BeanBay Monthly Sale - TUESDAY 11th August 2009

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

    BeanBay Monthly Sale
    TUESDAY 11th August 2009

20:00 QLD, ACT, NSW, VIC, TAS
    19:30 SA, NT
    18:00 WA

In BeanBay starting at the above local times we will have the following green beans:

Sulawesi Tana Torajah Kalosi - This is a grade one Torajah from our latest Indo shipment. Deep motley green in colour from the wet hulling. Processing is good, a few splits and chips (like wet hulled Indos normally get) but a fairly even roaster. Rich, deep body in an espresso with a cleaner lingering finish than some of the earthier Sulawesi coffees. A great single origin coffee. $9/kg*

Sumatra Mandheling Mystic TP - (TP=Triple Picked) Wet Hulled, blue/green large beans that produce a ton of chaff when roasting. Loads of body with a lingering rich earthy taste. Works well in milk and as espresso in the CS9-CS10 range. $10/kg*

Ethiopian Gambella Naturals. Its back, the new crop of the ugly bean but this year its far less ugly. This years crop looks like a cross between a yirg and a harrar with a long thin bean shape typical of the old growth Ethiopian trees. Sun dried, dry process and produces rich dark syrupy espresso shots full of earthy spice. Great as a bold single origin or add it to a base bean to tame it a little. $9/kg*

Ethiopia Harar Star - produced by MOPLACO (MOcca PLAntation COffee). A dry processed Ethiopain Harar (Harrar) and by far the most expensive one that we have ever landed. It roasts fairly evenly with only the odd yellow bean and produces a soft, mid bodied cup with fruity berry notes. Great at a CS9 roast depth but might work either side ok too. $13/kg*

Papua New Guinea Wahgi AA. Another CS’r favourite, very well processed, very large beans that produce a sweet espresso at CS9-CS10 and a brighter “cut through milk” type shot as CS8-CS9 roast depth. Very easy to roast and get great results. $11/kg*

    And:
    Java Washed Grade 1 Robusta
    Java Blawan Estate WP1
    Sumatra Sipangan Bolon Grade 1
    Brazil Original Bourbon

    And a new tea:
    Sumatran Orange Pekoe Superior

    And even:
Raw Cocao Beans - Balinese Wild Cocao
Raw Cocao Beans - Mexico Soconusco

All green beans are packed into 2.5kg lots in CoffeeSnobs natural cotton bags. These are perfect for storing your beans in a cool dark place for years.

    * pricing includes $0.50/kg FairCrack donation.

    Pickup Points

QLD - Veneziano - West End
NSW - Real Coffee – Newcastle
    NSW - "cksyd" - Kellyville
    NSW - Cuppacoffee - Sylvania
NSW - Coffee Parts – Pagewood
    ACT - "Cruiserman" – Calwell
    VIC - Veneziano - Abbotsford (Sat 22/8/09 10:30-11:30)
    TAS - "Alistair1" - Launceston
    TAS - "rayzurhed" – Burnie
    TAS - "ParaM" – Hobart
SA - The Coffee Barun - Sefton Park
    WA - "Caffeinefreak" – Wembley

As always, orders can be shipped using Australia Post express satchels which is always the quickest method of getting your order.

Roasted beans and other BeanBay items can be shipped to the pickup points too. Roasted orders will be roasted as close to the shipping day as we can manage to ensure you still get fresh roasted beans.

We do ask that anything bought in BeanBay is paid for the same day so it wont hold-up other CSrs orders. Any pickup point order that isnt paid for when we freight the interstate beans will not ship and you will either incur higher transport costs or the order will be cancelled without notice.

We hope to get all the beans to the pickup points by the end of the month

This delivery date is a best guess as we are often at the whim of couriers around the country. Generally when the beans arrive at the pickup point someone will post in this thread to let you know the time/date that you should meet for the pickup.

    Please note:
Due to the small quantity of this Ethiopian Harar it will be limited to a single 2.5kg per person for the first half hour. Any still in BeanBay after that will go back into the pool for people to grab whatever they like.

    **cack** @ Tim Tam joke

Yes, the Whagi will go fast and people will missout (and sadly get upset) but we are waiting on more to arrive for the next BeanBay... it just didnt quite make it in time for this one.

With 10 or more coffees, 6 teas, 2 cocoas and 2 cacao beans there is plenty of choice for everyone.

    Enjoy!

Sounds great Andy, I hope to have success this month, was too late for some offerings last month, gotta be quick I see.
As a novice to the art of roasting, Im very intrigued with the raw Cacao beans, whats the deal there with home roasting and processing?

Ooohhhh... I love this time of the month! Pity I have a tennis lesson at 7.30. Ill just cross my fingers that it rains and gets postponed. It has almost every week so far :-P Gotta love Tassie!

So Andy, does the quality of the harrar match its higher price? Not that I care too much -- Can never buy too much harrar!

I notice that all the featured beans this week are from either Ethiopia or Indonesian/png? Is this just how it turned out, or does coffee availability depend on what season we are in?

Im also a fan of Orange Pekoe Tea -- so Ill be building up my selection of tea for work!

Roasting...easy! You should be able to do it on whatever coffee roasting setup you have, or if not simply in your oven. Search for chocolate alchemy for much advice.

Processing is more difficult. Jump to the Mmmmm...chocolate thread under wishing well for chocolate info. Im going great in my chocolate making. Put any questions you have up on the chocolate thread and I will do my best to answer them for you. Will check it tonight.

Hard to tell. All the best African coffees have had a very sharp price rise, great Kenyans are $13-$15+ and we are seeing similar from all African countries. I think this Harar is a ripper (else I wouldnt have bought it). It roasts pretty evenly for a dry process bean and is full of blueberry goodness in the cup. I think it justifies the price, it will be interesting to hear thoughts from other CSrs after they roast it.

