    Google Chrome

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight

Anyone installed Google Chrome Beta yet?
I just did and this post is from the Snobbery (in between roasts) using it.

Looks like a great browser, small, light and very little junk clutter around the web site that you are viewing (eg: none of the big fat tool-bars that some other browsers have)

I also noticed that it is watching what I type as it underlined eg: (doing a spell check on the fly) which is cute.

...and it works with BeanBay which is why I downloaded it!

Did u see the article on news.com.au?

Sounds a bit glitchy :) and does not even work on some google apps which must be embarrassing. At least it works on coffeesnobs :)

    Re: Google Chrome

I downloaded it last night just to give it a try

However so far I dont like the bookmark bar it has to be activated or turned off. I would rather a button

To early to tell if I will jump ship from explorer

I have to say, have moved to Firefox away from IE on my PC and away from Safari on my Mac. I have not looked back. Would not move to a new browser until it is available under general release.

It is interesting to see that google actually funds mozilla.

    Re: Google Chrome

Yeah installed it this morning. Seems pretty slick, very Firefox-3-ey in terms of the performance and great work in maximising viewport size. Seems to combine the best of IE7 (layout) and FF3 (performance). Some of the CSS implementation doesnt seem quite right yet, and like Google Desktop it seems to like building indexes, slowing down the PC and thrashing the hard drive if you let it sit idle for a bit which is why I closed it (and am just about to do so again!). But not bad for a first cut!

Ive only recently started using Firefox 3 and have been pleasantly surprised with its functionality and ease of use. Less hassles than Outlook.
I will wait for more feedback on Chrome.......................

Internet Explorer 8 is out as a second beta as well

    http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/5978053.html

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/beta/default.aspx

Im a dedicated FF user but there are still things that IE7 does better (e.g. different tab views)

Others rave about Opera but Ive never tried it.

    Re: Google Chrome

I use IE 7 mostly as its still has 50% of the CoffeeSnob market (see image below for CoffeeSnobs browser usage this year)

We do try most browsers to make sure that the forum and BeanBay work ok with them.

49,705 Safari visitors so maybe not all you MatthewG.

The other interesting stat from the browsers hitting CS is that Netscape 4.x (2100) is well in front of Netscape 7.x (1260) and Netscape 8.x (1230)... we even get some Netscape 2.x users!

Yeah, I prefer FF too after many years of using it. Very easily configures to suit individual needs with the addition of a few extensions. Tried FF3 recentlytoo but after a couple of weeks, I had to go back to FF2.xx as FF3 was causing some strange screen lockups and truncation of webpages randomly. After going back to FF2.xx, everything works as sweet as nut again... 8-)

Not sure how recent you meant by recently but you might want to revisit Mal. I experienced similar quirks to what you described. Now its up to ver 3.01 in seems to have settled down

    Re: Google Chrome

Ive filed Chrome in the "nice first attempt, but doesnt work across all sites & runs only on windows." *Sounds awefully like IE 5 to me... *Or as the realestate agents would put it... *Its "Pure Potential" ;)

I do like the cleaner UI, but the stepped scrolling really bugs me. *As did the fact that it doesnt work with some aspects of facebook. *I dont know about you, but Id have tested the thing on the worlds largest social networking site before launch, even in beta form.

Ive also been giving Ubiquity a try in firefox, and can see a lot of potential for improving the user experience with it, even if you avoid the "command line" syntax & just use the context menu for the default behaviours. *In page translation is very cool for example, as is searching by highlighting a word on a page & entering a couple of key strokes.
Actually, I wonder if we could do a set of coffeesnobs commands for ubiquity. For example, highlight a bean in bean-bay, then use the "blend" command to search the blending room forum for posts containing that bean 8-)

Well Chrome is still a beta version. Having said that, Gmail still appears as BETA after about 4 or 5 years

What do you notice as the biggest diff compared to IE7?

    Re: Google Chrome

It has a compatibility view button next to the refresh button to accommodate sites made for older browsers (I had to use this for Coffee Snobs on the answer/reply post section)

If you highlight a section of text a blue arrow button comes up when you press it will search the net with those parameters

It also has private browsing – nothing goes to history when set-
Smart screen filter Help to protect you against deceptive and malicious websites which can compromise your data, privacy, and identity.

That’s all I have got to so far
But please have a look at the MS IE8 site as it has plenty more info

    Re: Google Chrome

Meanwhile back at the Google Chrome ranch:

Someone potsed this comment about GC on another email forum:

havent shut it down for 3 days, continuously opening new tabs and closing them.. *right now I have 3 tabs opened and it is using 52MB of ram.. *not bad, firefox would be upto about 260MB now and IE... *well, 500MB??

    Someone else added:

Very very fast, especially loading objects out of cache but doesnt support a bunch of stuff yet - embedded objects and weirdly the touchpad side-scrolling feature to scroll down pages.

Google Chrome will not show the regular look of "Quote"
Normally one gets a green box with white writing

Google chrome just gives you a different colour text on "Quote" without box

    Re: Google Chrome

    Ok an Update
I have been converted to Mozilla Firefox 3.0.4
with added Australian spell check and speed dial as my add ons
I dont say this often but "I Love Firefox"

I also tested Opera for some time and to this point in time Firefox just beat it to the post by a nose
That said Opera has released a new browser Opera 10 Alpha (might give a trial run soon when it gets to Beta release)

Both Firefox and Opera *are 3 times faster than IE 8 with start up and page loading, also more user friendly

Google Chrome has a little way to go with small tweaks to catch up with Firefox and Opera

Well its good to have another Qlder finally catch up with the rest of us ;) ;D

I have never tried Opera tho. I know it has its core of true-believers but FF has everything I need and more. One of its best features is the number of add-ons and extensions available.

Its a pity there are still websites out there that arent completely compatible with FF - including CS but its a minor annoyance. I only use IE because MS insists on only allowing it for viewing MS Update
