    Vienna - anyone been recently?

Heading to Vienna next month and wondering if any CS'ers have been recently and have any tips for a typical Viennese coffee experience?

I haven't been there for years, so would be great to get any recent feedback.

    Hi Herzog

Visited January this year. Hope you get better than our zero centigrade.

There are plenty of the traditional cafes around the Innere Stadt area and most have seem to have maintained their authenticity despite the potential to be a tourist trap. One stand-out for us was the Cafe Central at Herrengasse 14

There are numerous Aida cafes around Vienna but one with a very nice vibe that we found was Prousek & Co. Chocolaterie & Grosskonditorei at Wollzeile 28 1010 just down behind St Stephans at Stephansplatz.

Hope this helps. Enjoy your stay.

    Hi Herzog

Also forgot to mention that the rooftop restaurant bar at the Sofitel on Taborstrabe just near the Schwedenbrucke bridge is well worth a visit for sunset if that is permitted during Summer. Fantastic almost 360 views. Cocktails, coffee and cake or dinner were all options when we were there but the sunset at later summer hours may bite into their dinner service.

The lower the better for me! They've had a cracking start to winter with abundant snowfall.

That sounds excellent, right near where we are based too.

Hey good question, and thanks for reminding me.

We went to Cafe Central, Cafe Demel, Cafe Hofburg and a couple of others.

Cafe Demel is one of the two places involved in the 100 year legal battle over the Sachertorte cake. A fascinating story https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sachertorte.

You can watch the bakers and pastry chefs at work as you have your coffee.

The cafes have a wonderful atmosphere, especially in winter when coffee and pastries taste even better.

Some non coffee things we also got around to, was a dinner at the Figlmuller, the restaurant that invented the Wienerschnitzel, and a visit to the Zuckerwerkstatt (sugar workshop) a shop where they make confectionary by hand while you watch. A detailed and complex craft.
