How Many Is Too Many Coffees?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hey CoffeeSnobs.
Does anyone know if theres an official guide to how many coffees is safe per day? A government health guideline perhaps?
Obviously this is harder to measure than something like alcohol as coffees can vary in strength (a lot).
I sometimes have five espressos in a morning if theyre coming out particularly well and im doing an afternoon shift. On the drive to work i feel a little shaky, not in a bad way. Im not going to give myself a stroke or anything am i?
    Any doctors in the house?
    Thanks
    CGR.

Re: How Many Is Too Many Coffees?

I think, like alcohol, it differs according to the person. I get a bit antsy if I have more than two per day but Ive never been a a heavy coffee drinker.

The benchmark level Ive seen is up to 300mg caffeine per day is safe but another study suggests 200mg. An instant coffee is around 80mg. An espresso around [s]150[/s] the same but that obviously depends on how strong you make it

The suggestion is that high caffeine consumption is not advised with heart or high blood pressure problems. I guess because of the heart rate increase. I doubt you would give yourself a stroke but if there is a pre-existing danger such as constricted arteries, high cholesterol, then limiting coffee intake is a good idea.

Heres one link: http://nutrition.about.com/od/askyournutritionist/f/caffeine.htm but there wasd an earlier thread in CS about health benefits of coffee.

    PS Im no doctor.

Re: How Many Is Too Many Coffees?

Before getting my machine I wouldve said 4 per day isnt too excessive. Now I have the machine ready to rock at any time Ive revised that up considerably...and theyre all doubles... ::) As I said to the wife, "you expect me to deny myself when such outstanding goodness is only 90 seconds way? Outrage!"

If it helps, I always suffered headaches - severe headaches - late afternoon after a round of golf. I thought it was my eyes and went via a doctor to an eye specialist. After testing he asked me about my caffeine intake. At the time it was minimum 3 coffees per day + maybe 2 cans of coke. Both the doctor and the eye specialist felt that was NOT excessive. However, they attributed the headaches to rushing to golf WITHOUT the morning coffee and a combination of 4ish hours on course without caffeine made worse by some dehydration. Their prescription? Have my coffee before play and carry a 600ml bottle of coke to sip on throughout the game. Ive never suffered a headache after golf since!

So you tune your body to "needing" caffeine, but it can take a fair bit before the medicos consider it excessive.

I think youll find that, in general, espresso, even more so ristrettos, have less caffeine than instant. I think from memory, robusta has way more caffeine than arabica. So If you have a blend of espresso that has robusta in the mix, then more caffeine. Instant is predominantly robusta and nasty at that.

And then again, if you let the espresso run long and get that bitter blonding action happening too, that upps the caffeine levels.

Theres a few threads on this from memory.

Ahhh, thanks for that YeeZa. Being a total newb and frankly enjoying the experimentation with my machine and taste buds I have found at times that allowing the shot to run on for a travel mug of flat white adds bite and punch - in a good way for me - to the coffee. Your explanation would also answer why I find them more of a buzz than "normal" as well. Interesting.

On serious note...there are a range of conditions where you should avoid/limit caffeine intake. From memory, one of them is glaucoma.

Also from fluid intake, I read somewhere that it is recommended to drink more water to make up for the diuretic inducing coffee.

Exactly! Its just so damn NICE.
Thanks for all the feedback. And Wrecker, your intake makes me not feel the need to worry about mine. Thanks. Also, if the doctor says its okay, who am i to argue. Im turning the machine back on right now. (Gotta love the 6910: 3mins warm-up and ready to go. Just wish i could get the damn thing to microfoam!)

    Thanks again all.

I agree.. It is only 90sec away and I can have it at home and in public... Nothing else comes close.. Sorry Wife :-)

microfoam is easy on the 6910... Type of milk (phycal) and a different method to full cream and works well for me.

Re: How Many Is Too Many Coffees?

Greetings all, My 2 cents worth.

