Dropping in to say Hi!!! and software question

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
Hi all,.. hope everyone is well,.. and I miss you guys. I have dropped in a few times for a quick read but really have no idea what has been happening on the forum lately.

Ive been busy trying to get my little online business going....erm and failing miserably at that. I had almost given up and was about to crawl under a rock and eat worms,.. but then I had an idea.......

but... I am such a doofus.. I cannot figure out how to make this idea into a product and was hoping someone might have some knowledge in this and could advise me.

First,... the majority of my little online business is selling jewelry making tutorials that I have written. People simply purchase the ones they want and they receive the links via email to download them instantly. Getting the right traffic to my website is an ongoing battle as anyone who has and online business would understand,......soooooH.. a few months ago I looked at selling them on EBAY as well... to help drive traffic to my website but was faced with the new rules that downloadable files are no longer permitted on EBAY,.. and they now must be offered on CD.

Ok,.. for the software question;.... Does anyone know how I can make like an ebook on CD? I am not talking about just dumping 8 .pdf files onto a blank CD,.. I can do that easy enough. What I want to do is create a more profession product. Some of my tutorials are enormous,.. and all are very detailed and good value/quality for money.. so ideally I would like to have them on a CD that auto starts with some fancy title page graphics and be indexed with links to each tutorial. Having the entire CD of tutes be searchable too would be a bonus.

I have a printer that is capable of printing directly to the CDs,..have 100 printable CDs and sleeves ready to go...... but all I need is some knowledge of how to get the info onto the CDs how I want it.

Anyone have any ideas how i could do this?

    Hi Remy
    Check out http://www.dnaml.com/
We used to use as part of a website showing public/clients etc. our brochures, marketing reports etc.

Worked quite well and pricing wasnt too bad for what we used it for. When i looked last (2 years ago) i think they could accomodate use on a CD.
There are a number of formats it creates etc.

There are others available but not sure how good.

    Hi Remy

I hope your business goes well. Anyhow ... I just did a DVD for our caving club that included all our caves maps. I deliberately didnt create a "auto start" file as I have found them to be more of a nuisance than a help - particulary with "data" CDs which are not movies. I have often received CDs from other people with auto start - it doesnt seem to work for all operating systems or machines. I use Linux, OSX Macs & Windows. I think if its a movie disk then yeah - auto start is OK, but if its a "data" CD which contains PDFs then no.

What I did for my DVD recently was to create a plain HTML file called StartHere.html at the top level. That can be a catalog to all the other directories or files. It will always work a lot longer into the future than auto start.

Oh to make the CD searchable just create a HTML file with all the files/chapters/titles etc on it like a big table of contents, then anyone can open that up, find a chapter/title and the link takes them to that PDF.

    Hi Remy...weve missed you!

Dont have anything to contribute re your software question, though in regards to sales, if you havent already done so, you might consider trialling google ads, oztion, trademe, hotfrog, etc. to attract potential customers to your website. Also, local online newspapers often have sections dedicated to events and you may be able to post something there, or send an email to the editor and you may be lucky enough for them to write a story. If theres a community art gallery they may also be interested in displaying your work or referring to you. My apologies if youve aleady done this.

Perhaps the most valuable lesson Ive learnt in the last 9 months is that customers wont automatically come to you - you need to reach out to them.

    All the very best!

    HI

The latest Adobe package Ver 9 expended is not bad... There is a separate product called presenter (ver 7 is very e-learning focused etc and has all sorts of features that may assist) which also allows you to add voice and video and importantly; allows the user to chose what they want...

Like all these products however, it can take some time to get a polished product / package.

Biggest issue for the web page is getting your product out there and making sure the search engines pick it up.... Advertising can be significant cost but can also be a lot cheaper if you work smart and get others to pay you... The trick is not to end up with your own pages so full of adds that no one wants to go there.

Small number of sales at a large $$$ or large volume at small $. One of the other issues is repeat / returning clients and that is often around the management of "post purchase dissonance".

Any way, stay in touch and keep at it...

Oh and another thing ... ETDBW google and read chapter 2 of the Agenda which is where it is from...

Thanks Mike, I was wondering exactly that,..auto start being problematic. I too have had issues with auto start CD not working and having to locate the right file on the CD to get things going,. so you have confirmed this for me that it is not worth messing around to get something they will work for some and not for others. And yes my CDs will indeed be DATA cds anyway with .pdf files.

Wow thanks KK,...neat piece of software there. I have decided not to do auto run for this project,.. but I can think of a few other things where this autorun software would be nice to have.... some of my kids school projects for starters.

Thanks Mal, I just had a quick look at both of these and the eBooksWriter-Lite has a 20 page limit and I have hundreds of pages. The second one EBook-Maestro Free,.. the EULA states that there can never be a charge for any ebook created with this software grrrrr. Looks like I will probably need to buy a full copy so will go have a better look through all the suggestions and decide which one is best. Thanks again!!

Hey there Dennis,. I did google ads for over a year, & oztion (might give that another go though now that you mention it), and as far as I know am still with hotfrog, and I have my info on heaps of random craft OZ and craft US type sites, am up in some search engines, did heaps of SEO work and obviously need to keep up with that, have swapped links with a few other sites of similar/related subjects, and I list on ebay, etsy & dwanda...phew... I know there are a tonne more places too just cant remember them all off the top of my head but have it all written down in my little red book if you want to see some more,I had a laugh. I have not seen trademe yet though.

