I need orthotics and use them in Brooks runners but find them too warm in summer. A good mate put me on to Birkenstock sandals for summer and they are so comfy I forget I have them on. :)

    Hi RHR,

Definitely Birkenstocks. The slides are great for summer.

If you look into the kitchens of restaraunts, you will see a heap of them.

    They are worth every cent!

Birkenstocks are usually available from their shops & online, usually find them in major shopping centres, some independant shoe shops have them (limited range). id recommend going to the actual shop for a fitting.

Birkenstocks are great and I would also recommend them
However I have very soft souls of the feet and find them to hard for my liking

I personally like and use for my work Doc Martens they are very comfortable and supportive
They also have souls that can handle heat & chemicals

    My wife uses Naot

My last pair were Trail boots from Aussie Disposals. Good support and plenty of padding around the sole for standing in one small location for a length of time, plus some thermal type lining on the tongue that removes heat. They are also strong enough to survive having anything up to 5kg dropped onto them without inconveniencing me (certain fellow staff members made that a mandatory :P )

Although Im now looking into Birkenstock....

We have to wear fully enclosed shoes in our business, were not allowed sandals.

I wear and love Skechers which I also have to be able to put my orthotics in, seeing as I have cronic flat feet. I was getting my Skechers from the factory outlet in Mascot, Sydney for about 25 bucks a pair but now theyve moved out to Homebush and theyve increased to about 80 bucks a pair. I now find it cheaper to buy my shoes direct from the US. I usually get the Skechers sneakers for work.

I just had these shipped in from the US...not sure if Im going to wear them to work yet though. *;)

I think the supportive insole of the Birks has to be better for long term health...

If in doubt ask a bartender!

In my uni days, I worked behind the bar, frequently doing 10 hour shifts on my feet, sometimes until 3am.

Footwear is a real issue in this scenario, and I found that a well worn-in pair of Doc Martens was hard to beat.

Things like birkenstocks are ok for short stints in summer, but they dont support or compress the foot like an enclosed shoe. Some compression of the foot is very important for the longer shifts - keeps the circlculation up and prevents blood pooling in your feet.

Dont know about anyone else but i wear black formal hush puppies with a soft sole which is suppose to protect from feet fatigue. I have to say they are quite good. Comfortable to wear while working all day and look very formal as well. :D

Birkenstock make a slightly cheaper version designed specifically for hospitality folks like up called "Birkies". I think they only come in black though?

I purchased mine from a local kitchen type place for around $140 i think?

Anyway...worth every penny and they have never given me any trouble at all. Nearly a year old and still as comfy as the day i got them.

I know chefs who swear by their Birkenstock clogs. Ive always worn steel cap boots, mainly because clogs are useless when hosing down the kitchen floor at the end of the night. Maybe in your case a fatigue mat might be a better option.

as far as I know Birkies only come in black btw.
