Wow that was a suprise, I wasnt expecting a Beanbay until Feb, nice job on keeping that one quiet :-X
I am excited! :)
(this email that was just sent to all CS’rs is below. If you didn’t get it please check your spam filter and/or the email address that you have used in the forum.)
I hope the New Year sees you fit, happy healthy and ready for another 12 months as a CoffeeSnob. I’m excited about the direction that CoffeeSnobs is heading and look forward to building on the successes and positives that we experienced in 2007 to reach an even higher peak in 2008.
To kick off the New Year we ran a “Design the CoffeeSnobs Van” competition and all the member submissions were amazing, we always knew our coffee comrades were a clever bunch and this proves that CoffeeSnobs can do anything and everything. The joint (very deserving) members Sparro and “The Goodies” each pickup a show bag for their efforts and I look forward to getting a tweaked design on the van in the near future.
The first of the GREEN BeanBay sales will start at Wednesday 16th January.
WA – 7:00pm
NT – 7:30pm
QLD – 8:00pm
SA – 8:30pm
NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS – 9:00pm
Brazil Sweet Naturals (dried on the tree) $8/kg*
Colombia Volcan Galeras Bold $9/kg*
Peru Grace Villa Estate $9/kg*
Malawi AA Plus Pamwamba $10/kg*
(* including $0.50 FairCrack donation)
Additional to the above will be some decaf and a couple of other beans in small volumes.
The beans should have been here last week but due to “post Christmas lag” from one of the brokers we are running a little later than expected. Lucky we have a van now and it picked its first BIG pile of beans saving additional delivery waiting time. We still have to pack them so delivery this month might be a couple of days later than usual.
We are just about to hit the 4000 member mark which has to make us the busiest cafe in the country albeit an electronic one!
Have a great 2008 CSrs.
Wow that was a suprise, I wasnt expecting a Beanbay until Feb, nice job on keeping that one quiet :-X
I am excited! :)
Research reseach research. I think I want them all.
Oh wait I can. Yippee.
Looking forward to this one. I reckon the beans will go faster than ever on this one. A couple of months without the hype of Bean Bay will send CSs into a buying frenzy.
Almost like advertising that the shops are closed for one day and everyone rushes in to stock up the cupboards with a years supply of baked beans. (I our case, coffee beans)
Hi there, can you please explain to me how Beanbay works? Thanks
Firstly if you have a look in the top left corner of your screen you will see a box saying "buy green" if you click on that go into the green bean section.
if you have a look there now you will see beans from the last bean bay, all sold out now but good to hone your skills on *;), and if you click on one it will give you Andys cupping notes and at the bottom you can select the quantity you want and add it to your cart.
Once you have what you want you can go to the check out and pay for your beans. There will be 2 methods for shipping one is direct frieght to your house or depending on what city your in the will usually be a coffee snobs gathering and you can get your beans sent there, which will be cheaper frieght and you get the bonus of meeting a few fellow snobs.
Good luck and im sure someone will fill in what ive forgotten.
try this too.
Or..... You could just read this sticky post at the top of this BeanBay page :) ::)
Hi Andy - thanks for saving us. Is the "Peru Grace Villa Estate" one, one and the same type of bean as the "Peru Villa Rica Grace Estate"?
okay - I know you are all experts here and this is going to seem like a really silly question but do you have to have a special roaster to roast the beans or can they be roasted in the oven???
No, you dont need a special roaster. The most common methods used are a popcorn popper, bread maker & heat gun. Have a read through the roaster section of the forum for more detailed info. An oven isnt very ideal as it doesnt roast evenly and youll get an oven full of "chaff" which could be quite messy.Originally Posted by VIX link=1200321436/0#8 date=1200386830
Bill - if you have a popcorn maker have a crack at that, but the better option in the long run is a bread maker and heatgun - breadmaker stirs and heatgun mounted so that it faces into the bowl heats. For now you could use a big stainless bowl and a heatgun and stir, but that gets tedious.
