    Nooo, my coffee cup broke!

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I came out of a OH&S meeting yesterday, lobbed some freshies in the Mazzer and loaded up the Presso, and while I was wiping out my mug doing a risk analysis of the very task in which I was occupied, the cup inextricably slid from my hands and went head first on the ground - crack, clunk, tinkle!

    :( :( :( :( :( :(

Life just isnt the same this morning. Theres some subconscious comfort in the same stained and worn mug energising you as you blearily look over the work for the day. Im not sure I can go on.

OK it aint that bad but its surprising how much you notice somethings absence when its been there year in year out and then its gone, even something as inanimate as a mug!

The mug i use at home, is the first bit of crockery i ever bought for myself, back about 22 years ago. It says

    When In Doubt Mumble

How it has survived so long i do not know, but on the day it breaks, I know i will feel sad.

So comiserations, you have my deepest sympathies.

Its amazing how time slows down as your favourite cup/glass slips from your grasp and plunges to its death on the kitchen tiles. *As it shatters into a million pieces your whole coffee drinking life flashes before your eyes. *Then, all that is left is memories.

My better half normally comes running to find me standing in the kitchen with an expression on my face not too unlike this one:

Yeah I think youre right - there was just this helpless feeling of "Its going to hit the floor, I hope it lands on a strong section of the cup, I wonder if I can get my foot in there to break its fall, ... bother." which went forever. This one had been doing service on my office desk for about eight years and with a bit of a wipe still looked as good as new!

Grieving is a natural feeling :(. The loss of a favored coffee cup/friend, takes a long time. Unless you find another favorite quickly. :)

Re: Nooo, my coffee cup broke!

Ive had the same work cup for 16 years - a friend bought it for me, its printed with Van Goghs Starry Night, and Ive always loved it. A couple of days ago there was and incident at work, during which my cup went flying - not dropped, it flew. While I watched it, I was torn between "Oh well, its had a really good run" and "Noooooooooooooooo" but there was no question of it not breaking - it had a very long life as it was. Once it hit the ground I looked, it seemed to be in one piece so I figured the handle had come off and maybe I could use it as a pen holder or something. Picked it up, turned it over, looked very carefully and.....nothing. Not a crack or chip. Twas my lucky day. :)

Nothing too serious, TG. I dont deal with chefs tempers anymore, but I do need to assist people with anger management occasionally. Much more rewarding. :)

I knew someone who instinctively did that, but alas it was with a carving knife - yep ouch!

    Cheers

I know how you feel, Greg. The day my United Video mug cracked down the side I was beside myself. It doesnt hold liquid anymore but Ive still got it hidden away in the cupbard in the hope that one day science may provide me with a means of fixing it.

I know the feeling! I use this set of cheap Irish china, and the teacups that came with it are so awesome. Theyre smaller than a mug and thin, but not the fragile thin that you could break with a fist. I love them so much, and coffee isnt the same without them. Ive broken two or three through the years, but luckily I still have around seven left.

I used to use a mug that was given to us by a customer. This customer borrowed up to the hilt on a fleet of trucks and (surprise surprise) went belly up.

Fleet somehow sold off to another lucky punter (no loss, miracle of miracles) who after some time, again, belly up.

Third time seemed the charm, when I left the Co, the 3rd company were still going ok.

Anyways, I used to always use that cup as a constant reminder of lending decisions that should never have been made. It lasted me for about 5 or so years at work, and it was only in my last 6 months or so that it seemed to get lost into the depths of someone elses desk.

Re: Nooo, my coffee cup broke!

During my teaching days, I was involved in HSC marking (Computer Studies). In those days, they would issue a limited edition HSC markers mug for each year.
Marking used to be done in one of the pavilions at the old Sydney Showground (e.g. Hordern Pavilion) which had concrete floors.

As you would guess, these occasions would be very quiet. Any conversations were whispered. The quiet was occasionally broken by the sound of a Ltd Edition HSC Markers mug smashing on the floor, followed by a cheer and applause, then laughter.

It became a tradition. with all in attendance waiting the inevitable first crash

Marked by whom, Den? The recently bereaved, or those enjoying the moment?

From my knowledge, no study was conducted on the quality of marking of those rendered mugless. And as for the latter: if your paper was being marked, would you prefer the marker to be laughing or frowning at the time. *:D
