    Wheres the fun gone???

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
OK, so it appears that this is the appropriate place to discuss general things so here goes.

Im a big fan of CS and have learned heaps, bought heaps and meet some really cool people.

But my recent experiences have been less than fun with what i would consider some over zealous moderating in the For Sale forum.

Now I understand the rules (especially now they have been updated and clarified) and I DO respect them and I DO realise its good to stay on topic but JEEEEEEEEZ! *...a bit of friendly banter in a thread and a friendly reminder from a moderator appears to cut it out.

Yes... if a thread is getting too off topic and a bit outa hand then sure, bring it back but to be told off after one post!!! *

In MY opinion, as a big fan of CS (and someone that would love to keep visiting)... it would be worth lightning up a bit and letting there be some fun had (even if it is a little off topic from time to time)

The example i give is this:
    ***
Seller: Im not too crazy about selling this equipment hence the higher price.
Me: did the wife find out you bought it mate? ;)
    Seller:More like my momma! *
She found my toys under my bed! :o
    now back to topic.... :D
Mod:A request to all that for sales posts be kept on topic. If you are not interested in purchasing the item, you can discuss similar equipment within other threads.
PM the seller if youre interested in a purchase...
    ***

Id love to keep frequenting this forum (more than once a day at the moment...) but if this is the way its going to be then :( id be sad
I would have thought that a bit of banter keeps the topics alive...

What are other peoples thoughts on this? *

Im not pretending that this site is a democracy (Andy is the democracy!) but I thought it would be good to have this discussion.

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Im all for fun menace - hell, my name is Dennis! I think that Andy and the Mods may have even created the off topic section for people like me!

The longer Ive been a member here, the more I agree with the policies. Sometimes remarks that are off topic (and Im still guilty of that from time to time) can really confuse the flow of a topic. I think the Mods are very tolerant, and only draw people back to the topic at hand, if the topic goes off topic, for too long or in a big way.

When it comes to the for sale threads, were very lucky to have a freely available service that, lets face it, has better results than any paid ad you could put anywhere else. If you paid for an ad would you be happy if someone graffitid it? I dont think so.

I did read your post in that particular for sale thread, and yes, I thought it was funny. However, I also thought the seller could easily take offense at the remarks - it wouldnt be hard to do.

Its easier to have a rule for everyone and stick to it. That to me, seems much more fair than letting one thing slide and clamping down on another.

The off topic section allows us to pretty much speak on any topic we desire. I think we should keep it that way.

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

My take on this particular event,..for what it is worth *::)

I noticed there had been quite a number for sale threads going off topic in recent weeks and each time this happened, mods reminded everyone to keep these threads on topic. Sometimes moving off topic posts (natural flows of conversation as happens face to face) to more appropriate areas of CS.

Remember, this is just my take on it,..but it seemed (to me) that thread (not just your post)was possibly moded early because of the recent number of other off topic posts in these threads,.. and possibly also because your post brought out a response from the seller that was very funny and as a consequence, actually invited responses to it like bait to a school of piranha,I had a laugh....and so then had the potential to go off topic for many posts to follow despite the seller saying now back on topic :D . *I think the mod saw that and put out the flame early is all. *

And I totally agree that topics should be kept on topic... my thoughts are that its a tad extreme at the moment.

Going off topic slightly is a fact of life and stomping on this really puts a dampener on things

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Yeah, I guess Ive not been a member for that long, reletive to some others, but Ive joined some threads, mid thread and seen some of the topics that have gone way off the original topic in such a short time, say, within an hour. Its easy for that to happen, and totally understandable. I guess its even more sensitive within the "For sale" section because thats what its for. And the other threads for comments on other machines, including those which are going for sale. I think the mods have to keep things on a tight reign, otherwise forums like these get outta control and its a logistical nightmare trying to navigate or find previous topics when doing a search.

I guess my main point is that the "For Sale" section is one topic that really needs a tighter reign than some of the others. Ive noticed lately that a lot of the For Sale threads have been hijacked or gone OT, with a mod to step in... maybe you got made an example or something haha

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Regarding keeping everything strickly on topic (except for the Off Topic area).. I have found generally when forums try to keep a very tight reign on that (and I dont think they do that here btw,.. I think CS has found a happy balance) conversation can at times be stifled and actually overall the forum IMO will develop a sense of a less friendly and very serious environment,.. which could be perfect for some forums depending on what they are about.

If I can use a parallel,.. say there were a whole bunch of CSrs at a get-together, and I was standing in a group where we were discussing erm,..I dunno.. a coffee machine in the $500 to $1000 range ::),... and something that somebody said,.. reminded me of a funny thing that happened on the way to the get-together,.to do with the machine but was really quite off topic,... but I had to step away from that conversation with that group and go stand in the corner of the room by myself and say it to the wall, hoping someone will eventually come along and join me for a laugh.

