Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale - Sunday 13th March 2011

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    coffeesnobs.com.au
    Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale

    Sunday 13th March 2011
8pm AEDT (East Coast Daylight Savings Time)

    7pm QLD
    8pm ACT, NSW, VIC, TAS
    7.30pm SA
    6.30pm NT
    5pm WA

The beans available at the above date/times will be:

    Flores Gunung Inerie $12/kg*
From an emerging specialty growing region this Flores is a fully washed arabica grown in the shadows of the Gunung Inerie volcano. Roast testing of this one found that at slower, darker than usual roast around CS10 produced loads of dark cocoa with a lingering finish.

    Java Ijen Sundried $11/kg*
It’s been 6 years since we have had access to the Java Ijen coffee. This is a fully washed and sundried coffee that is the original java in the famous "Mocha Java" blend. Clean, well processed and well graded this coffee is easy to roast and as an espresso produced great body, low acidity and finished with a creamy mouthfeel. Another great Indo coffee.

    Laos Dong Hua Sao $9.50/kg*
This is the first time that we have sold a Laos coffee. This Arabica comes from the Dong Hua Sao forest and has been through a process similar to monsooning which leaves the coffee at a lower density with less acidity. At a CS9 roast depth its bold with a sharp, punchy finish which certainly stands-up to milk. Interesting coffee and I look forward to more from the region in the future.

    Yemen Al-Hajj Boaan $26/kg*
Like the late Big Kev, Im excited! The first of 5 different regional Yemen beans has arrived and its a ripper. The Al-Hajj Boaan is a larger graded bean than other Yemen offerings in the past and even as a green bean is an amazing coffee with a sweet, ripe fruit and red wine aroma. The same rich fruitiness appears in the cup with a heavy bodied espresso that will have you coming back for more.

    Java Kalistat Estate $21/kg*
This is the winning entry for the best Java coffee in the recent Specialty Coffee Association Indonesia coffee sales. Very clean full washed coffee which is well graded and hand sorted. In the cup it produces a mid bodied, balanced and slightly spicy espresso. The very best from the region and we hope to land more similar small lots from their future coffee competitions.

    Costa Rica Cafétalera Herbazu $15/kg*
New crop. Sun dried, semi-washed (miel) honey processed coffee. In the cup its a bright, mid bodied sweet coffee that makes this one of the very best Costa Rican coffees from a Cup of Excellence winning farm.

    * all coffee prices include a 50c/kg FairCrack donation and come in 2.5kg CoffeeSnobs cotton bags.

    Also available:

We have a new pickup in Sydney this month,
Roger from the Erkochurch in Erskinville has offered to host a pickup for those closer to the city. Ercochurch has car parking and is open during the week.

The other pickup change this month is WA, Simon isnt going to be about so Trevor (Greenman) has offered to host the sandgroppers at the Grrenhome this month.

Now thats an impressive lineup, Andy.

Ive never seen Laotian coffee before and despite trying quite a few Indonesian beans, ive never had the pleasure of drinking or roasting beans from Java (or Flores, for that matter) so its going to be exciting to have a chance to roast some of these.

And thats not even mentioning another Yemeni coffee that sounds as amazing as the Bani Ismail and the Herbazu that ive been really enjoying recently at a number of Melbournes better cafes.

I best ask the missus for a loan :-X

I should also note that Ive just been told that Monday is a public holiday in Victoria so beans will ship from the Snobbery on Tuesday (PayPal payments) and Wednesday (Bank transfers will have an extra day lag).

Didnt arrive. Please dont get me started on AQIS, customs, freight forwarders, international or domestic freight carriers.

Ive paid for it, it left Africa at the same time as the previous lot but in a different container that I can only assume has stopped-over at a tropical island for a relax in a deckchair with an umbrella drink or two.... as opposed to being poached by pirates.
    :-?

Maybe next month the rest of the Kenya Peaberry will appear!

Hmm - Ive only just gotten around to purchasing after the last BeanBay (ie, they arrived last Tuesday).* Not sure I can justify any more at this stage, as much as that Ijen sounds nice.*

Then again, I have (finally) been donated a breadmaker - circuit board is now bypassed, just need to insert the thermocouple probe and shorten the paddle.* Should see the green-to-brown purchase ratio increase a bit :)

    Oh no!, a new Yemen?

Oh bother! The coffee stash is starting to encroach on the wine, again.

Drink more wine? drink more coffee? enlarge the storage area?

Now if I push REALLY REALLY hard on that corner, I reckon a bag of the new Yemen, THE FIRST YEMEN OTHER THAN GODS OWN BANI ISMAIL I HAVE EVER SEEN, might just fit in.

    ...Push harder!

    OH YUM!

When I first got acquainted with good coffee--sometime in 1967--it was a Java that was my favourite. Im so looking forward to trying it again.

    And a Yemeni too.

