    BeanBay GREEN sale - 10th Oct 2010

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    coffeesnobs.com.au
    Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale

    Sunday 10th October
    8pm AEDT (Daylight Savings)

    7pm QLD
    8pm ACT, NSW, VIC, TAS
    7.30pm SA
    6.30pm NT
    5pm WA

The beans available at the above date/times will be:

Cup Of Excellence Nicaragua 2010 - La Bendicion $39.50/kg*
Misael Saucedo Olivera has been growing coffee on this farm for 18 years. The varietal is a Maragogype (think as big as peanuts) and it was washed and sun dried. The Cup of Excellence judges scored this 87.19 and their Flavour/Aroma descriptors were: green apple, red berry, toast, apricot, peach, banana, black cherry, chocolate, leather, blueberry. Acidity: lively, crispy, bright, balanced. Other: rich body, walnut, hazelnut, long aftertaste. You may not find the same fruit salad in the cup but this is still one of the finest Nicaraguan coffees this season.

    El Salvador Chaparrastique $9.50/kg*
This washed, high grown and organic El Salvador coffee was easy to roast and very well graded. In the espresso cup it produced a very sweet, syrupy pour that had a mouth feel like cream at a CS9 roast depth. I tried taking it darker too and while it was drinkable the body and sweetness faded quickly. Stick to lighter (CS8-9) roasts for best results.

    Nepal Plantec Estate $24.50/kg*
This is the first Nepalese coffee that I have ever tried. The Plantec Estate is 700 meters above sea level on the Trisuli River at the base of the Ganesh Himal mountain range and they claim to the worlds most northern coffee plantation. This was certified organic at origin by USDA and is a Caturra Varietal. In the cup its a mid bodied with a great grind aroma that I would compare to Yirgacheffe in style (but not in looks). Interesting, exotic and expensive thanks to the fact its air freighted out of Nepal.

    Cuba Turquino $13/kg*
The last time we had the Cuba Turquino I made tasting notes that said "initially very sweet with a good body and then a long dry nearly peppery aftertaste similar to the tannins in strong black tea" and I agree with those thoughts on this crop too. Its an interesting coffee that might be sweeter this time but still has the unique drying, peppery linger in the finish.

    * Prices include a $0.50/kg FairCrack donation. All beans are packed in 2.5kg cotton bags which are perfect for storing your beans in.

    Pickup Points

QLD - Veneziano - West End
NSW - Coffee Parts – Pagewood
    NSW - Cuppacoffee - Sylvania
    NSW - "cksyd" - Kellyville
    TAS - "ParaM" – Hobart
SA - The Coffee Barun - Sefton Park
    WA - "Caffeinefreak" – Wembley
    VIC - Veneziano - Abbotsford --- (23/10/2010 10.30-11.30)

We hope to get beans to the pickup points by: 23/10/2010

This delivery date is a best guess as we are often at the whim of couriers around the country. Generally when the beans arrive at the pickup point someone will post in this thread to let you know the time/date that you should meet for the pickup.

Feel free to discuss pickup point pickups and plan the social get togethers (eg: who is bringing cake) in this thread.

    Some additional "housework" notes...

Please check the kick-off times above. *Daylight savings makes for some weird times around the country.

Speaking of time, I nearly made the sale kick off at 10 past 10pm so we had 10/10/10 10:10:10 for the date and time. I look forward to Remembrance Day next year!

Pickup Point freight is now $1.50/kg to help cover the last few freight price rises and bring it closer to actual cost. *

Vic pickup is at Venziano this month.

PLEASE pay when you order. *It makes everything run smoothy. Life is way too short/busy to waste it chasing payments.

Im not roasting on the 13th Oct so get your roasted orders in before the 10th or it will be roasted on Sunday 17th.

