    Points of Interest

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
I just came across this site http://www.poidb.com/ *It provides free downloads of POI for your GPS. *Turns out, anyone can start a "group". *They have all sorts of things including the "Best Fish and Chips in Sydney". In fact, Sydney seems a lot better represented with all sorts of things than Melbourne. *For instance, they have a POI for Telstra Exhanges for nearly every state, except Victoria. *Anyhoo, I was thinking there should be a POI list for "Best Coffee". *Anyone is allowed to start a "group", so there is no reason why we couldnt add it. *From what I see, it is a very slow and painful process, having to add them one at a time. *Id be happy to start it off, I suppose I could use the list here as a starting point. *I am thinking as Im writing this, that *(as anyone can add stuff - it does get approved by the moderator, but I doubt he/she would go out to sample the coffee *;D) so I suppose people could just add their own businesses, quality of coffee notwithstanding. *I wonder if the "owner" of the group gets a say in what can be added?
Anyway, I thought it was a good idea, (I am often in a situation when Im dying for a cup of coffee, but dont know the neighbourhood, so my GPS telling me where to get a good cup would be great!) but now I seem to have talked myself out of it. *:-/

    What do you all think?

    Re: Points of Interest

Sounds like a pretty good idea to me. I havent looked into it too much, but can you create a closed group of contributors, rather than having a moderator? I dont want to sound elitist but...

The only thing that worries me about this is that, if anyone can put a coffee POI in it, wed end up with a lot of crud (ie; bakeries with a machine shoved in the corner serving mass marketed low grade swill) and still be picking out which ones the good/great ones are to go to.

If we could make it a closed or restricted group, maybe then we could just have a select 10-20 people that could post the information from the State by State Good Coffee guide in CS.

    Cheers
    Di

    Re: Points of Interest

Yep, I know - thats why I made the distinction of
shoved in the corner serving mass marketed low grade swill
    .

You are a stand out in your area and I knew you didnt fit in this bracket so hoped you wouldnt take it as a plug against you. Unfortunately, from experience, it seems your bakery is an exception to the rule (a certain one in the Bri still springs to mind as being one of my more horrific experiences but there have also been a large number around Newcastle/Maitland that have come pretty darn close!) and Ive know that you definitely do not stock the aforementioned low grade swill - Ive seen the passion in both yours, and the owners, eyes first hand!

Anyway, enough grovelling to get out of being banned from CS indefinitely due to insulting a mod :-* :-* :-*, you know what I mean I hope when I made that remark...

    Witch!

    ;)

My legs were hurting from all that packpedalling, even though I was thinking of you as I was typing my original remark and tyring to make the distinction!

Hmmm, now, what was that about CS42, Den??? 8-)

I agree about that site having a long and painful process, Ive already tried it and given it away.

On my to do list is creating a POI file for good coffee places.

Its easy enough to do in MS Excel.