Have a search because there is heaps of info on home roasting here and you will learn a lot reading.
Looking forward to my first bean bay and then my first roasting
It feels great to be part of this group, sort of like more confidnece to have a go at it
Will be there at the start, Hope I dont miss out.
Thanks Andy for organising it.
And thanks to all who contribute your experiences: it is very encouraging. :)
Great news Andy,
A welcome new years surprise Bean Bay. (I thought someone suggested the first one this year would be in Feb? - definitely not complaining!)
It will probably be more frantic than ever. After a burst of Christmas roasting, a lot of roasters are probably running low on stock (like me ::) ). I had to top up last weekend from a coffee retailer/wholesaler who sold me a couple of kilos of green. His range of beans - very familiar (and the fact that they are good quality and roast very well!) makes me suspect that he may even buy from you :-?. (Of course his price included a considerable mark-up - oh well, I was desperate. Shouldve held off a day or 2 but.)
Havent tried the Brazil Sweet Naturals before - interesting. Good to see the Peru GVE again - a great roasting bean and love that caramel smell/taste. And another African AA - great.
No doubt there will also be a few additional surprises - cant wait.
Well, this sort of is the Feb BeanBay as delivery will be in the first couple of day of Feb.
Yes, same bean, same estate same shotgun first crack... a great bean for new roasters. *The problem is that the name moves around on the brokers offer sheet, I just cut n paste em!Is the "Peru Grace Villa Estate" one, one and the same type of bean as the "Peru Villa Rica Grace Estate"?
Cun n paste em?
Careful there Andy!
;D ;D ;D
Ta Greg, I have fixed it.
No bonus points for finding a typo by "Andy" though... they are far too common for that.
Ozscott, it wasnt me asking about roasting, it was VIX that was asking.Originally Posted by ozscott link=1200321436/0#10 date=1200388165
Sorry Bill - I read your answer and then stuck your name in by mistake...Vix it was meant for.
My personal method is a wok - outside on the BBQs wok burner. *This is good for the small quantities I roast and keeps the smoke (I like a dark roast) outside.Originally Posted by VIX link=1200321436/0#8 date=1200386830
Like polenta, it requires regular stirring to get beans evenly roasted. *And one must *blow away the chaff.
Have a read here http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1174699442 and you should be on your way.Originally Posted by VIX link=1200321436/0#8 date=1200386830
I see a lot of new member names already online. up to 65 members ready for action. not long to go now.
...and I just made it with a few minutes to spare after lots of CS Brown roasting. In fact, just dropped the last 10kg in the cooling tray.
Just love watching 10kg of WOW going around in circles, its a pretty thing.
So Im watching the BeanBay from the Snobbery tonight to make sure it runs smooooooth....
done and done.
Phew - that was quick, wasnt in time to get some PNG peaberry, but have stocked up on yirgy which is what I was after this month.
Andy- another brilliant month.
Great selection, super fast server...
Already paid for beans- thanks again
And smooth it was Andy - lots of members and lots of coffee! Thanks! :) The usual type bag will be fine ;)
Some Peru and Malawi for me!
Something a little different...looking forward to the Peru and that caramel flavour I have read about... Mmmmmm *drools*
Thanks Andy again, and see you in 2 weeks!

Java "Not clicking" phile
....arrhh Peru Villa Rica....paid up matey. Thanks again.
Malawi. Ordered. Paid. DONE. :D
CS and BeanBay just gets better and better...
Phew... another grab and run !!!
Bagged a few so Im a happy camper... learning to sit poised over a keyboard and focused for the pounce hehehe. Mind you... the PNG was well and truly gone before I even noticed it was there :o :o :o
Great selection, Andy.
Couldve bought the "whole shop".
Malawi, Brazil Naturals and Peru will go down real well.
Thanks again mate.
Maybe we could put BeanBay in the olympics!!!!
Nothing like competition to improve the reflexes.
Great selection Andy............... nice to get some Yirg!!
