CoffeeSnobs News and GREEN BeanBay - 17th June

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Below is the monthly email for those with hungry spam filters!

    Andy.

    ===================================

This month we welcomed our 5000th CoffeeSnob member who promptly changed her name to "meginoz5000" at which point the competition closed. *After much debate and deliberation, *the moderator team compiled a winners list and the top were:

    1. NE14COFFEE - sign writing the side of a huge flexi-bus.
    2. Alskeiru - tattooing his house mate and getting her to wander Westfield.
    3. The Goodies - Stadium seating and LED signage to show the web address.

Thanks to all the entries and special thanks to the site sponsors who donated the great prize pool.

The other big news this month was when I managed to get my ugly-mug into The Age Epicure magazine. *It was a fun article and great to see CS in the press again and Im sure all the new members were welcomed warmly into our coffee community.
If you missed the article you can read it on the Age website still:

My computer froze at 8:56pm >:(
By the time I attempted to force quit and eventually rebooted it was 9:04.
Amount of Yirg available at 9:04...none.

Looking forward to seeing it in the bay in the near future.

Thanks, Andy. Managed to get all on my list, but like others, am amazed how quickly it all went. Looking forward to trying some new beans.

Was sorely tempted to get more MTE but worked out Ive probably got almost a years supply of coffee already, so hopefully youll be able to get more next season and Ill make do till then (and probably indulge in a few more purchases in the interim) :)

My first bean bay and boy was it quick! I clicked on the PNG picture when it got to the description none available. I am still very happy I got some beans (Tanzania) and some chocolate. Thanks Andy for all your hard work - being from country NSW I am looking forward to my journey of learning how to roast my own coffee beans. Meaghan

    Very interesting!

That was my first Bean Bay... almost missed everything though.

I only wanted a little Wahgi, but it sold out in (according to my computer clock) under 90 seconds.

So I consoled myself with some Monsoon Malabar and Cocoa and was about to declare my Bean Baying over (at 9:05!!) when my wife suggested hitting refresh! I did, and Andy magically supplied us with some secret Wahgi hed obviously hidden away somewhere... So I got my Wahgi after all.

    Onya Andy!

Mysteriously, the Wahgi has slowly been going UP in amount available. Any ideas why, anyone?

    Cheers
    Stuart.

Yes, the Wahgi coming back from the dead - I presume about 15 people changed their mind so the beans came back in circulation. Some Yirg did the same. I guess it shows you should keep refreshing the page before giving up. The system encourages people to grab a whole stash of beans in their basket where it is safe and then make a final decision about how much they really want to buy so discarding some before checkout.

I had my game plan worked out predicting the Yirg would go quickly so grabbed that first then over to the potent chocolate and finally a kg of tea. An interesting mixed bag.

Beans can go up in amount if someone reviews their basket & puts some beans back.

Scored some Malabar & some decaf. Gotta be quick all right.

Also my 1st bean bay. Thought I might just observe what everyone was doing by looking at how fast certain beans were being snaffled up.

Got caught up in the "feeding frenzy" and found I couldnt resist - next thing I know I have bought 15kg of various beans and 1kg of the chocolate.

    Dont even own a roaster yet - ;D :o :o ;D

Looks like I will be adding a few more pieces of hardware to my collection - and build myself a "Belinda Special" aka corretto.

Now to break it gently to my NON-coffee drinking wife who has been very patient and supportive :-[ in my coffee adventure so far ;)

Thanks Andy for an "interesting" experience.

My first Bean Bay in a couple of years. All I can say is...FAST.

I love my coffee, but love puerh and Darjeeling even more, which means I may go a whole week without a coffee. Weird, I know, for a CS.

Nonetheless, Im down to my last couple of bags of Mandheling, so Ill have to upskill on my Beanbaying. Wont forget to hit that refresh button, even when hope seems gone. I always say: A home without a bag of Mandheling is not a real home.

I bought the cocoa this time. It just so hard to get good cocoa powder. Woolies generic is about the best I can find easily: at least its dark, unscented and sweaty with reasonable bitterness. Most cocoa in Oz seems to be apologising for itself. *Anyway, fingers crossed that the African Red is the real deal. If it is, Ill be drinking it neat.

    Hi all!

glad it went well, I have just got home (I missed BeanBay!) but knew it would run smoothly without me (unlike the not so good ol days of server crashes and hair pulling).

The magical Yirg and Wahgi were added remotely, I had snaffled a bag of each for the Snobbery and when I spoke to my wife at 9:10 to hear that they had sold out in minutes I talked her through adding them into the pile which is great for the home roasters and not so great for the roasted bean customers (and myself!).

To those that missed out on what you wanted, sorry, thats the way it goes Im afraid. Some of these varieties we have the whole countries quota of, no more, zilch, zippo until the next container or shipment which could be months away.

We still have some of the best beans in the country available in BeanBay now so you shouldnt leave empty handed.

    Happy roasting CSrs,

    Andy.

Great beanbay this month Andy - thanks! If it wasnt for the fact I need $ to live on other things apart from coffee I would have bought a lot more Wahgi!

DickieKnee, welcome and what a start for you! Im in the same boat with my wife - she doesnt drink coffee but is very supportive of my hobby and love for coffee... which comes a very close second I had a laugh ;)....

It was my first beanbay but I managed to get everything I was after: decaf, some Malawi, this months tea and 500g of the drinking chocolate. If it wasnt for this darned habit I have of eating I would have started a much more substantial bean stock.

Yeah, that was pretty startling -- first-time beanbayer, login 9:15 -- almost nothing left! Whats with the frenzy guys? Thanks to Andys late additions I did actually get something on my poor little list! And the nice person who tossed some of the cocoa back :)

Except in the confusion Ive now got 2 orders side-by-side, both with postage -- is there a way to combine them?

No good being pissed off mate :-?...... There are only so many bags of beans to go round and as it was, Andy had to arrange for some of his BrownBay stock to be made available :o. There are still some excellent varietals available currently, namely the MTE and the Monsooned Robusta plus some outstanding Mocha Java Decaf.

You could always ask if any CS Member would be willing to split some of their acquisition with you too but being pissed off probably wont help you out in that department either.....

I had a years supply of greens in the cupboard and didnt need any just yet ... then I find out theres some Yirg on offer ... so Beanbay time finds me glued to the computer snapping up "just one wee bag" in the first minute.

It must be a Coffeesnobs law that however large your bean stash is, it always needs just one more variety to complete it (until next month).

    Im addicted, but loving it!

I was busy studying last night and totally forgot about bean bay.

When I remembered this morning, I was pleased to see there was still some tea left, which was what I was after anyway. I would have liked some more yirg for my stash, but there is always next time and I have plenty of other nice beans to last me for a while yet.

For those of you who are angry you missed out, it is only a bean bay, there are more important things in life.

So much wasted energy on being angry.