That is kind of what it would be like if this forum was strictly moderated to keep things on topic all the time. Disjointed,..a very unnatural way to communicate and completely stopping the natural flow of conversation wouldnt be good for any community. I dont believe CS mods do that in any extreme sense thank goodness.

I personally think that you can get a feel about whether a topic has run its race,.. and letting the conversation flow naturally after it has.. is great and makes it also a fun and friendly forum.

4700 members, 100,000 posts and very, very few rules because for the most part we trust each other to ensure the forum remains usable.

Of course, the inverse of your problem is the seller who contacts us saying "someone hijacked my for sale thread, can you do something about it?"

We have an amazing resource here, and a community of people having a lot of fun with a great hobby. I doubt there are many people on the site that havnt learnt something from, or shared something with, people that they may never meet.

The fun is most certainly still here, you might just need to lay-back, relax a little and appreciate the good bits.

Oh, BTW, as hard as we try sometimes we manage to make a bad call... we all do them and sadly thats human nature. With anyluck those bad calls are few and far between.
    :)

    Punchline (as always) is,

    Enjoy!

thanks 4 taking the time Andy -

    I know... I know...
I agree with everything everyone has said.

Just wanted to air my concern and its great that so many have responded
I was just feeling a little put off and didnt want this to become the way things are round here.
I am used to forum posting (mainly computer related) so am familiar with the way they all work and my experience is that CS is certainly more strict then any other ive come across. It seems this will take a bit of getting used to.

For the amount of discussion of a subject which we are all passionate about, the art of espresso and all things coffee related CS is a wonderful resource and has enhanced and nurtured my understanding of this complex subject.
I can put up with the occasional foible along the way in my search for coffee knowledge.
Keep up the good work CSers............................................. .

Yep this is a great site !
I posted a question on HB and when I checked the reply I found 2 pages of off topic (in fact some quite nasty) comments on the whys and wherefores of taste vs looks etc. This had literally nothing to do with my question. It was basically a couple of members having a go at each other. The question I asked was only addressed by one comment that was 2 questions.
My point: "This site is far more freindly than others and alot more tolerant to newbies and in my case probably the odd dumb question !"

    Cheers CS people !!!

I also love helping others and CoffeeSnobs gives me the opportunity to do both. Couldnt be better as far as Im concerned 8-) [smiley=thumbsup.gif],

I am going to go against the grain and say this place is immensely overmoderated, IMHO it borders more on content editing than moderation and makes me not want to post anything cause I get the vibe anything not within the rules (including pic size) will get jumped on

but thats the rules and I abide by them by choosing to not post much, just how the internet is when you are browsing with somebody elses money

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Well, Im going to stick my second crack in here...

IMHO...this site is by far NOT overmoderated.

I moderate on TWO other sites. I participate on six forums frequently.

There are other forums that could use MORE moderation, IMHO.

I am yet to see any of our mods here actually change peoples posts apart from resizing pictures. None of us change what people say...and I WILL stand corrected if you can find me such a post.

Some of you know what goes on behind the scenes of running such a huge forum. Others dont and hence Andys plea recently for some of you to take a decaf and chill...

If you think that moderators participating in conversations is "over moderating" well, theres nothing I can say or do to change your opinion on that.

However, I have been to a forum where I found that there was not enough moderation and the attitude towards a lot of people, especially females was enough to drive me away. The language was just disgusting, IMO, which is incredible considering weve supposedly got over intolerance towards others... ::) The best power I held in that situation was that I could choose to LEAVE. Which I did!

As a moderator, I will stand on Andy and the teams side. Sorry but that is what loyalty is about to me.

In regards to fun...go to Off Topic. We have LOTS of fun there...(Think the Canberra thread...now that was funny!! ;D )

And in regards to moderating, if this thread continues down the path of "bagging out CS and the moderators"...well, I think you all know what is likely to happen...

So, please, play nice. We dont get paid to look after you children... :P :-*

I moderate a forum and think this one is moderated well.
As Andy said, a bad call can sometimes be made but rarely here I think.

The new Off Topic section should go a long way to venting the need to talk about other things occasionally.

Some things do need more strict policing and I believe the For Sale section is one of them.

I have one section on my site that is very strictly contolled.
Its a record section and I dont allow any editorial whatsoever.
The rest of my forum though is very relaxed and self regulating just like this one.

    Really? :-?

    Youve not been censored.

    Youve been allowed your opinions.

Your take on things has been addressed by a mod.

Youve not been banned from here.

Welcome to the bloody difficulties of enforcing a democratic atmosphere within the free-post nature of a forum ... & what a mod has to deal with.

Its not tyranny, just pragmatism - making a site of almost 5000 members (not necessarily active all at once) workable needs mods mate!

Ill go against your grain, & say this site is moderately moderated compared to other fascist sites.