... a bit of both and the other variable is my own bias ;-)

These are amazing coffees and we grab them as soon as they land here. The indos we cupped 3-4 months ago and pre-bought nearly $20k worth of them! Crop and shipping cycles play a big part but there are times of the year where particular countries are really good too. We have a pile of Centrals and South American heading here over the next couple of months so it will look like a central bais then.

Chalk and cheese... we have had multiple Kuda Mas samples over the years and they never get close this level of bean. Will be interesting to see if you agree.

    Another nice line up Andy.

Were really enjoying the China Pearl at home and the customers love the PNG, Darjeeling, Chai, and Red African. Consider myself and our customers to be very fortunate to have so many CoffeeSnobs products on the shelves.

    :)

There was a Torajah in the February BeanBay (Sulawesi Rante Kapua Torajah). Would this be significantly different? I googled Torajah and found Toraja refers to the highland people of Sulawesi so I guess the answer is yes, it might well be different (or not *:-/)

When everyone has made their purchases tonight (or even before) you might also consider participating in this months Bean Club

Yep. Coffee changes across the same farm, region, country. The single biggest difference is often the processing between lots. The Rante Kapua Torajah from earlier in the year was a traditional washed coffee (unusual for the region) and the Tana Torajah Kalosi this month is a wet hulled (more usual). The grading of this is also different. In the roaster this produces far more chaff, in the cup this one is earthier and has more body.
Ignore the names, try the coffee blind and use your senses to see just how different two coffees from close proximity can be (works for me!)

Dont always trust google for coffee research... I expect google will tell you "Blue Mountain" is west of Sydney not a coffee area in Jamaica
    :D

The biggest gotcha with google for coffee research is that the producers of coffee are not the ones posting content, mostly its a broker or a middleman who has "best guessed" the verbal to written translation. Well that and the fact that anglo text on the bags is randomly spelt makes it very hard to hope that a word search will return the right answer.

Tana Torajah or Toraja or Torrajah (I have seen all on bags) is the area, Kalosi or Kallosi or Kalossi is the town.

We have even had spelling change from the same estate but different crop years.

This isnt unique to coffee growing areas either. The latte championships were in Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland or Deutschland for short) the town was Cologne (or Koln or Köln or Kölner or Kolner or even Kölen and Kolen)

    Confused?
I think Ill stop typing now.

Not at all. Thanks for that. Clear as .....a blank shot?!! :-?

I agree that the name doesnt matter or indicate what to expect just because it shares a name with other beans from a region.

Theres been a few discussions about Aricha and even Beloya but I found out that Yirgacheffe is the central point to these places and I wondered if a bean labeled as Yirgacheffe could actually come from these places - but I told myself that was unlikely. But given my experience of Yirg beans and the reports on the Aricha beans, there must be something wonderful about that part of the world to produce such extraordinary coffee.

    Gday,

First post to CS, very recent member so hello to all.

Further to Andys post, just like to add that Tana Torajah (spelling varies) definitely exists (as a region) as I had the great fortune to work there a few years back. It is an amazing place, breathtakingly beautiful with very friendly local folks. Ironically, I struggled to get a good cup of coffee there but did secure some mighty fine beans.

    cheers,
    Andrew

Welcome Andrewski and thanks for the clarification. The link in my earlier post does indeed state The Toraja are an ethnic group indigenous to a mountainous region of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Their population is approximately 650,000, of which 450,000 still live in the regency of Tana Toraja ("Land of Toraja")

Also linked to from the same webpage is this Wikipedia page with the usual caveat about not taking what you read on the web as gospel

Re: BeanBay Monthly Sale - TUESDAY 11th August 2009

    Thanks from me, too, Andy!

Managed to net myself 7 bags all up of beans this BeanBay (yee-hah tax refund!).

Like WSully, I went to go into the Wahgi while there was still 14kg left and the system froze on me and when I unlocked it about 25 seconds later, theyd all gone! I lurked around and refreshed enough though to luck upon someone returning 2.5kg back into the bucket, so snapped it up quick as a blink! I knew if I refreshed enough times (read 100 or thereabouts) someone would have buyers remorse..thanks to whoever you were!

Also grabbed myself a couple of keyrings (tragic, I know), a Green Starter Pack - Ive been putting this one off for a while until I had the money - some double dutch coca and some more Darjeeling.

Poor James at Real Coffee is going to have a heart attack when he sees all the boxes turning up!

    :)

    Cheers
    Di

...and the delivery guy will be looking for a free coffee as a "fuel surcharge" I expect.

Damn, missed out on the Waghi. No matter, considering I placed the order on an iPhone I think I did quite well to get everthing else!

Slight addendum to my order, Andy - I just dropped back into BeanBay and someone had returned another 2.5 of the Waghi, so snapped that up also, as well as some of the Ethopian Natural, so youll have two separate orders from me and two separate payments coming through.

Hope its not too confusing but, knowing yours and Paulas efficiency, it will all be sorted!

    :-*

    Cheers

What happened to the "new" shipping option, I was waiting to see price and try that out thinking it was cheaper than Aust Post?

In the future the option might be there.
    (a work in progress)

We are looking at a new courier option that will get beans around the country faster, with better tracking and potentialy an even cheaper price when they see our volumes over a couple of month period.
"We are looking" was the key.

Ok, it was in the BeanBay email so perhaps I mislead myself then

    --
So if you can get beans delivered to your workplace please change your address in BeanBay (under user details).
    --

Thought that meant like now, not later.

Thanks Andy, too many good coffee to pick from I had a huge dilemma on where to allocate the available resources :-/
