Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale - THURSDAY 11th August 2011

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    coffeesnobs.com.au
    Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale

    THURSDAY 11th August
20:00 AEST (Australian Eastern Standard Time)

8pm QLD, ACT, NSW, VIC, TAS
    7.30pm SA, NT
    6pm WA

The beans available at the above date/times will be:

    Burundi Kayanza Kinyovu Lot 1.
This is the first Burundi that we have landed and its a ripper.* Lots of fruit and enough acidity to cut through the milk.* Great espresso shots with body and almost a dried apricot finish.* This is a true micro lot from north Burundi, one of the hardest places in Africa to ship from so the wait for the next one might be a while. $16.50/kg*

    Tanzanian Uru Estate
Uru Estate is located between Moshi and Mt Kilimanjaro and managed by Bente Luther-Medoch.* Bente is a name familiar with CoffeeSnobs as our lady on the ground in Tanzania who has done some amazing work with our FairCrack projects over the last few years.* This estate coffee sets a new benchmark for just how amazing Tanzanian coffee can be.* The farm is Rain Forest Alliance (RFA) certified and thanks to Ralph, it was shipped here in Grainpro bags to ensure it arrived in perfect condition. It roasts well and produces a big bodied cocoa espresso shot with plenty of sweetness and blackcurrant like fruit flavours.* Stunning coffee. $12.50/kg*

    Tanzania Kyaurinde FairCrack Pulped.
Kyaurinde was the fourth pulper that FairCrack funded, we also funded new above ground drying racks so this coffee really has a strong connection with us.* The coffee was picked from wild coffee trees on the southern slopes of Mt Kilimanjaro within walking distance of the village.* All the cherry was then bought back to the central pulping unit (CPU) and pulped, then dried before going to the mill for final processing and bagging.* Ralph also had this packed in Grainpro bags and it shipped with the Uru Estate coffee.* In the cup it has great body, a zing of brightness and ripe fruits with a spicy peppery cocoa finish at CS10. $12.50/kg*

    * price per kilo packed in 2.5kg CoffeeSnobs cotton bags and includes the FairCrack $0.50/kg donation.

You can select direct shipping via Australia Post and Star Track Express along with some other options depending on where you live or you can collect your paid order from...

    Pickup Points

QLD - Veneziano - West End
    NSW - "cksyd" - Kellyville
    NSW - Erkochurch - Erskinville
    TAS - "ParaM" Hobart
SA - Fiefys Specialty Cafe - Adelaide
    WA - "Caffeinefreak" - Wembley
    VIC - Veneziano - Abbotsford (27/8 10:30-11:30)

We hope to get beans to the pickup points by: 19/8/2011

Note: Perth will be cutting it fine and Melbourne will be a week later on 27/8.

This delivery date is a best guess as we are often at the whim of couriers around the country. Generally when the beans arrive at the pickup point someone will post in this thread to let you know the time/date that you should meet for the pickup.

Please dont annoy the pickup points by asking for your beans before they let you know in this thread they are available for collection.

There is plenty of coffee for everyone, we should still have some next BeanBay too (but make no guarantee)

This is the African shipment that I hoped would land prior to the last BeanBay. I had the Kyaurinde in the grinder at the Snobbery today and maybe the Uru or the Burundi tomorrow.

Its a tough choice between these three beans... ahhh the life of a CoffeeSnob!

Whats interesting with the Tanzanian is that the Uru is estate grown, the Kyaurinde is wild picked about 5km away (at a slightly higher altitude), both were processed at the same mill, packed in the same grainpro bags and shipped in the same container to here.

All the packing and logistics after pulping and drying are exactly the same so its a rare chance to try two coffees side by side and taste the growing variables.

Andy wouldnt be giving us the chance if he didnt think it was worthwhile :) the wet & dry processed (same bean) Yunnan we had a while back were certainly different in the roaster and the cup

Ahhh... "up sell" certainly isnt me but I can see it could look like that.
    ;D

Of course to save the up-sell hook up with another local CSr and get one of each between you.

We have plenty of both so everyone should get a future shot at them too.

Down to my last 1-2 kilos of greens.

Looking forward to the Tanzanian Uru Estate as a SO, especially since its Rainforest Alliance as well as part of the Faircrack projects.

Got my eyes on a few others for blends too.

    Enjoy your purchases everyone 8-)

    Soon.

    Per the description:
    ### Waiting on a new shipment to arrive ###

Good luck being more specific than that when customs and international freight are concerned.

    Hi everyone,

Just wondering what the story with getting some of these beans (green of course) into NZ. Does anyone have experience on this, regarding limits, taxes, MAF etc?

Freight is the killer! The little bit of water between AU and NZ makes it one of the most expensive routes in the world. 10kg of beans cost about $13/kg to freight.

