Any Canon Photo5 competitors out there?

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
    Hello.

Ive entered this years Canon Photo5 Competition and Im wondering if any other coffeesnobs have done so too. There seems to be a bit of a trend whereby coffee and photography go together.

For those unfamiliar with this comp, Canon post you a box of 5 objects when you register (everyone gets the same 5 objects) and then you take photos of the objects and enter them into the competition (you can enter one photo per object and you can only have one object in each photo). This years comp has now closed.

    So any photo5-ers out there?

    Cheers
    -Sanch

At the moment all the entries are up on the gallery on the canon website (and theres alot to trawl through):
    http://www.canon.com.au/photo5/gallery/default.aspx

but next week (i think) the finalists will be up there somethere

Theres a flickr group which some people have posted their images on:
    http://www.flickr.com/groups/canonphoto5/pool/

And just to pat my ego (!) heres one of my entries which i HOPE will do well:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/25715071@N03/2934022534/

Oh and the 5 objects are: red ribbon, tea candle, cocktail umbrella, crayon, bubbles

    Thanks for the comments guys!

Yeah i dont envy the judges, there are about 1500 photos in each of the 5 categories and quite a few really good ones. Theyve got a big job ahead of them!

I think the ribbon and tea light are my best hopes of getting into the finals. Now ive just gotta wait, and stop chewing my finger nails!

Brilliant Sanch and you describe yourself as a beginner. The lighting on most of the shots I saw was perfect. Great composition.

Your contribution is easily one of the best in the ribbon section

    Master of photography........

No way a beginner, dude, what are you doing drinking coffee?
You should be onto your third bottle of Bollinger by now. If those photos dont bring you the big prize, I dont know what will - you are very talented with the camera and you get my vote.
Subject matter is brilliant and composition is number 1 - I agree entirely with "flynnaus".
    Well done.
If you dont wanna drink the 1996 Grand Anne Bollinger, try the Moet et Chandon brand, but its not as nice. Ill begin drinking for you....... hope you win.

Re: Any Canon Photo5 competitors out there?

Hey thanks for the lovely comments!

The finalists were announced today on the canon photo5 website. My crayon photo made it into the finals for the amateur section which im very pleased with!!! I thought the red wine ribbon one was my best chance at making it into the finals but there you go.

Theres a week of voting (it ends 11.59pm AEDST on 10th November) and then the winner of each section (the photo which gets the most votes) is announced.

If anyone feels eager enough to sign up and vote feel free to... ;)

    Cheers,

    -Sanchia

Re: Any Canon Photo5 competitors out there?

    Hey Flynnaus,

The canon photo5 gallery can be found here:
    http://www.canon.com.au/photo5/gallery/default.aspx

Im not sure how the website works because when i click through the photos the same web address is displayed in the address bar, so i dont know how to link my photo.

So if you want to find it it is in the amateur finalists section of the crayon section. So down the bottom of the page you click on crayon and the default is the amateur finalist part and mine is the second photo there; the photo of the man in a business suit with a yellow crayon in his pocket.

    Cheers,
    -Sanchia

    Go Sanch!

...still think your ribbon was better than the 10 that made it.
    ;)

What is the accepted amount of post digital edit? I notice some of the finalists are far more photoshop than photography.

I am very much an amateur Photographer and I am jealous - but voted for you anyway. ;D ;D

I have never worked out how they select winners in these competitions. I have made the finals in a few and never got the top prize. That is life I only take photos between coffees anyway. Best of luck

Last photo competition I entered I didnt win either.
Even though my pictures were the best.

    The judging is soooo subjective.

Re: Any Canon Photo5 competitors out there?

Thanks for the comments and votes!!! I really appreciate it! I dont like my chances (the green crayon/tree one seems to be pretty popular as far as I can gather) but im still hoping!

Hey Andy! They allow as much photoshopping as you want, as long as its not totally cgi. There has been a bit of an online debate about that! I didnt do too much photoshopping really. The red wine photo was mostly original and I photoshopped the string out (which was holding the ribbon in place) and the balloon which was in the neck of the bottle (stopping the wine pouring out) and some minor retouching. Yeah I was a bit bummed that the ribbon one didnt make it, but it mustnt have been what they were after. I thought my ribbon one had a better chance than my crayon one (which wasnt really my style especially with the post-processing but I thought Id give it a go).

Yep the judging is really subjective! Theres alot of online whinging about what the judges picked but at the end of the day, 1) art is pretty subjective and 2) its canons competition and theyre going to use the finalists for promo stuff so they call the shots. I think they chose the ones that they did because they are using the images to sell their cameras so if the photos are really photoshopped or look really set-up and dont look like something a mere mortal (!) could take, then it might inhibit them selling e.g. their 450D line to people transitioning from point and shoot to DSLR. That was my thoughts anyway.

This year the competition has been split into an amateur and professional section. Last year there were the same amount of prizes but 10 finalists for each category and then 2 winners. There werent many entrants in the professional category and so the quality of the amateur finalists is sometimes better than the pros (have a look in the pro bubble section; theres a photo of a blue sky with bubbles in it! :o )

    Cheers
    -Sanchia

I didnt know they ran competitions when Box Brownies were around or I would have entered. ;D ;D ;D

Sanch, I thought the bottle and ribbon was pretty dam good and I would also have picked it as a finalist. But then again from my results in competitions I am no judge, and never likely to be. ;)

Re: Any Canon Photo5 competitors out there?

Bad luck Sanchia and congrats on getting that far. Youre the winner if you go by CS vote!! (can we still get a cup of Sanchs Silvia espresso *:) )

Its ironic that Canon are looking for promo material for their camera gear but PS is doing the work, not the camera. Whats to stop some competitors handing their amateur shot off to someone else to do the professional editing and then passing it off as their own.

They should have one at a set location where the competitors have only their camera gear and subject material and they load the result straight up on a computer with only cropping/resizing allowed.

    Better luck next year!

I had a few minutes and started scanning some of the entries... Some people have a knack and others just put it out there...

Loved your where there is fire there is smoke...

Would like to have seen you get your lens however you got to the finals and just like making coffee... It is the Journey and taking the time to take in what else is around you...

    Great job...
