Below is the email that was sent to your web site email address:

    Wow, 3000 members!
The 2000 member competition seems like only yesterday and now we have cracked the 3000 already. 4k is just around the corner and we should have something special to celebrate the 5000 mark next year.

    CS Calendar Pictures.
As we rocket through the year a quick reminder to get your digital camera out and snap some pictures of your CoffeeSnob life. Machine, roaster, bean stash, cups whatever strikes you as typically CoffeeSnob might make it into our 2008 calendar. Post your pictures in the thread: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1180240540

    Green beans for home roasters.
What would the monthly newsletter be without announcing the BeanBay green beans on offer? Mostly unread I would guess! This month we managed to snare a Cuban Altura and a great Mexican. We also have an semi-regular friend in the Monsooned Malabar and a great Brazil Yellow Bourbon base. Back for a revisit is the truly exceptional island treat from Puerto Rico, the Fairtrade PNG and some very small quantities of Timor Leste, Panama, and the Mocha Java Decaf.

    Cuban Altura $11.50/kg
    India Monsooned Malabar AA $8.50/kg
    Brazil Yellow Bourbon $8.50/kg
    Mexican Jaltenango HG $9.00/kg
    Kenya AA $9.50/kg
PNG Fairtrade Organic A Grade $9.00/kg
Puerto Rico Yauco Selecto $49.50/kg (1 kilo lots)
Timor Leste Arabica Grade 1 $8.50/kg
Panama Gran Del Val Bajo $9.50/kg
    Decaf - Mocha Java $13.00/kg

The BeanBay green bean sale will commence at 9:30pm Thursday 16th August (AEST) which should be late enough for the western CSrs to get to a computer after work too.

    Pre Roasted!
(Insert shameless self promotion warning here)
Please dont forget to tell your non-roasting, coffee drinking friends, family, businesses and colleagues about CoffeeSnobs Brown. We really do roast to order and aim to always deliver within a fortnight (often it is within a week). The freshness and quality is worth the extra wait.

    Enjoy your coffee!

Yes Modi, the really great thing about CSrs is that most of us make the transition from "newbie" to "active helper" at some point in time as you get comfortable with the roasting process and develop your own tricks of trade.

Lucinda, for a split second you made me think I typed the wrong date!

What was more confusing, is my email arrived on 16 August at 9:21 am. This was at midnight, so the email got there from nine and a half hours into the future.

    Talk about deja vu!

Bourbon? Shudder... think yellow berry variety not uncle Jack Daniels. ;)

The Yauco Selceto IS expensive but oh, so good when you nail the roast. I really think its a better cup than the Blue Mountain and not a lot more expensive than most retail beans. I grabbed some more for myself before putting in the BeanBay too.

So now it begs the question Andy, how big is your personal stash?

I think Ill stick with a Latin American focus this BeanBay. Always keen on Mexican, and the Cuban sounds very interesting.

Re: BeanBay Green - 16th August, 21:30 AEST.

    Hi all

Any advice appreciated. I wish to get 2 or 3 beans for my GeneCafe. Last time I got the Sulawesi Torajah Kalosi, and the Ethiopian Sidamo. The Sidamo was very nice but I think the Kalosi is a bit too acid or bright (I tried several roasts). I usually have an espresso and my wife adds a bit of milk. Im not really into blending yet as have yet to taste the nuances of individual beans
    on my untrained palate.

So I think from searching here that I should avoid the Kenyan (too acid), but I have little idea of some of the others. (I do like the Monsooned Malabar when I have bought already roasted beans). I see that a CS post says of the Brazil Yellow Bourbon "They are not your average bland Brazils...they provide a challenge in roasting as a SO .."

I dont yet have descriptions of them like what goes up on the Bean Bay when it opens. Thats prob what would help me a lot to work out what to get - and any advice from roasters. What would be nice SO ones that are like Sidamo or Malabar or be quite full bodies and smooth?

    Mike

    Speleomike,
I kind of agree with you on the Sulawesi. I have done a few roasts of it now and still havent found it enjoyable. Nice as a minor mixer with a Peru Segunda though.

