kg was a lot of beans... CS changes all that!

Also Sulawesi Toraja Kalossi has two s.
    Well sometimes it does!
Every broker in Australia brings in bags with different spelling. Toraja / Torajah and Kalosi / Kalossi and a mixture of both.

Mandheling is the same and most of the African countries have a "pool" of letters that might describe their town/port/region.

You have to remember that often English is little more than strange hieroglyphics to the bloke that sets the bag stencil and google is long way from his priority list.

Andy, thats ok. I understand the reasoning behind the 2.5kg bags. :)

Any of the "Melbourne" CSs going to beanbay pickup either want to buy a 2.5 kg bag of the Toraja and go halves? and I will buy the Malabar, and split that one?

1 hour 38mins to go. I have to go and take the little Padwan to Child Care now so that should take up some time, then back just in time to give the keyboard, mouse and bank balance a hammering.

Yippee and new beanbay with new software. itchy fingers, bring it on.