    ;)

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Ive been posting on forums for 9.5yrs and have been a moderator on one of them (a US forum) for quite a few years now(joined that one in 2000) which currently has 9766 Members and 302,732 posts. Apart from the forum I help moderate,.. this forum is the only other forum I have come across and enjoy so much because IMO it is pretty layed back compared to most of the forums Ive visited over the years. Some forums are so unfriendly they have sub-forums that you cannot even access (you can see all the headings but nup..cant read the information in there because someone has decided the information in those areas cannot be shared to lurkers and other minimal posting folk.. you have to earn the right by contributing first.

Knowing what its like behind the scenes and what it takes to run and moderate a forum, I can say with confidence that CS staff (most/all? of them volunteering their time for free lets not forget)have got the moderation balance right IMO. **None of them are robotic androids as far as I know (though android...andy..there could....nar) so Id be surpised if there wasnt the occasional bad call or three.

Oh and as far as the behaviour of the CS membership... it is outstanding IMO. *I have helped put out some massive fires in the forum I help moderate over the years (while for the most part it is an awesome friendly envronment),.. but there have been people joining just to come in to create conflict for the fun of it and one or two trouble makers who are fine most of the time,.. but occasionally love a good argument and its usually no surprise to the mods,. who was the member that lit the fuse. Things have gotten really nasty, personal and heated at times on that forum, but so far I havent seen anything that even comes close to that here. Not that I have been here that long in the scheme of things to be able to know for sure whether it happens here or not.

Snap! same here. This forum and the other one that I help moderate are the only two that I visit regularly now. The one I help moderate, these days I visit not as much as I used to,..or should perhaps since I discovered CS......CS has stolen my attention a bit :D)

Of course I always head off to geeky computer forums the minute I need to resolve an issue,.. but Id never visit these type of forums everyday for example.

Jeez... I hope you were kidding with that -

    1) I thought my comments were more thought provoking than "CS /Mod bagging"!!
    2) if you are planning on deleting posts in this thread... welcome all to CS 1.1 (the communist version) where all posts are censored to reflect the thoughts of the Mods!! :P

Seriously... this wasnt meant to turn into a slanging match. I was just just a little disappointed at what I thought was some over zealous moderating - which Im more than happy to see as the exception rather than the rule!

    Fair enough Menace....

The problem is though, you always end up opening the gate for people that have a more polarised view of what "should" be done, according to them and no matter what the original intentions may have been its usually not long before some of these views get posted and the temperature in the thread starts to rise.

Everyones entitled to their own point of view and opinion of course, we dont all live each others lives so its both natural and invigorating to become engrossed in discussions that eke out someone elses inner most thoughts. Its even better when all the participants do their best to put themselves in each others shoes, at least for a little while, as this is then likely to generate a much more interesting discussion from which we can all walk away from, hopefully with some increased level of enlightenment. Its an aim worth striving for I think but difficult to manage....

    Cheers,

Sheeze Sunbeamer, its not an attack on you, pic size is a real issue for those on small bandwidth connections. We have plenty of members who are happy using the site on a dial-up modem (and so they should). Those same members dont get much love on you-tube or sites with huge shockwave/flash multi-media menus but can browse around CS without grief.

Large images can be linked to an off-site service or attached to a post as a downloadable ZIP file. Then people have the choice.

We could assume that everyone lives in the city and has a $100 per month "fat internet" connection or we can keep the sizes of images at a reasonable level so they work for all.

    I like the later.

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

    I rest my case :)

you will note I posted my opinion and then went on to say but thats the way this site is run and I chose to adhere to these rules by sitting back and watching rather than posting (not that I know much to add anything useful) and proceeded to get jumped on by everyone :P

Im not going against the rules at any time

Im not jumping up and down and saying this is how it should be run

Im not saying well I own a forum and we assume all our members are adults and know when they are passing the line and let them self moderate (though when somebody does go to far and makes it personal they get jumped on pretty quick)

I only stated my opinion as does everyone else on a forum, how many people may be out there agreeing but dont say so?

I dont think this is CS bagging, just presenting 1 persons opinion, theres nothing wrong with thinking different to others, imagine a forum like that, 1 person posts then 200 replies of Yes, I agree

re the pic size, Andy I agree that 2mb 3000pix wide are a bit silly but I am sure most people are browsing on screens 1024 or wider and cope with a bigger that 640 pic size, even 800 can be small still

Its deja vu all over again.

    Andy, you need sleep.

    FWIW, I like the forum.
I believe it is very much in the lightly moderated category.
There is hardly any flaming, which is a true rarity.
There is sometimes a tendancy to ignore the request for a cheap recommendation, but that is often the voice of experience and the wallet of emptiness attempting to help others avoid mistakes of our past.