Maybe try the PNG from this Beanbay. I havent tried this particular bean but the PNG Peaberry from a couple of beanbays back from really nice.

I wont be taking part this BeanBay. The Cuban looks interesting, but I need to get some Jewellery making supplies and I have a huge stockpile that I need to get down a bit.

It is nice to have the luxury of saying "I have too many beans" :D

Mike, I suggest you google a few of the names. if you like a "softer" coffee go for one of the South American or nearby beans.

TG: buying any beans this time round or will your recent acquisition do for this month?

Lucinda: "too many beans"?.....oooh, what you said.....shame on you!

I try not to count (for fear of heart failure) and the line is a little blury between CoffeeSnobs Brown stock and "my stuff" but I can say that I have been known to purchase a whole bag (60kg) of a single bean for myself... and later might share some it with others.

    8-)

The last 3 whole bags that I bought myself were the Harar Longberry, Mandheling and the Colombian Volcan Galeras.

    ;D

    :P

My new acquisition will probably take my stash to around 90kg (I need to do a proper count).

Still, the Cuban and Mexican sound interesting so I might buy a little for some variety.

Must be the FASTEST bean bay in history.

Refreshed the screen until the selection came up, and as soon as they did, some beans were ALREADY half gone.

Took the decaf seconds to disappear entirely.

We must have some super-fast coffesnobs here with super quick computers, able to click and order in a millisecond.

Re: BeanBay Green - 16th August, 21:30 AEST.

    Hi all
I did lots of Googling and looking at coffeereviews site and Sweet Marias site. Some of those beans dont have any reviews or very little info on them.
Anyhow I settled on Brazil Yellow Bourbon (maybe a base coffee), a Mexican Jaltenango which might go well with that at 60/40?, a PNG Fairtrade, and a India Monsooned as I know I like that.

Thats what I had worked out to get but once I had those in the bag I was tempted by the Cuban Altura so got that as well as a 2nd order.

I enjoyed the BeanBay, well done to Andy. Thanks.

Bugger Bugger Bugger, I got caught up preparing for Conference Next week I forgot all about BeanBay until my Wife reminded me 2 hours too late.

I missed out on a few items I wanted like the Mexican and Kenya AA.

I did manage to get the Cuban and Brazil Beans that I was after as well.

Oh well, If anyone from Perth wanted to swap I would be happy to swap Half a Bag of Brazil for a kilo of Mexican.

Talk about bloody good luck (and lots of it!) *Id *completely missed the email and Bean Bay posting and happened to log onto my computer for the first time in a couple of days at 7.40 this evening (AWST).

Managed to get the Monsoon Malabar and the Kenyan AA (but missed the Timor Leste by a smidgen).

Considering this is my second month of roasting, this next delivery will take me to over 20 kgs of green on hand (I simply cant bring myself to merely browse a Bean Bay!)

Phewww... just made it. No snoozing, just working late and forgot about the start time. Lucky the baby woke up to distract me from my work. There was a few tense minutes sitting in a dark room holding a baby sucking a bottle thinking, "will there be anything left on bean bay?" So I urged bubs to drink faster and I just managed to nab some Mexican and some Cuban. about an hour after the kick off.

...and I was intending to pass on this one.

I went nuts last night with Kenyan AA and the Monsoon Malabar, but I couldnt leave it there could I? *Noooooo.

After reading about the Puerto Rican, curiosity got the better of me. *Of course Andys description of it being as good as JMB, but half the price lead me to buying twice as much * ;D

Re: BeanBay Green - 16th August, 21:30 AEST.

Geez. Wasnt gonna get anything - bit short of funds this month.

Thought, Hey its three days after beanbay there wont be anything left. Ill just see what I missed out on...

So much for that idea. Saw there was some Yauco Selecto and Monsooned Malabar left. Couldnt resist. Bought the Monsooned Malabar and was REALLY tempted by the Yauco Selecto, but just managed to contain myself.

Havent counted my stash, but its starting to bulge out of its cupboard. Maybe I need a bigger cupboard...