Things have slowed down to a stop on etsy which is unusual,.. and sales are very slow now from my website. Ebay...well.. just starting there again but I not confident it will be worth the effort after ebay and paypal fees are deducted. I have sold a few things on ebay since I started back but all of which I would have been better off not making and selling the items because it was not worth the money I got for the items(then take off fees *sigh*). So much work for pennies. It doesn not make sense for me to work this way and so I am dragging the chain a bit getting back to ebay selling.

And yep,.. I know... ya gotta keep reaching out to find your customers.... Im not sure I can reach anymore... nothing seems to work and I think I am close to calling it a day (like a million other online businesses I suppose),.. I just dont know what more I can do.

Anyhoo,.. I know you can relate... it is tough.

    Hi Remy,

Yep, good to see you back and good luck picking up your venture.

Unfortunately now is not a good time to be a seller on Evilbay or anywhere else..... but a great time if you are a buyer - and are prepared to spend money!

Although people here should be confident in the local economy - the arent - and just arent prepared to spend money on "discretionary" items.... Lots of small businesses over here are laying off staff as things arent selling. :( :(

I just picked up a second-hand 240V generator on Evilbay (in "as new" condition)..... for less than 1/3 of new price (and I was the only bidder)! ;)

So good luck with your business venture.... you will sure need it at the moment.

Thanks AM, an Adobe product might be the way to go (tho cost is the problem),.. it would be my first choice because all of my .pdf files work problem-free with Adobe Reader 5.0 and up, and all of my past customers have installed Adobe Reader. Though I do know they work on *the Mac version of pdf reader with the preview turned off.

Re my website,. repeat customers is common, in fact most customers have come back and purchased several of my tutorials and many buying all of them.....erm and yes there is an obvious need to get get on and write more (which will generate more sales I know) but I am so flat atm (creative self has died and gone to heaven it seems). Just need get this CD created and listed on ebay,.. and hopefully get a few sales which should help to renew my enthusiasm and creativity to keep writing.

ETDBW. Yep.. I have been selling these for several years now and have never had anyone complain or even ask how to do anything in my tutorials because the instruction was not clear. I am forever telling people to email me anytime with any questions they may have,.. I have resent tutes many times sometimes up to a year of more after purchase when they lose their tutes in a HD crash. *I am ETDBW thats well known in the jewelry making circles, probably too ETDBW,I had a laugh because offer extra tips and tricks and any other knowledge I have regarding wire, tools and other materials etc...I do make myself very available to my customers which has become quite time consuming at times, but I take this to be what I need to do,.. to offer a good product and service for their money. Nevertheless I shall definitely read *the link you gave me. *

Oh and I got your message via my Website btw,.. thanks and yes I agree with all you said... tis a work in progress that website.. and I need to keep going with it to tidy things up and get it to look more streamlined despite things looking gloomy right now. I was in the process of doing just that, but got distracted about mid way through the design change and re coding/validating of all the revised pages, so now it looks rather unloved and poorly thought out *snif*.

    Thanks again AM,.. much appreciated

Hi JavaB, thanks and yep youre so right,.. it is a terrible time to be a seller. And doubley unfortunate for me is that things have gotten so bad so quickly for us in the past 6 months, I havent got a Brass Razoo left each week to enjoy the buyers market on the evil one right now,.. and hence my panic/urgency to find another way to boost my sales with the creating of this CD product. Ive even worded the kids up a few days ago..not to expect Christmas presents this year(my three kids and myself have Birthdays before xmas too ack!) Normally I have bought all their Christmas and Birthday presents by this time, but I cannot bring myself to spend a cent. I have bought nothing because of our current situation and the bills due to come in over this period as they normally do and I do not want a massive MC debt after xmas on top. *I have never been in this situation before and it is scary when youre mortgage just keeps growing, not coming down. So its not looking good to buy presents for any of them this year. *They understand and I told them it will be different next year and so I am really working now to try and fix things so it will be ok by this time next year,..too late for this year me thinks.

Our problems began when hubbys on-call wages was stopped (even though he is still on-call 24/7). His wage dropped by 1/3 and that was enough to put us in hot water 6 months later. *Local economy has been a little to blame especially when you consider petrol prices here and foodddddddddddd... OMG WTFrock ... Ive only been buying the basics for the past 6 months now,.. no fancy stuff and only items on special and still my grocery bills are horrendously high for what I am getting compared to say 2 years ago. And so now with my sales also slowing to nothing more than a dribble because everyone is worried about the the current and future economy and probably their own money uncertainties... it all ads up to a real sucky situation. Unnecessary items are the first to go when things are tight...and my products fit in that category.

    Remy,

Im a long way from being any good at PR (I gave up private practice cause I couldnt live on the income!).
But it seems to me that making stuff would be cheaper than buying, so with the economics the way they are, would that be a selling point for the tutorials?

Remy one of the ways of cheating Ebay is to sell the product for a very low buy it now price of $10 or under but to jack up the postage and handling charges to outrageous levels>$40 to make your profit/time worthwhile. You only pay ebay and paypal fees on the sale price. It seems shonky and some people dont get it. I bought some DVD/Rs when they were fetching 35 38$ + postage from a seller who wanted a staggering 35$ for postage to which she had got several comments about the cost. Thing was I bought the discs in the auction for 99c total bill 35.99 still cheaper than the 35 + 5 postage lot that were commonplace. She pays fees on 99c I am still infront and happy.

Also Pay per click advertising will ensure you are up the top of google searches, dont forget to check common mistyped words and include them in your meta data.
