    (future) Tassie Pickup Point?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

Too late for this BeanBay but we might get it off the ground for the next one...

This is the place to discuss whether you would be interested in a Tasmanian BeanBay pickup point.

Please feel free to add comments and suggestions, and make it known what area of Tasmania you are in so a central / convenient location can be found for all Tasmanian members.

Are you in Tasmania and are you for or against a Tasmanian pickup point, or even a Tasmanian distribution so that all the beans can cross the expensive bit of water together and save on shipping?

    Re: (future) Tassie Pickup Point?

Ive wondered about a Tassie pick up point, trouble always is for a small state, there are some bigish distances between north and south, and certainly some of our snobs are in the beautiful north ( Howdy fellas!).

Im more than happy to be a pick up point for Hobart based or southern snobs, though Dane from Island Espresso is really active in the coffee community down here and has plenty of exciting things going on with his various roasting and barista involvments, so in the interests of getting some upskilling info sharing action, it also may be appropriate to do it through his cafe if a commercial premises is more appropriate ( and if he has the time - just volunteering you there Dane!)

Anyway, in a bean shell - im in for distributing or organising stuff here if needed.

Even if I am still bitter as a spoonful of Nescafe about missing both beanbay offerings this month - GROAN *::)

WOW... nah... theres only a couple of us in the Northwest- as far as I know. Its like an hour and half to Launceston and then another hour and half down to Hobart.
I think were doing pretty well as is..
    Preciate the thought though.

Looks like there are actually a few of us down here?
Im neutral about the pickup. Im happy to pay shipping as I have been, but if there was a pickup point in Hobart Id probably use it.

    I would support a Hobart pick-up point.

Dont know where ill be in 6 months though, so theres not much use volunteering myself (at UTas) as a pick up location :D

    Cheers, Dan.

Thats 3 for Hobart and 2 for the northwest so far... And ParaM is in Hobart as well.
I have some ideas but will wait for a bit to see how many other Tassie members are out there...

    Howdy to you too Baristacrat.

Im in Northwest, pick up point would be nice....
if it could be made to work for us all, but not very often Im down in Hobart,
    or even in Launceston.

However Tasmanian distribution would be a great idea if it could reduce the freight cost to us, and Im sure it could be made to work.

What sort of ideas did you have tasadam?

Im a northwester so any pickup point around and about here would be tops!

I agree with a previous post tho... tassie is a spread out place so it might be a tad difficult (uneconomic).

Keen to hear the outcome tho!

    Re: (future) Tassie Pickup Point?

This is great... Much more response than what I initialy expected for Tassie...
Let your fellow Csers know something is in the wind and we shall see what results. Cheaper bean delivery fot us all perhaps?

I went to a coffee roasting house in Launceston asking about buying green beans. They dont normally sell them but "would sell them to me for the price of roasted beans", $31 per kg.

If businesses like that were really interested in promoting coffee then they would apply an appropriate markup and sell accordingly rather than blow it out of the water.
They surely know what it costs to buy, roast then sell and what their percentages are.
So if they apply the same percentages to green beans then they could open a new market for themselves... *Not interested, and I understand their reasoning, not that I agree with it.
Off topic I know... Seems to be a bit of a habit.

Anyone else out ther in Tassie?

    Re: (future) Tassie Pickup Point?

OK So the crux of my idea is this - keeping freight costs down.
I am planning on asking the company I work for whether I can use the company freight once a month to receive "a box or two". Our companys freight bill annually is a large number, last I heard I think it was in excess of 3 mil. So we get a very good rate.
If they allow this and let me pay for it, I will be happy to act as a pickup point for the northwest and a distribution point for the south.

We dont seem to have any responses from anywhere else in the state at the moment.

I can arrange to get the lots from Devonport to Burnie, even if I take them myself as with my job I get to Burnie at least once a week.

As for getting the Hobart consignment down that way, I have asked the local couriers for a price on one box, once a month, from the Devonport depot to the Hobart depot. Still waiting on a response but they are saying positive things like the truck goes every day, shouldnt be much, etc etc...

This will mean someone from Hobart will need to act as the pickup point down there. Is there anyone in Hobart that is willing to collect a consignment from the freight depot in Hobart once a month and act as the pickup point for everyone else?

If anyone else has any ideas on how to get a consignment from Devonport to Hobart "on the cheap", please let us know.

This whole plan is still dependant on a few things -
    - Whether Andy is willing to use the courier I have in mind - their pickup policy might not meet in with his timing, so I will have a chat to Andy once I can confirm everything else "fits".

    - Whether the company allows me to use their freight so I can get the good rate (or if not, whether their "normal customer rate" is an affordable option).

    - Whether someone from Hobart can do the task down there.

I know I havent got a dollar amount on this option yet but Im getting there...

Input from anyone? Further ideas? How does this all sound?

Edit - Hobart address for initial collection will be Road Runners Transport Courier Distribution & Storage Services 19 Mornington Rd Mornington 7018, if the option is affordable.

    Re: (future) Tassie Pickup Point?

I have had confirmation I can get boxes sent from Devonport to Hobart (collect at depot) for $3 per box as long as the box is under 16 kgs.
So I can get up to 6 x 2.5Kg bags in a single box for $3 as long as someone is willing to collect it from Hobart and act as the distribution / pickup point down there.

I am still working on freight prices / arrangements from Melbourne to Devonport...

    Hi there.

I am still looking for someone that is prepared to travel to Mornington once a month and collect the box/es so they can act as a Hobart pickup point.
I can get it delivered to Hobart from Devonport as I mentioned, but this aspect of the delivery chain needs to be arranged before I can continue.

If anyone can act as the Hobart pickup point, please contact me.
The task would involve travelling to Mornington once a month and collecting box/es that I would send you. You (whoever it may be) would collect the box/es and advise Hobart based CSers when and where you would like them to meet you to get their beans. Details of who ordered what would be available (assuming the bags come labelled as mine have in the past).

    Whats in it for you?
    You get your beans first!
You get to meet Hobart CSers in person - a good social event, perhaps?
You get to choose when and where this would take place.

    Anyone?

Everytime we go overseas to Tasmania by ship..... we have to empty the car boot of all contraband deemed injurious to the locals: banas, apples, lettuce and all other fresh Victorian fruit and vegetables.

Could green coffee beans be in that catagory? Might be worth a check.

Green coffee beans must be okay - theyve been coming in for years now, and Aus post gets them through okay.
Its mainly about fresh produce due to our disease free status...

A funny story - I just finished walking the Overland track from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair... Including mountains and side trips we walked over 100km in 9 days. We met up with a couple of guys from Sydney, they came all prepared with their food, they carried fresh food from Sydney - they had their Broccoli all chopped up for each day in glad bags with one chilli in each bag.. Customs dog attacks their bag at the airport so they get pulled aside and their bags emptied...
    Imagine this...
The customs lady looking at a quantity of glad bags on the counter, each containing a quantity of neatly chopped broccoli and one whole chilli... picks one up, looks closely at it, turns to them and says
"We do have Broccoli in Tasmania, you know..."

Anyway back on point, coffee beans are okay otherwise the dog would have stopped the post by now.
    Cheers!

    RE (future) Tassie Pickup Point?

Nothing to do with beanbay I know, but since you mention Salamanca, ie Hobart, one of the most consistent places for coffee in Hobart I have found at that end of the state is in the mall called Boangles / Beaujangles... Unsure of spelling, but am sure about their coffee!
