    Its Freezing Here...

    Yes, I know...its WINTER!

But its chilly here...current OAT according to local weather station data is a very nice 0.2 degrees relative. Actual is about 3 degrees. That is at 10pm.

What is it like at your place?

(Inside however is a pleasant 20 degrees.)

(I think Ive mentioned before my interest in weather...)

    Re: Its Freezing Here...

8 degrees here but getting colder overnight.
This morning was only 6 deg but the rain and wind made it seem much colder when standing on the station platform for my train at 5:30am :o

I know we need the rain but a couple of degrees high would go astray.
With any luck the rain will set in for the next 8 weeks or so.

    Re: Its Freezing Here...

The weather report on the radiao last night explained why and how that today would be colder.
    They were right.

I had to duck out about 9:00pm tonight and it was bloody cold out there.
I back inside now...snug and warm.

The CS toolbar tells me its "8 degrees but feels like 4" outside.

8 degrees! Why thats positively balmy TG! ;D

What was the explanation that the weatherman gave for it being so cold?

(something to do with the high over us I daresay?)

Its a gorgeous frost here this morning... :o My back deck looks like it should be hanging off a ski lodge, not a outback home!

And it has reached -1 degree.

Went south to Napier (central north island NZ) recently and stopped 50km out of Taupo for the kids (and Dad) to have a snow ball fight. It was 1deg at that point. Got back to the winterless North expecting much warmer weather and we had 2 solid 0deg frosts. Back to over night lows of 13deg now, nice ! ;)

I really dont mind the cold...after going through the extremes of summer the extremes of winter are a very nice change!

im with you scoots, I just like weather. Dont care what sort, weather rules. I like winter because its not summer, autumn because its not spring, and vice versa.

I was hoping for some frosts while in the Blue Mountains on the weekend, but nothing happened there.

currently thinking to myself that I need a weather station so I can be very accurate with my ambient conditions when roasting. *cough* not because Ive wanted one since I was about 8. no, not at all. :P

Suprisingly, the Blue Mountaints doesnt get all that much frost. Something to do with the tree cover I think. Though We used to have 1 inch thick ice on the outdoor school tables during winter.

The plains just closer to Sydney get a lot more I think.

    Re: Its Freezing Here...

Thats not a bad effort for a frost Scoota Gal, but it isnt a patch on the frosts we get in Christchurch, and ours arent a patch on the ones they get in Central Otago.

Had some days in the last few weeks with a recorded high of around 6 - 8 deg but that excludes the windchill. 1 day managed to get up to around 1 before slipping back into the negatives again (effective temp).

We havent even had our first snow fall yet (get a few snow showers most years). Its tried a few times (sleet / hail) but not quite there yet.

Our back yard about this time last year.

    :o :o Ohhh Senator...

We came to Sydney from Christchurch in 1982. We get back a couple of times a year (not usually in winter though) and are presently in the early stages of planning a move back for family reasons. Pictures like that arent helping ;)

the kids actually did try the slide, only to have very cold and wet bums.

It was our first ever snow, only shifted to CHCH a few years ago from Auckland. It wasnt a big dump, only s few cms on the ground, but was still a buzz.

We arent in any ranges or Hills Mal, CHCH is pretty much all flat (Port Hills to the east, Southern Alps 150ks or so to the west).

I prefer the cold (I would owning a video shop ;)) but theory being that when you are cold, you can always put on an extra layer or 2 and warm up, however, when its hot, your buggered (sleeping in 20 deg or more heats?). My wife on the other hand, I think shes allergic to the cold.

-2 here this morning...with another big frost!

It will be firewood gathering this weekend at this rate!

We often have 30 degrees at night during Summer here, Senator. It is not a comfortable temperature to sleep in but as it is a dry heat and we have evaporative cooling, it can bring the inside temp down to a pleasant sleeping level.

Well it is above 0 here, by one degree!

The surrounding hills have snow on them.
Been a cold one, already 2/3s through the wood pile.

The car take 7 minutes and over 6kms of driving before the water temp even moves. Another 8 minutes and 7kms and its just got to operating temperture. COLD!

