Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale - 14th Nov 2010

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    coffeesnobs.com.au
    Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale

    Sunday 14th November
    8pm AEDT (Daylight Savings)

    7pm QLD
    8pm ACT, NSW, VIC, TAS
    7.30pm SA
    6.30pm NT
    5pm WA

The beans available at the above date/times will be:

    Bolivia Green Mountain Estate $10/kg
Green Mountain Estate is located in the Caranavi high country of Bolivia and everything they produce is shade grown and certified organic by the Organic Crop Improvement Association (OCIA). This coffee produces a really big bodied espresso, smooth and heavy with low acidity and an initial sweetness at a CS9 roast depth. At a lighter CS8 roast it had a sharper, dryer finish and the sweetness not as pronounced but both worked well as a dopio and in milk.

Haiti Grand Cru de Beaumont $21/kg
We landed a tiny amount of this a while ago and it sold in 12 seconds. The rest of our shipment has just arrived so those that missed-out have a chance to try the very best that Haiti produce.

    Indian Monsoon Malabar AA $9.50/kg
These beans have been left to dry in large warehouses that are exposed to the moist winds during the Indian monsoon season. This unique process leaves a bean with nearly no acidity, a pale colour and about 20% less density. In the espresso its all body with heavy jelly like crema which can be drunk as a single origin but also works well a component of a complex blend. NOTE: Due to the lower bean density these are packed in 2kg lots.

Cup Of Excellence Nicaragua 2010 - La Bendicion
    Nepal Plantec Estate
    Cuba Turquino
    Peru Ceja de Selva Estate
    Ethiopian Gambella Sundried
    Ethiopian Harrar Longberry
    Ethiopian Guna Limmu
    Brazil Pulped Natural
    El Salvador Chaparrastique
    India Mysore Nuggets Extra Bold
    Mexico Yeni Navan Typica
    ...and more!

    * Prices will include a $0.50/kg FairCrack donation. All beans are packed in 2.5kg cotton bags which are perfect for storing your beans in.

    Pickup Points

QLD - Veneziano - West End
    NSW - Coffee Parts Pagewood
    NSW - Cuppacoffee - Sylvania
    NSW - "cksyd" - Kellyville
    TAS - "ParaM" Hobart
SA - The Coffee Barun - Sefton Park
    WA - "Caffeinefreak" Wembley
    VIC - Veneziano - Abbotsford --- (27/11/2010 10.30-11.30)

We hope to get beans to the pickup points by: 26/11/2010

This delivery date is a best guess as we are often at the whim of couriers around the country. Generally when the beans arrive at the pickup point someone will post in this thread to let you know the time/date that you should meet for the pickup.

Feel free to discuss pickup point pickups and plan the social get togethers (eg: who is bringing cake) in this thread.

Re: Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale - 14th Nov 2010

    Excellent!!!

Ive really been craving some new beans to work with over the last few weeks so im glad to see the sale come around again, and even more glad to yet again see beans from regions that ive not had the chance to roast before.

Ive had some brown Malabar before and found it quite tricky, both in the grinder and the machine, but im keen to finally roast it myself and see what i can do with it.

I notice the Brazil Pulped is back, too.
Really need to get some for some of my planned blending experiments.

My list of wants/likely purchases is extra long this month.

Id love to finally come to the pickup point meet at First Pour but ill be hard pressed waiting the day or two for courier delivery, let alone waiting until the 27th. *:-[

You can always come for a coffee and a chat anyway. We always have a few CSrs that freight their beans and then come to the pickup for the social stuff.

Yep. *I posted this thread first, then put it on twitter for the CoffeeSnobs toolbar (chicken and the egg stuff as I need the thread before I can link to it), then created the "pickup point options" and the email is next on the list.

So, please chill out dudes... its all part of a bigger process that I dont have a magic "spam the planet" button for.

    Hi Andy,

How does this Monsoon compare to the last lot - Ive been holding onto that bag dearly but if this is equal or better, its time to aim the hg at the MM once again!

    Cheers,
    Matthew

Yep, equal or better it is!

Im really fussy about our Monsoon samples which is why we only ever endup with great ones.