Many Thanks Andy
My first Bean Bay was lots of fun. Some things sure move fast heh?
AnyHow: * *Lots of Beans+New Roaster = Happy Camper :D
Lots of fun and learning over the next few months. Will be listening to roasting tips for each variety.
I nearly bought the shop. With my winnings from the CS Van comp I bought up this month.
Thanks Andy for the great selection and for the loads of free beans.
The Goodies is Happy :) :)
And All ordered and paid for...
Andy I put in an order for DMM as well as beans... went through separately but will collect both from Dennis
Its always nice to see it run smoothly... the nightmares and bugs are all just a (bad) memory now
Really? How did you know it was going to appear? I snuck that one in. I thought it was only Nunu and The Goodies that could read my mind.Originally Posted by lucinda link=1200321436/15#24 date=1200477868
Both great beans, very "pretty" off the roaster and great in the cup. Im sure you will enjoy them.Originally Posted by Maccas_chicka link=1200321436/15#27 date=1200478275
Some of the beans were only a few kilos which is why I didnt say they existed in the email. We need to keep a few of everything off BeanBay to cover unforseen problems, those appear in the following BeanBay if we didnt need to use them.PNG was well and truly gone before I even noticed it was there
The first of the orders, in fact most of the orders should ship Monday morning.
Guess what we are doing till then?
Got my coffee for the month.
Made 2 orders by accident. Its the nerves you see, all this bean bay action makes me a bit twitchy. But i got 10k of Malawi and a wee bit of yirg and some sulawesi. When I get my heat gun its all systems go. My rotiroaster died and its a bit hot here in Alice for my Twin Popper Setup.
I had a wee feeling all day that it would be there. Was crying to Hazbean that I only had a little bit left a couple of weeks ago. :D This will add to the supplies.Originally Posted by Andy Freeman link=1200321436/30#37 date=1200479189
Got some Malawi as heard great things last time, mmm chocolate.
Cant go past more Yirg. Only noticed the Tanzanian a bit too late.
My first bean bay, and I am happy!
Good info provided to help the choice, and a very clear and quick ordering process. With so many snobs wanting to order at once I would have forgiven some slowness, but no - order completed in no time, with no problem! Thanks Andy. If only all online ordering worked as well.
Cant wait to collect the beans and member card at Epic. Did I mention Im a happy camper?

Been like it all my life, used to drive my family nuts because they could never keep any secrets from me. ;D
I got Ethiopian Yirgacheffe
Colombian Volcan Galeras Supremo Bold
Indian Chikmagalur A
Brazil Sweet Naturals
The choices were based on what might be interesting to try by itself and as a blend. Ill have to match this with what I have already. I also got some Decaf Mocha Java for use by itself.
Working out what to blend and with what ratios is a bit like that midday TV show "Ready Steady Cook" where they have a bag of shopping goodies and have to work out what to make with it :-)
Damn and blast cause i screwed up and missed out :-(
Was logged in really early and watching TV on the PC while waiting which crashed it and annoyed my and then i completely forgot to turn it back on and order!
Someone will be happy though cause i ordered 3.5kg or Brown instead.
Really wanted some of that Malawi so hope theres a small lot next time,
and ill try to pay more attention.
Doh! Missed out as well. I was looking for the Brazilian, but I forgot to tell the missus to get some for me. Too busy thinking of work. Maybe next time.
Damn! Missed out as well. Was desiring some Malawi but had a meeting and 1hour 45mins after the start of bean bay is just too late with only the Columbian bean left. So walking away empty-handed.
Thought you would have remembered Nunu as stated below, Andy seems to think that you and I are the only ones that can read his mind.
;DI thought it was only Nunu and The Goodies that could read my mind.
WOW... It pays not to forget about Beanbay. Doesnt matter so much as I have enough and still managed to get some of the Colombian Volcan Galeras Supremo Bold.
Also snavelled the last data logger...
Andy great work again. Thanks heaps.
