Media Player "whats the best out there"

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I have used MS Media Player since its birth way back from Win 95
I actually like how everything is laid out but this is the last straw
It breaks down all the time
I just want it to bloody work is that to much to ask
I have even updated my codecs

It all started when MP 11 came into existence

Recently I have been having problems with everything from cant play DVD and just today after an update it wont play music & it cant find my sound device
This has been an ongoing problem

Media Player has no more chances from this user

User Reviews of alternative programs wanted?
I want to know what is an equal or better alternative to MP and why you use it

Also if I choose an alternative & decide to keep it is it OK to delete Media Player from my computer ??

    Many Thanks in advance

    KK

I like WMP as well but I use the K-lite codec pack with windows media player classic. It installs the old style media player classic and more codecs than you could ever need as well as playing DVDs, well worth a look if you like the feel of Windows media player. I rarely find a file it cant play.

It is like having windows media player without the problems and on steriods!

KK - I wouldnt bother with this. Any new media player that you install will probably associate itself with all the media file types - so whenever you click on a media file, most likely, your new player will load, rather than Windows MP.

I suspect that Windows MP would resist being deleted from your machine anyway.

I have a few different ones on my machine - Im not really sold on any in particular. I use Quicktime, Media Player and WinAmp.

Im not certain that the issues you mention are the Media Player...or maybe something at the OS level. A new Media Player is worth a shot though...

Im not actually even sure its possible to uninstall WMP, its pretty deeply embedded in the OS. But capuchins right, installing another media player will probably mean that youre not bothered by WMP any more, as long as all the file associations are correct.
I use VLC myself, as it plays just about everything without having to isntall extra codecs and its cross-platform, and I switch between operating systems a lot, so consistency is good. But VLC has a lot of options and so is perhaps not as straightforwardly user friendly as it could be.
Id put in another vote for Media Player Classic - particularly if you have been happy using WMP.

I would strongly recommend VLC media player, it will play any media file you throw at it without having to download codecs...only drawback is that in its default layout it is [s]ugly[/s] but luckily there are heaps of sites that offer new skins to download! ;)

VLC or Winamp are the way to go, though iTunes isnt that bad either.

Do any of these players have advertisements
    I dont like them

Win Amp looks nice but the free version is not as good as the pro

VLC - will look into it

    I-Tunes looks nice

I have been told that KM Player is really good does anyone use it ??

    Hey KK,

VLC, fantastic little program with low overheads

Winamp, Great also, low overheads no advertising as far as i know

I tunes??????????????? are you serious!, one of the most invasive programs ive ever seen, i use it only because i have an iphone, cant stand what it does to ya music, i have all my music(80Gb) in folders, according to genre then artist, it changes it all, imports, you cant access the music through the normal folder structure you already have in place, and has like 40 Gb of unknown music???? what the,

KM player, i have also heard a few good things about this player, like no advertise, low overheads, good codec

    have fun

Would definitely recommend VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) as it will play anything you throw at it without having to worry about installing your own codecs (vlc has them built-in). small footprint re system resources as well. no frills interface is intuitive once u get used to it.

it is also updated very frequently in case u manage to find a bug (ive never come across any) or find something that it cannot do!

imho its reasonably straightforward to use (drag and drop onto it to play) but has got the options there for advanced users.

media player classic is my backup player because u can run it straight from a usb drive without having to install anything. very useful for presentations on other peoples computers!

im not a fan of itunes as a media player. i use it for music (w/ ipod) but when it comes to playing video its playback is very poor (and its def not my hardware - quad core cpu + 4gb ram). it also seems to get more bloated with every new version released from apple

like capuchin says, when u install any media player it will generally ask you if u want it to become your default media player and give u a choice (tick box) as to which file types u want it to be the default for. general rule is that each program will try to take over defaults for every file type it is able to play.

once you do this you can leave WMP there and it wont bother you.

WSully, yes I am serious about iTunes.
I used to think it kiilled my music too, but when I installed it (purely because of my new iPhone) it read all my music, and then left it alone. Everything that was on my PC pre-iTunes is still in its correct location, correctly named, and opens in Winamp if I manually open the music files.

I dont deny that older versions of it may have caused the problems you mentioned, but 8.2 didnt touch anything on my PC that I havent specifically let it.

Winamp for music; VLC for video. :)