You can get generic monoon coffees from all the standard commercial brokers all year round but instead we wait for the direct shipment to get the "good stuff" that doesnt smell like dirty socks
    8-)

Oh, and we landed plenty of it too!

Re: Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale - 14th Nov 2010

Im down to my last bag of Indian Monsoon Malabar, I usually get two of those, and one of anything new on the half annual beanbay purchase. It is my favourite for roasting in the popper, its large light and bouncy, mild roasted prior to 2nd crack, and in the cup has always delivered a tasty milk coffee for a wide audience.

Im wanting an earlier supply (of anything) to try put some brews on for Movember morning tea donations (since my Mo isnt raising anything).
Looking at Beanbay shows a warehouse of available greens right now.

Q: Is beanbay meant to be open for green sales? Last time I used it the quantities became available after the opening time. Im guessing now theyre always there, save for the selected quantities released for the traditional monthly beanbay.

    Yes.
Beanbay is always open, its just that once a month we have a sale where Andy introduces new (or returning) beans to Beanbay, in this months case, the Malabar, the Grand Cru and the Bolivian.

You can order whatever beans are currently in Beanbay whenever you like, but if you want any of this months new offering, you have to wait until the sale opens on Sunday night.

Yep, we buy much more coffee at a time now that we have space at the new Snobbery so we can carry stock af beans all year round.

Each month the new arrivals are released (mid month-ish) via a BeanBay-Green sale. Some will be limited and will runout on the night, others will be there for people to buy over the coming few weeks.

The monthly BeanBay-Green sale still makes sense as its hte only way to everyone a crack at the new arrivals at the same time.

    Enjoy!

Well there is earthy and then there is musty.

Earthy, dry, spicy is good, musty just smells like mold.

    Hi Rocky,
Have a look after 5pm today (Sunday) in Beanbay and make your purchase. Select "Beanbay Pickup" if you want to be a part of our social gathering at Caffeinefreaks place. He will then post an announcement of the date of pick up. Please keep an eye on this thread often. Apart from taking advantage of the cheaper rate of postage per kilo of beans, you get the chance to see what a motley friendly crew of CSers we are ;)
Otherwise you can purchase anytime on Beanbay what you want and expect a swift delivery to your doorstep.

Thank you Andy, I did get it.

Just a little unusual that I saw it on here first without the regular email saying it was happening.

Sure. Its a balance of timing that I dont always get as close together as I like.

We need the post here first so the tweet and the email have something to point to.

I then tweet, then do the email. Depending on timing, I try and send the email overnight to save some load on the server as we are sending nearly 13000 emails now which is enough to make us look like spammers to some internet hosts!

As a rule I tend to do the post, the tweet and the emails all after midnight when most "normal" people are in bed. This time I thought I would get the first two out early so I could go to bed at a reasonable time (which didnt happen) so I think next time Ill just revert to doing the whole thing at silly o clock.

...at least it "appears" that they all happened together that way.
    8-)

Oh, and I expect to see some decaf orders from the two people that promptly replied to my 3am email.
    ;)

For the difference in price for postage, I might offer to be a pickup point (or at least a delivery point and then work out the best pick up point for everyone, since I travel between Newcastle and Wyong almost every day) for Newcastle/Central Coast *:)

Mmm I think I need to change my hair colour, once I put in all my products to buy it came up with much better options, Andy I love how youve done the shipping on the website :)

    Thanks!

Credit goes to our favourite code-monkey "Geekrocket" who managed to get the website to understand all the different combinations of freight. He can do amazing work if you can get him into the "cage" for a day or two... Wild code-monkeys can be really hard to catch!

The system works out the options and pricing depending on where you are and how much you are freighting. All our freight is slightly cheaper than the actual cost so (in effect, site sponsor subsidised) and the back-end is really complicated.

AustPost satchels are fairly straight forward, $10 for a 3kg satchel and $15 for a 5kg satchel anywhere in Oz but the different courier and e-parcel options change depending on where you are and the total weight of your order. At the checkout of BeanBay you will always see all the shipping options available at the best price possible, you can then determine the speed vs price that suits.

My end of the freight system also exports all the address information into the different courier software packages to print the labels. Its all a work of art.