Phew, I have no doubt that all of Andys offerings are exemplary but there is nothing there that actually jumps out and says "you must have some of me"..........So I may be able to resist temptation ::) and sit out this BeanBay. My storage cabinet is maxed out :-[ and the racks are straining.........maybe I need to build a larger cabinet ;)

    Thanks Andy,

Got the email this time, been checking everyday online to make sure.

Will get in and see what I can grab.

Been putting together a KKTO over the last week and I can see one big floor in my plans - 600gm at a go, Ill eat through my supplies in no time and thats just getting it broken in / tested.

BTW "10/10/10 10:10:10" would of been worth the late start.

Yeah, I want to know which world judge found "banana" in his cup because after 43 years and thousands of coffees I have never found banana in anything except a banana

Its great coffee but just dont be surprised if you cannot find all those fruits.

You are right, such a small origin and so close to the USA I have no doubt they could consume the whole lot given half a chance.

We will have similar problems as a more westernised China starts to buy whole origins in the future too.

Enjoy the variety and the price while you can!

Andy, I bought the starter pack off you last month and so far so good. My first attempts at roasting have been reasonably successful, to the point I almost need a new batch of green beans!

In regards to the BeanBay sales/drop off points etc, is this only for the 4 new offerings? Or am I able to purchase other beans as shown on your BeanBay thread. Im not completely comfortable spending $30+ per kilo while Im such a novice at roasting.

    Cheers.

I will try the Cuban for sure. I am looking for a bean with a smoky finish. I am putting a Turkish coffee blend together. Any ideas? So far I found only the Yemeny beans to come close to what I need.

Will the La Bendicion be sold in 1kg bags or will it still be the usual 2.5kg?

I can vouch for the Nepalese coffee.... not only exclusive but if its anything like the Nepalese coffee i bought around this time last year it will be a winner. It is some of the highest grown coffee in the world. Due to snow on the mountain top, it can not physically be grown any higher.
I could not wait for it to degas properly but still found very full mouth feel and rich as an espresso.

A very nice selection this month and its almost time i purchased again. My cupboard is getting a bit of space in it :)

As Greg said... anything you buy in the BeanBay pages during these few days each month can be freighted to a pickup point for $1.50/kg. *BeanBay will always show the all the freight options available at the time of ordering.

Keep in mind that there are plenty of bad coffees in a supermarket for $30/kg, the difference here is the for similar money you can purchase the best of the Nicaraguan coffee competitions. *

Most commercial Turkish coffee uses Brazil Santos, we havnt seen a good sample of Santos for a few years but it should be easy to find in lower grades.

All beans are packed in 2.5kg cotton bags which are perfect for storing your beans in.
...and I should mention that if anyone buys 15kg (of the Cup of Excellence) it will come as a single big vacuum sealed brick (if they want it in original packaging).

Went with some Cuban, some of the El Salvador and some Decaf WOW for the better half (and possibly me, given how much i miss Espresso WOW).
As always, transferred the payment across straight away.

I was tempted by the CoE but i want a little more roasting experience before i start roasting the more high end (price wise) beans.

No, they are "normal" bean size. All the pictures in the green bean section of BeanBay are of the actual coffees taken on a CS bag so you can see scale of beans. (which is why I changed to using the bag as a background).

The photo process is to grab a random bag of each, tip 300g odd onto the bag, move the beans away from the writing and take a picture. I later use photoshop to crop and bevel the image but any ugly beans (if any) stay in the picture so it really does represent what you should find when you open your bag.

I couldnt resist at least trying the COE.... I figure if I dont tell my wife about the cost, she wont care - especially after she tastes it :)

cheers again mate, and please keep up the good work. I (for one), really appreciate the fantastic service along with cheap freight to Tassie. If youre ever down this way youll have to drop in for a cuppa.

Re: BeanBay GREEN sale - 10th Oct 2010

I am trying very hard to resist adding to a bean storage area already groaning. Fortunately, I still have an untouched Nicaraguan CoE from last year but I think I might have to find some room for the Nepali.