I only stated my opinion as does everyone else on a forum, how many people may be out there agreeing but dont say so?
Dunno. How many people may be out there disagreeing and not saying so?

Andy slow down I am not disagreeing with you

all I said was I dont think somebody posting a screen quality pic thats 800 pixels across should get it squashed down to 640, I am sure there are as many users with not the best eyesight as there are strangled by dialup that would prefer to not squint

Im not losing sleep over any of and I dont see any of it as an attack, suprised by how many people think I do though :)

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Ive noticed over quite a few years of forum participations that text based communication is notoriously easy to be misunderstood. In fact, I actually appreciate the smiley faces just so I can get a sense of the emotion or attitude behind the statement - tongue sticking out = cheeky statement?; flatline mouth = concerned, but not totally upset yet, etc. (maybe Ive interpreted these wrong too??)

Anyway, my point is that I think CS and CS mods and members generally make a big effort, either consciously or sub-consciously, to be clear about what they are trying to communicate, both in terms of content and manner, though of course, this is impossible to do perfectly. During times when things are perceived (rightly or wrongly) to be going out of hand, I think it is fair enough that the mods come out and take action, even if it is seen to be on the conservative side (I tried to find the most neutral term, and conservative might not cut it as one).

I seem to be writing essays for a living at the moment, and more and more I am begining to really appreciate both the wonders and the difficulties of written communication. I also do a few book reviews and assessments of different view points and I have found that one needs to be a gracious reader. I think the same goes with forums. In laymans terms, I reckon someones suggestion to take a chill pill to be just the tonic for forum reading and posting! In terms of one specific thing Ive noticed: some people seem to feel attacked when their comments/suggestions are disagreed with or corrected, and often they respond with escalating indignation and defensiveness. I wonder if it would be helpful if we didnt take things so personally?

There are all sorts of people here, with different viewpoints and different ways of expressing them. Every community needs boundaries and I am glad that we have the CS mods to establish and maintain those boundaries. I know they dont do so as legalistic policers and they do a darn good job, recognising however, that they will not always make the best decisions by everyone and even by themselves sometimes.

Anyway, Im not directing this at anyone in particular, merely expressing some thoughts related to the issue at hand. Hope thats ok with everyone... :P

Last thing: I love this forum (warts and all) and its by far the most friendly one Ive ever been on!

    Re: Wheres the fun gone???

Heres my two cents thrown into the kitty.

Ive been admining/moderating forums such as this since long before the world wide web exploded onto the scene in the early 90s. In my experience all the way from the days of BBSs right up to the present day unmoderated forums simply dont work.

While wed like to think that everyone is an adult and capable of self-moderation the reality is that such is not the case. While most people will behave in a responsible adult manner respecting the other users, not everyone does. And there-in lies the rub.

It only takes a few obnoxious users to ruin a forum for everybody. With-out moderation a few bad apples posting their drivel soon chase away the good users and the site either dies or becomes nothing but a forum for these immature twits to post their personal attacks and ventings on. I have seen more forums than I care to count destroyed due to this type of immature behavior.

We have had our share of these types of people over the years here at CS, but because this is a forum moderated by people who deeply care not only about coffee but about the CS community as a whole the immature twits were quickly seen and dealt with. And by dealt with I dont mean their account was locked out/deleted. They were talked too by a Mod and the problems with their posts pointed out to them and they were asked to please refrain from such behavior in the future. In almost every case that was all that was needed. Had a Mod not stepped in though these few immature little twits would quickly have driven many good users away.

When I first joined CS there were less than 200 members. Look at us now. Less than three and a half years later we have almost 5,000 registered members, and if we stay on the same growth curve that weve been on for the last 3 years we will have 10,000 members in just over a year. We must be doing something right! In all that time, and with the thousands of members that we have, there has been less than a handful of users (not including spammers) locked out/deleted.

Our rules are minimal and simple. Short of an unauthorized commercial post or a personal attack censorship is non-existent here. Posts may be moved so that they are in an appropriate area and over sized pictures may be reduced so-as to provide the best viewing experience for as many users as possible. This hardly qualifies as censorship. Free speech is alive and well here in CS land. Long may it reign!

If you doubt this simply take a look at the posts in this and many other threads where someone posts an unpopular opinion with the statement now watch my post be deleted. Guess what? The posts are still there. Actions speak louder than words, and the actions of the Admin/Mod team clearly show they have the utmost respect for freedom of expression. All we ask is that you do it in the appropriate forum and with-out personal attacks.

And now I must be tottering off to bed as its 2am here and I have to be at the SCAA Conference in 6 hours for a round of seminars!

A couple of days, a few pages of venting and I think this thread has run its run.

Im going to lock the thread, not for censorship reasons, just for sanity ones. (feel free to start a new thread if you think its required)

I think we should get back to coffee, and having "fun"
    :)

...its the real reason we are all here after all.