Lived and worked in a mining town in the N.W. of Oz a few years ago where weeks of 52C+ days were very common in the middle of Summer, without a cloud in the sky. Spent about 7 years up there and funnily enough, we got used to it after a couple of years and thought nothing more of it. Now, Winters there were really, really cold.... Used to get down to 18C sometimes :P

When I did have my bike (Oh how I miss her :(), I would go riding up and along the mountain near me (amazing rides up there) in Winter. I remember getting off at some point where I had found a cafe each time and hurrying in to the warmth...go to order a coffee...only to find my face is so numb that I literally could not talk, sometimes would even drool. The muscles just did not do what the nerves told them to. It was always very embarrasing. Happened time and time again because I needed to go inside to warm up and I feel like a fool if I dont order something so I would still try each time.

No...I just walk it instead! ;D

Nice warm snow boots + Nice warm snow jacket = Nice brisk walk to work!

Even leaving at quarter to nine for my 15 minute walk to work, there was still frost on the steps and hand rail of my house, admittedly on the western side of the house but still there this morning! :o

With such a short commute to work (ah...the joys of living in a country town!) the bike hardly gets time to even warm up, so I dont really ever ride it to work. The scooter sometimes gets to go, but rarely these days as Ive decided to take the healthy option and walk! ;)

Aaahhhh....You know about winters in Minnesota hey? ;D

Weve had very weird weather here of late as we morph from winter into summer.

A month ago with the ice barely off the lakes we shattered the record high temps 2 days in a row when the mercury soared to 100F/38C. Then a few weeks later (when those kind of temps while not normal arent that unusual) the mercury dropped to at or near record lows. We had 5 consecutive days of highs in the 50Fs (10-15C). Something that hasnt happened for over 60 years. The overnight lows dropped to below freezing in some areas setting new records.

At one point we had a temperature differential of 37C in the state with Granite Falls at 100F/38C and Duluth at 34F/first crack. These 2 cities are less than 200km apart! And no, one of them isnt in the mountains. We have no mountains here. The highest point in the state is only 700m above sea level! Duluth is a port city on Lake Superior, which is the lowest point in the state at 180m above sea level.

Weird weather indeed. It will no doubt be interesting to see what happens over the summer here. ::)

3pm in the afternoon, effective temp of 7deg and dropping fast I think.

The poor folkes in Dunedin tonight for the Allblacks v France test, I guess the students might be justified with a few couch fires on the banks to keep themselves warm.

I would think Java wins the "mine is colder than yours" thing, ided up lakes? I know I said I prefer the cold, but there is a limit.

One downside to the cold, its not good for umm, extra curricula activity

Not only do the 17,000 or so lakes here ice up the ice gets thick enough to support trucks and even houses. http://www.startribune.com/sports/outdoors/15570662.html Some people go seriously overboard and have ice fishing houses hundreds of square meters in size and 2 or even 3 stories high.

Limits? What limits? We regularly hit temps of -30C here in the wintertime with temps occasionally falling to the -50C mark. :)

But boy...its cold here today and I must say, the weather station is saying that its about 10 degrees but I think that the wind chill factor here at the moment is making it about MINUS 10 degrees! ;D

So...whats the weather doing in your backyard tonight? I mean, look out the window if you have to. Check the interweb page if you do...but dont feel as if you have to go outside if you dont want to! ;)

But, I dont mind the cold really. Ive actually been waiting for it to get really cold again, up until today weve had it pretty warm here for winter.

And youd probably believe just how many people come in to the shop and say "Its freezing out there today!" My standard reply was..."Yes, well...it is winter!"

Yes, it is a bit chilly isnt it Stan.
We did however have some real cold weather a few weeks back when it went down to around 13C (8C where i was, camping up in Cape York) for a couple of nights.

This will more than likely make Java laugh at us again... :P ::) :D
I had a laugh Actually weve gotten a break from the heat and had a bit of a cool spell here again ourselves. Wed been running daytime temps in the mid 30s with a bit of respite at night but for the last few days its been back to down-right comfortable here. Daytime temps have only been about 20 with overnight lows dropping to 15 or so. Wonderful temps for the heat of summer! I dont mind them at all!! Unfortunately the warmth is returning over the next few days here as we near the hottest time of the year for us.

    Brrr....

Only about 1-second crack outside at the moment but nice and toasty inside with the wood-heater going. Love Winter... 8-)