This was certified organic at origin by USDA and is a Caturra Varietal. In the cup its a mid bodied with a great grind aroma that I would compare to Yirgacheffe in style (but not in looks).
    From the CoffeeResearch site:
Caturra - Caturra is a mutation of Coffee Bourbon discovered in Brazil. It is a mutation with high production and good quality, but requires extensive care and fertilization. It is short with a thick core and has many secondary branches. It has large leaves with wavy borders similar to Coffee Bourbon. It adapts well to almost any environment, but does best between 1,500-5,500 feet with annual precipitation between 2,500-3,500 mm. At higher altitudes quality increases, but production decreases.
    From another blog,
Typical cup characteristics are low body, bright, with a typically sweet profile.
Im interested in your "Yirgachefe" reference, Andy. Does it come through in the cup at all?

Resisted temptation on the CoE, but have well & truly stocked up on a selection of others that should keep us happy through to errr... the middle of next year? ;D

Oh dont tempt me so :o

After being away from real coffee for the last 4-5 months or so but still buying up here, my stash has dramatically increased in size, along with the frustration of not being able to taste them :-[ Sometimes I dont know whether to curse or bless you Andy, the selection each month is so bloody tempting!

Great work, keep it up! :D ;D

Today I ordered both Nepal Plantec and El Salvador Chaparrastique from BeanBay.

Chaparrastique, is one of the most active volcanoes in El Salvador.

I am loyal to Nepal as I trekked in the foothills of the Himalayas years ago. Including the area where this coffee was grown. A beautiful country with wonderful people. Many are poor subsistence farmers.

Plantec claim to be the only producer and exporter of superior quality Himalayan snow water washed shade grown/organic/sundried green beans from the Himalayas.

The ref to the Yirg was more about the huge grind aroma and lighter body. Shots a freind and I had tonight were pulled much tighter and yielded better body than in my first roasting/testing of this. Its a pretty bold coffee and great as a doppio espresso. Im sure we will see some great feedback on this one.

Everyone who had camped beside a river knows the best and cleanest water is upstream... Everest is pretty much upstream of everywhere and I expect the water would be pretty good at the farm.

Re: BeanBay GREEN sale - 10th Oct 2010

I have closed all the interstate pickup options in BeanBay except Victoria (as I drive that one there myself)

The pickup point orders will be packed and will freight today and tomorrow. Someone will post in this thread when they arrive and are ready to collect.

    Enjoy!

    Andy

I received my BeanBay order today and have already done a roast of the snow water washed shade grown/organic/sundried green beans from the Himalayas. The Nepal Plantec Estate.

I couldn’t wait for it to degas before having a taste. Straight out of the roaster it is a little earthy, possibly the yak poo showing through. There was a very pleasant after taste that lingered on. I will try it again after a couple of days.

Received my BeanBay order this morning (nice one Andy, thanx for that). Roasted a batch of the Nicaraguan La Bendicion COE 2010 this afternoon. A big bean as per the notes. Roasting profile seemed similiar to PNG, looks good, smells good, nice even roast to about CS9, just into 2nd crack. [smiley=happy.gif]

Resisted the temptation and slipped it straight into a bag, sealed it, and will rest it for 3 days or so.

Looks like your going to have to settle for cow and buffalo poo Andy, pretty similar. http://www.plantecnepal.com/main.php?action=growning

Everyone who had camped beside a river knows the best and cleanest water is upstream...

Found my beans behind the rubbish bins in my car port this arvo, dont know when it arrived and didnt select or pay for courier.

I selected The Coffee Barun pickup point in SA.

Not unhappy, the beans are dry despite the rain last night and today, and I get them quicker without paying extra. Only down side is I miss out on lunch and coffee at Marks when I pick up.

    Cheers

Go into My Previous orders in the BeanBay section. If you check your most recent invoice (if you have more than one) it will show you what shipping method you selected.

If it shows as Coffee Barun, you might want to slip Andy an email saying that your order was delivered to your home