Also... we dont ship outside of Australia as the burden of customs forms and queuing in the post office is a time sponge... takes up to an hour extra for us to post something overseas.

Carry-on luggage is the only real way. Plenty of CSrs fly home to NZ with a bag o beans.

The weird thing at the moment is that Jetstar are doing $99 flights to CHCH, thats about 1/2 the price of Australia Post for the 20kg baggage!

    Grin
    Haha
You know whats best about this new Snobby Instant Chai? It gets my better half on the Domobar and learning how to texture her soy milk.
Ive had the Domobar for a little over a year and shes never been game to learn, instead asking me whenever she feels like a coffee (which is always a couple of times a day), but such is her love on this Snobby Instant Chai thats shes now keen on learning how to use the machine properly.

1 peru de selva and a bag of the tanzanian faircrack this time, managed to restrain myself to only 2 bags of which only 1 is really for me, the peru is for someone at work

the burundi sounded interesting and I was very tempted to grab a bag, but I know I need to reduce down my stocks of beans as I have nowhere to put any more I had a laugh

From 0kg to about 25kg in about a month, not bad for someone who only goes through 1kg a month, Im offloading some of my stockpile to friends just to have room and justification if something special pops up in future monthly sales.

More Peru as a staple bean
    Some Mexico Yeni
and the Uru estate for this months special :D

I might have to double my "home" consumption ;)

Thanks Andy for supplying us addicts with our fix :D

While this is off topic and probably warrants its own "ways with Chai" thread, I havent tried this with the CS Chai, but you can make your own Chai Egg Custard (and, if youre game, I guess you could use the steam wand) - 1 egg yolk, 1 cup milk, 1T sugar, 1/2T cornflour, 1 qty chai (I generally use a chai teabag, but whatever works). Make sure the cornflour and sugar is dissolved, heat until boiling, stirring constantly.

Dont knock it till you try it. Its amazing.

Cant wait for my stash to arrive and more importantly meet a few local CSers at the pick up.

Last month when everyone went mad over the Yemeni I was jealous because I dont roast, this month Im glad Andy decided to supply the two specials roasted - I know it must be a huge task for him to roast so much but last month I was thinking "wouldnt it be great if they could roast the specials"
    and they have!

    Im glad!

There are a couple of gotchas...

    1. We roast to order so if carry too many varieties then there isnt enough in some batches to meet the minimum for the roaster. I then have to roast way more then we sell that day and end-up having to try and use the rest myself.

    2. If I drop a variety that we already offer I cop a big pile of email from cranky people.

If we were happy to sell old coffee it would be ok... but that isnt going to happen.

I will try and rotate a few new beans through each month though as I can see the excitement in your post.

Im not sure if this would work but you could potentially offer a roasting surcharge and have it as an option in green beanbay like you have with the grinding options.
that way theres an understanding that its limited stock, and you would only be roasting to order still.
I suppose the gotcha would be youd have to buy 2.5kg of roast.

tough situation but you do a great job as is, so maybe having the odd one on roast is more of a treat for us

Yes, which will only yeild 2kg of roasted. I can 100s of hours in email explaining that one to people that bought green beans or then asked why cant they buy 250g at a time.

...maybe we just rotate the brown offerings each month instead. Then I only have to answer the emails asking "where did xxxxx go?".

Re: Monthly BeanBay GREEN Bean Sale - THURSDAY 11th August 2011

Ah well, just got my quad basket (thanks Tango, and of course Javaphile) and it doesnt fit my Gaggia classic portafilter :( despite me thinking it did based on the description. This might be due to my gaggia being an older (1993) model. No biggie as it DOES fit the Azkoyen standard 58mm p/f and, obviously, the Azkoyen naked p/f.

I guess that gives me another incentive to move the Azkoyen refurb further up the project list.

Would have been nice with a 6am start tomorrow to try out the new toy. At least I have some Ceja De Selva from a previous Beanbay just about at its peak 8 days post roast. :)

Andy, I feel I need to congratulate you on your packing abilities as well.* 3 bags into an eParcel satchel with a packet of instant chai squeezed into the middle.* Oh, and prompt service as always :)

Did you know you can get 4 or 5kg in one of our bags?
Might need to try that :P* Most Ive gone was ~3.5kg, but I concede there was enough room to at least hit the 4kg mark.

...maybe we just rotate the brown offerings each month instead.
If you want to offer occasional roasts, is there a way to mark it in the shopping cart thingy as "Limited Availability" or "One Off" so people understand its a one-off and wont be there next month?

Hopefully will see you all next month, order or not...

Likewise, I missed out on the social side of the WA pickup. I look forward to next month and meeting a few of you for a chat of all things green & brown.