I have been working in the Health & Fitness industry for 25 + years and have spent some time studying, Heart disease, Blood pressure, Cholesterol, Pres drugs, vitamins the whole deal.

As has been stated here already, there are many variables, the 3 most obvious ones being....

    1) Caffeine content (very hard to generalize) 80mg through to 150mg is the norm for most coffee drinks (snobs being the obvious exception of course)
    2) Individual tolerance level
    3) Any personal health conditions eg: Hypertension, Erratic pulse rate, Coronary Disease etc

Providing you are not over sensitive to caffeine (strange forum to belong to if you are), have no underlying health issues, then my opinion is the daily 400mg to 600mg per day school of recommendation (2-3 double shots) Roughly ;)

With regard to headaches these are probably better fixed with a Panadol or 2 rather than 7 teaspoons of instant ;D

I have had the misfortune of doing a caffeine fast and for me it was 7 days of headaches, the average is 3 days of pain until the brain returns to its non caffeinated state, but hey we are Snobs and we just shouldnt go there.

    Hope this helps, Cheers, CB

many many years ago, when giving up smoking, i decided to have a double espresso every time i wanted a cigarette.

18 doubles and 9 hours later, it really didnt seem like such a good idea.

Twitches, minor palpitations and a big case of the irrates.

    :D

These days i average 3 doubles a day.

4 doubles in 4 hours is too much. I am taking a nap for lunch.

    Phycal? Method?
Physical the health Milk, so my Wife states...

Method... We use two methods... One where the tip is only just submerged to get the milk moving and then towards the end, it is submerged deeper to get the temp up Vs Submerged first and slowly bringing the tip up as the milk starts to expand etc.. If memory serves me right the second method and Physcial milk gives easy micro foam.. Problem is that I do not always pay attention as I am more interested in getting a coffee into me :-)

The trick is the amount of milk and how deep you submerge the tip... NOTE: I can also not remember what my steam settings are and I would suggest that this can also have an impact as to wetness etc etc.

Im sure Ive read that an arabica espresso is around 40mg/shot (less for a ristretto), whilst instant is about 100mg/cup.

I remember being surprised because safe caffeine consumption would allow one to drink about 10 shots a day!

When youre pregnant moderate intake is considered around 300mg/day - which is still 8 shots!

You can read 5 different articles and 3 or 4 different opinions. Check this link which suggests a double shot is 50mg : http://www.wholelattelove.com/articles/coffee_information.cfm and finishes with Out of all the studies done there has been no evidence that serious health problems come as a result of drinking coffee or having caffeine in your diet. It is recommended that your caffeine intake is no more than 300mg per day
Well I dont think anyone will keel over here from caffeine OD although one site sponsor uses the "2muchcoffeeman" nick and I wonder how he knows * :)

I think we also get a lot of enjoyment out of Coffee Snobbery and the fruits of our pursuit - everyone needs a past-time

Re: How Many Is Too Many Coffees?

10 studies and 10 different results probably !

A couple of points of interest from yet further studies......

    a) To get the full effect from caffeine, you first have to have no caffeine in your system, suggested detox time 24-48 hours (yeah right)
    b) Due to the half life of caffeine (4 hours full-then-50% active 4 hours later) you cannot get full REM sleep if drinking coffee within 8 hours of kip time.

I must confess I do try to get the last shots in before 3pm.

    Cheers CB

Im similar to Redzone in that i try to get my last coffees in before 4or5pm on a weekday, unless im going out somewhere and dont want to get sleepy. In which case i relish the opportunity to have a couple of extra ones. Oh, and also if im about to go to the gym ill have a coffee, regardless of the time. Any excuse.

after discovering the espresso goodness my san marino can make I took 5 double shots of Panama Corsa the first morning I made coffee with the new machine. The 40 min drive to work was exciting and scary at the same time. I only do 4 doubles nowdays and a mug of plunger at lunchtime.

glad to see Im not alone...
