    Machine repair

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Does anyone know what the requirements are for becoming an espresso machine repairer? There arent any TAFE courses that are specifically about EMs they are all about general domestic appliance servicing. I think some companies do free training but you have to work for them full time and I cant so Id rather pay to get the training.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

    Re: Machine repair

I think most people undertaking repair work would have either learned "on the job" working for a firm undertaking this work - or from a general equipment repair course....

Bearing in mind the skills needed are electrical (heaters, motors, pumps, solenoids), electronic (control systems) and plumbing (valves, fittings etc)... The knowledge required is very broad and the number of people in the field relatively small.... so there would be little or no requirement for a specific course (at say a TAFE).

Sammika, with respect, I think if you need to be trained to repair EMs, then you really do need to work for someone before setting out on your own. I think you would need to become familiar with a variety of machines, be able to trouble shoot by drawing on your previous experience, and of course have a pretty diverse kit of equipment and parts available.

Maybe you might only need to do it for a short time (?), but without serving an "apprenticeship" of some sort....even Michaelangelo went to art school and worked for other people! ;)

Sorry I should clarify, I am already an appliance repairer but want to get specific training for espresso machines because I know how tricky the componantry can be especially because it can differ hugely from brand to brand and have been told that you need specific training.

    Re: Machine repair

    Sammika,

I know a few people who really know coffeemachines (and also repair them as a business).... The best is a person Ive christened " The Godfather" of La Cimbali over here in Perth....

He was trained in the La Cimbali factory in Italy.... and has passed on his skills and knowledge to others who work at that firm (He is a consultant in effect - and a really helpful person)..... The others who work at the firm have learnt about these machines from him..... and Im sure there are equivalent "Godfathers" for the other major brands.... a few of which this particular firm repairs/tunes.

So I really think the way to get into the industry is to be in the industry.... and learn "on the job" from these experts.....

Getting back to Grendels comment earlier-

The reason the bill is $200 is the repair actually costs $1 but knowing how to effect the repair costs $199....... and getting that knowledge is the hard part..... trial and error not being possible on a customers machine.