    OH YUM!

    Yemen Al-Hajj Boaan
Some background info on this coffee

Al-Hajj is Arabic for The Pilgrimage but is also part of the name of the owner of (one of?) Yemens biggest coffee traders and Boan is their HQ in Bani Matar district of the capital Sanaa.

I have to say that all the Yenen was bagged into CoffeeSnobs cotton earlier in the week and just walking past the green bean area I can smell the above... unique, stunning and exciting even as a greeen bean!

Sadly we can never land much Yemen and this season stocks are even smaller over there so CSrs will missout. The good news is we do have 4 other Yemens enroute which should be offered over the next couple of months so everyone should get a shot one of them.

in the same way that the definition of late was changed to allow trains to run on time, perhaps a coffeesnob definition of willpower should be made!

as late as Friday lunchtime i thought proudly to myself that i will resist the next beanbay, by Friday night this was in ruins. and it still is

:) denki I think the same thing, nope spent enough on beans, have got a good stash for only one odd person drinking it BUT then I see something that is my favourite espresso bean and go "mmm I might not be able to get more until next year maybe I should" or "oooo I might really like that bean and if I dont buy any there might not be more later on" ;D

I was thinking I wouldnt get any this time...but now Im roasting for a guy at work, and Im low on Peruvian...and my Ethiopian supplies are running dangerously low.

Rather irrelevant that I still have at least 15kg left in other top quality beans (Costa Rica, PNG, Indo, Malawi etc) :)

Re: Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale - Sunday 13th March 2011

    ok all.
Its 5 minutes to BeanBay kick off and I just know its going to give grief this month.

We have tons of web crawler and search engine bots on the site that wont go away... they create a bigger load than the site can handle and you will get lag, some errors and similar.

BeanBay itself should run pretty well, the forum wont.

Sorry in advance for something I cannot control.

The first few clicks in BeanBay were taking a while but within a minute or so it became lightning fast (faster than its ever been before) so i was able to get everything i wanted and get it done pretty quickly.

I couldnt find enough information on the two beans from Java so did what any good CoffeeSnob does, i got both. ;D
I got a bag of all of the other new beans, too :-[

I was going to grab another bag of the Kagongo but there wasnt much there and i know there are a few who totally adore it so i thought id leave it for them.
I hope they were the ones that got it.

    Hey sidoney

Sounds like we will have to organise something depending on how many get beans dropped here.

Either way, we might just organise a roast and coffee at the time.

By the way, love your avatar ;D

    Nah.
Ive been very lucky in getting almost all of the beans ive wanted since starting roasting 6 months ago so it wont hurt me to not have another bag of a certain bean, especially knowing there are others out there who find that bean to be their favourite.

Now if my current absolute favourite bean, the Honduras Pino de Oro COE Lot 3, showed up in Beanbay, i wouldnt have a problem taking a second (or third ;) ) bag. ;D

In all seriousness, the more CSers that get to experience each different bean Andy offers, the better off we all are because the wealth of knowledge and personal experience is spread that little bit wider.

I for one love reading others views on beans, from roasting techniques right through to cupping notes, so hopefully those that got the Kagongo enjoy it and if they are so inclined, pass on their views on the bean on the boards.

    Ah, thats a shame.
I was really thinking of you when i saw 5kgs of it available.

If you cant get any next month (or whenever Andys next batch arrives), im more than happy to send you a kilo out of whats left in my bag given how much you adore it.

Am pleased to announce that Beanbay worked remarkably well via the iPhone and I was able to get some of the Yemen in the first few minutes along with the Java.* Am over in the west this week and was worried Id miss out...thanks to technology I didnt...even though I was about 50kms south of Perth once Beanbay was open. Phew!* 8-)

Nice! I hear stories from time to time that it works on an iPhone but I dont own one so its not really been tested. Geekrocket that wrote the BeanBay software writes really good code that should work in most browsers and platforms and one of the early specs was that it would work on a small screen.

We will work on getting the website a little more stable and a chunk faster over the coming month and see if we can have a super smooth BeanBay next time.

Paid the penalty for getting home late and missing the Yemen.* :(
However, added some Java Kalistat and Nepal Plantec to my growing (in size, not in ground* ::)) stash and ecstatic that once again, I managed to ignore the "not this month Kevo" voices.* ;D
    Happy roasting CSs!

Paid the price of setting an alarm for beanbay & missed out on the Yemen...

Suppose it not a bad thing considering the Gene is still in the "hospital"

Gee wiz, thats quite a few iPhone users... lucky it works!

We will have to take the smart phones more seriously when we have future upgrades... might even find a group of CS beta testers to try new versions before they go live.

Interesting how fast gizmos become mainstream.

Nowadays there are probably nearly as many android users as iphone users.
Most of my browsing is on the phone, if you ever need beta testers, happy to help out.
