    Has anyone tried KHAT?

Khat is a stimulant plant (similar to coffee) found in Yemen and Ethiopia, the birthplace of coffee also.

It is not yet illegal in Aus, but I believe it will be soon.

So has anyone tried this? What are the effects? Do you recommend trying it?

I found a place in Kings Cross that sells Khat, but I never got around to trying it. Im in Japan now and it Illegal here!

Im just really curious as to weather its really similar to coffee?

Not sure if it can be used in coffee comps either???

I heard of a guy who makes tea from it and sells it in his shop, I cant mention the name as its an under the table thing.....

    Cheers TG

Khats not for me, I think Ill stick to my caffeine addiction!

I read about it a while ago in the book, "The Devils Cup" where it talks about it being somehow related to the coffee tree family, then again it was a while since I read that.... Still a great read for coffee fans!

Another good read is Antony Wilds Coffee - A Dark History,

In it he mentions a drink called kafta which was made from the leaves of the qat plant as far back as the 1400s.

Qat today, he says, is fairly popular in Yemen. The leaves are chewed when fresh, otherwise they lose potency,

Because of airfreight, he claims its now finding a world-wide audience.

    Re: Has anyone tried KHAT?

I discovered an enormous Khat tree in Nedlands the other week... or atleast someone else did. This tree is probably 20m tall and in a front yard across the road from my friend. Two dark skinned guys who obviously know Khat when they see it sped up to the curb, one jumped out and climbed the tree ripping branches down. The neighbours ran out screaming at the guys who fled with their score to the car and screeched tires down the road. We went out to see what was going on and the neighbour explained what the tree was the the troubles they have from immigrants to who eachother about their tree (its obviously been happening a lot). They gave us a shopping bag full of leaves to try ourselves. I used a mortar and pestle and made a tea. It tasted horrible but the effect was a mild sharpening of the senses not unlike caffeine however probably a lot less of the racing heart sensation that you get from caffeine. Im not sure if this stuff is more extreme if taken in larger doses but I thought it was pretty harmless and would love to see tea shops sell it! Im sure its only a matter of time before the USA use it as an excuse to make villians of countries where it is cultural, as they did with marijuana to the mexicans, and coca leaf to the columbians.

In any case, for people interested I think this stuff is harmless. Id be taking more caution when having codeine in a Neurofen plus tablet than I would with this stuff. Off topic but another interesting fact actually... codeine is infact morphine with a methoxy group added to the molecule. When you take codeine for your headache, it is metabolised in your gut converting 10-20% to morphene which is the painkiller. Morphene is synthetic heroin. It disturbs me how society is so confused with what is good and bad substances for human intake. One amphetamine is bad for junkies, but another is good enough to pump into our dubiously diagnosed ADHD children to help them pay attention. Were all mad! Moderation is the key (e.g. I have a single shot espresso in the morning and no more).

haha yes just one! Maybe two on the weekend. Im still young and want to be drinking coffee into my old age so I must think of my blood pressure! I get worried when I see coffee fanatics on this website selling off their premium equipment for medical reasons.

I was too stunned at the "single shot" comment to reply.

Now that Im over the shock, Im with Luke.

I start the morning with a doule and have another at 10am and a third one at 3pm.

Im 48 years old and my blood pressure is text book perfect.

"Medical reasons" could be many different things.

Strongly agree here! im new to the forum and as much as LOVE my coffee, i got to be honest and ive only signed up to this website to find out more about the Khat plant...i have quite a natural bushland garden as it is and i think the khat would look great!!!!! I just wonder if anyone knows where to get it from??? Im in WA so the seeds are almost impossible to import from a different state, ide be dreaming to get it from overseas, and i dont really fancy going into garden shops asking for it (specially at the moment with all these storys of people stealing the leaves!)

If any one has ANY info or contacts dont hesitate to email me!

    Re: Has anyone tried KHAT?

I bought some Khat recently online:

    mod edit commercial link removed

They are Ethiopian exporters of Khat and they walk you through how to import it legally.* I paid an extra $50 and they did all the paper work for me to get my import permit.* Was really good as tea. Gave me a really nice feeling.* Have to buy at least a Kilo though so youll have plenty of it.* I recommend anyone interested to give it a try.* Good stuff.* Ive been to Ethiopia before and all the talk about negative social effects is nonsense - very benign plant.* Just like anything else, dont abuse it and youll be fine.*