While talking about freight, this would be a good time to mention something...

If you put your address as:

    Mr Smith
    12 Some Street
    North Sydney
    Sydney
    2600

The courier software will see "Sydney" as the town and change the postcode to 2000. You wont get your beans delivered!

If you live in North Sydney then your address is:

    Mr Smith
    12 Some Street
    North Sydney
    2600

We get the same sort of wrong addresses all over the country, if you live in Prahan you live in Prahan... not Prahan, Melbourne.

We get 5 of these a week, some I notice when we print the labels and I then have to reprint a manual label but some I wont know about and at best it will take a few extra days for you to get your delivery, as worst it will be returned to me.

PLEASE EVERYONE... save me some time, grief and money and check your address is correct in BeanBay before you place an order.

    Ta.

Just checking I understand the proecess as Im also a newbie.
If I order for Melbourne pickup, I presumably have to get to Veneziano on the morning of Saturday 27th?

As I work Saturdays, Im guessing pickup isnt an option and Id have to pay for Express post satchel. Correct?

Are Melb pickups always on Saturday?

As I work Saturdays, Im guessing pickup isnt an option and Id have to pay for Express post satchel. Correct?
For those of us in Melbourne, the courier option is always the most cost effective.
If fact, its ridiculously cheap even if youre shipping only a couple of kilos of beans and almost literally unbelievable if youre shipping a decent amount (as low as 35c a kilo).

As Andy has said before, he subsidises the shipping which is how he manages to make it so damn cheap for us lucky CSers.

Scored some Monsoon Malabar and Mysore Nuggets.

Merlos bean of the month is Monsoon Malabar so I tried one recently and loved it - had to have some of my own.

As for the other one, I just cant wait to tell my mates their drinking a cup of mysore nuggets *;D

Excellent, just like shapeshifter, this was my first BeanBay and I also got what I wanted. I am looking forward to meeting fellow CS at Veneziano for pick up.

    Phew... I got in late.
(didnt finish roasting till 8pm... 30 minutes from home) so am happy to see everything went smoothly for the kick-off.

All the PayPal paid orders will ship tomorrow, the bank transfers will appear in our account on Tuesday and will ship the same day, and the pickup point orders will ship Wednesday if they are paid.

    Lots of beans for everyone.

    Enjoy!

    Yippee

    Wow!

Ive been holding off Beanbay for a few months while I cleared some of my older stock, and I was fully expecting to miss out on everything, since I knew I wouldnt be able to politely get to a computer until an hour after the frenzy started.

Andy must have been buying big because I got what I most wanted (the Monsoon and Bolivian) and was able to come back again for the Haiti at a second bite.

One happy camper here. My wife is going to kill me, though. One drawback of being married to a tea-drinker... ::)

Incidentally, can anyone enlighten me as to what the "T.C.T.L." on the Haiti label stands for? Just curious...

I have just put in a late order and got what I wanted. The Haiti and Bolivian.

I have not been a fan of Monsoon. Going on what I read at this site, I may not have rested it long enough post roast.

    Thanks Andy.

Thought I would try some of the Haitian and Monsoon this month which left 500g in the pack. The extra weight was filled nicely with some Cote dIvoire Red African Cocoa, so the non coffee drinkers are in for a treat.

    Thanks Andy.

    Coffeemate,
As has been said here many times - Taste is subjective.
Given this is your first post, are you talking about roasting yourself?
    First roasting effort or not?

I have roasted numerous beans from this site over the years and I have yet to find an arabica that I did not like.
Some beans have been sublime, some outstanding, some very nice and some good, but always nice.

We only drink milk based usually and have developed our favourites over the years.

For every person who swears Monsoon Malabar is not right in milk, there will likely be another saying it is the best way to drink it.

Its really up to you. Get em, roast em, try em!

    Brett.

Well, Im halfway through the crazy 48 hours of the month.

Paula and I got all the PayPal orders out today (just) so they will be landing with most people via the couriers and AustPost tomorrow.

The bank transfers will appear in our account in the morning and we will do it all again!

I have closed-off all the pickup points so they can be packed tomorrow with the exception of Melbourne as that one wont ship till pickup day.

    Happy roasting!
