Is GST chargeable on raw coffee I was trying to source some and some say they include 10% tax in the price, I thought coffee beans were gst free? or am I wrong?

No the retailer should not charge it for the beans - only on postage.

You might like to let them know Sullo - I wouldnt be surprised if they are collecting GST and passing it on to our beloved govt. in good faith.

Roasted coffee doesnt attract GST either. It is still considered a raw food product.

    Close...
GST on wet coffee only as far as I can tell.

Green, roasted, ground are all GST free, its only when you wet it with water or milk (ie: Big M) that is becomes taxable. (unless you chocolate coat it)

    [hr]

According to the ATO the following ate GST free...

milk, tea, coffee, fruit and vegetable juices (with 90% minimum by volume of juice)

Tea, coffee etc (does not include beverages marketed in a ready-to-drink form)

Tea (including herbal tea, fruit tea, ginseng tea and other similar beverage preparations), coffee and coffee essence, chicory and chicory essence, and malt.

    The ATO also quote:

    Coffee (powdered) and coffee essence
    GST-free

    Coffee beans, chocolate coated
    Taxable

Coffee beans (including green coffee beans)
    GST-free

    Coffee, prepared or hot
    Taxable

...and it gets weirder the deeper you go:

    12. A coffee mug is sold with a jar of coffee. The coffee mug is additional to the coffee and its
packaging. The supply is a mixed supply. The supply of the coffee mug is taxable whereas the
supply of the coffee and jar is GST-free. The total price must be apportioned between the GST-free
and taxable components to calculate the amount of GST.

So I assume that if you put the coffee beans into the mug and sealed it then it would be GST free again?

    ;D

    thanks for the quotes Andy
I wonder why this dude charges for GST then? Each to their own I spose but if that vendor is giving money to ATO wouldnt that appear on their radar as an overpayment, although I cant see them wanting to give back so easily!

While I agree you are more likely to be right than I, I prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt. Im only 53...thats way too young to be cynical. Besides, cynicism is unhealthy....

Wasnt gst introduced so that we could end up paying less tax? And wasnt income tax introduced in AU as a temporary measure due to war?

Its simpler than that with my patented* "Buy my coffee & get a mug free" promotion... 100% now apportioned to the GST free item.

    *patent may not actually exist
