    Do you shake Bonsoy?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hi Coffeesnobs,

I am still crawling along in my coffee journey, and currently using soy milk due to the new babys allergies. :( I have tried a few Vitasoy varieties before hitting Bonsoy at last. I read Bonsoy was supposed to be most favoured by many coffee people but because of the cost, I gave other soy milk types a go first just in case I might like them enough. I shouldnt have bothered with the others. Bonsoy has better taste (no overly nutty mouthfeel) and textures so much finer, and easier. I am using only my old Mia and occasionally my stovetop La Sorrentina but I got nice, rolling and shiny microfoam with Bonsoy the very first time I used it. So Im another convert and a big fan of Bonsoy.

The problem with Bonsoy is that it doesnt come with plastic twist cap and youre supposed to cut one of the flaps on the carton to open it. It says to "shake well before opening" so I try but you cant really shake much before opening as theres no air in the carton. After opening, I try pinching the cut flap with fingers and folding down the flap before I shake the carton, but I get soy milk all over the place. If you use Bonsoy, do you shake it each time you use it? I get a little bit of sediment at the bottom when I am finishing a carton.

I wish Bonsoy came with a nice twist plastic cap like many UHT cartons do so I can shake it well, and close it against any food smell in the fridge.

Does anyone do anything to your Bonsoy carton to make it a little more user friendly?

Hello Snak, so Im not the only one with this problem! I have stopped using Bonsoy for the time being. Lifting out a nearly full carton can be a bit of a disaster if you bump it on the way out of the fridge or squeeze it a bit too much. I totally agree that its superior to the others, but Im back to Vitasoy Soy Milky now because I just dont have time for all the cleaning up.

One sealing solution that did work for me was to put a strong clothes peg over the corner of the carton, but only when the level has gone down enough to squeeze it together flat at the top corner.

OOOOOhhhhh 8-) Doc, those are exactly what I need! I assume you just break the carton top with the pointy end and insert? Would they stay in place pretty securely, say even when you shake the carton not too violently?

Would you mind telling me where I can find them, or what they are called? I did a quick google search and had a look around the auction site but I saw pourers for olive oil and spirits and nothing like the ones in your picture.

Bonsoy had free ones at the cafebiz expo in Melbourne the other month. So you could try the phone number on the carton, they might send you one free.

The other alternative is to get a nice glass bottle of the appropriate size and pour your Bonsoy into that for storage in the fridge.

Its amazing how easy a simple solution is to overlook, I think decanting is a much better idea.

it even gives the bonus of seeing the amount remaining

Good glass bottles to use for de-canting into are the 750ml style bottles of Cranberry and similar juices. They have a wide mouth and good sealing lid. I dont use them for milk, but do for other juices, and clean easily between fillings

Doc, I looked up the carton pourer and they seem to be on the elderly / mobility impaired care websites so they must be good for clumsy people like me too. But havent found places that have price yet, so Ill keep looking.

Trentski, thanks for the heads up about Bonsoy freebie possibility. I dont expect them to send out free ones but Ill contact them to see if they have or know of places I can get those pourers. I found Spiral Foods to be good with communication when I asked them a few questions about their wheat-free Tamari soy sauce in the past.

Decanting is an idea that never occurred to me :o. Yep the simplest things. Tall glass widemouth bottle with lid would be perfect for shaking, dishwasher, visibility etc too, as you say.

I will try out a few different ways and also if I find out anything positive from Spiral Foods I will let you know.

Thanks for the info so far!

I bought myself a 1L jug from Franklins about 6 months ago and havent looked back. Gone are the yellow milk stains at the bottom of the fridge door. Gone is the stress in my pre-coffee morning.

    Simple solution.

It also gives me peace of mind to have my soy milk staying in glass during the week its open.

I turn my unopened carton of Bonsoy on its' head before I open it and leave it for about 2 minutes. Then I shake it, and yes it doesn't shake much but I figure that it being upside down for awhile sort of does the trick.

I don't shake it once it is opened...obviously.
