Would it be worthwhile posting a 6910 FAQ? *
And how many newbs do you think will search and find it?
giggled like a schoolgirl in the car....

None read the stickies or search
You could be right, and on the small chance that they did it would seriously cut into your [s]cannon blasts[/s] post count ;D
If only... Care to step up and offer some support? *;) *We can take turns *:D

I hate forums where people ask and often get no response.. How many times do you see or search and find the same question... Yet never a response ??? *Or the same question asked a dozen times...

Edumication... Life is not all roses.... And some people need to be given a push with feeding themselves *;D *

The worse questions are one *like:
    • My coffee is bad, Please help....

    • My machine is making a noise, is this normal?

    • I want a TOP coffee machine for under $800.

No background, no information, no data, no nothing... Yet when you start asking questions, is as if you are already informed and are holding back the answer... And some even get a bit testy as if youre attacking them...

I will blatantly paraphrase from another Admin from another forum... I am a contributing member but not an admin.. I am a gaming Admin on a USA server... But that has much tighter rules...

    Quote:

    1. : Some users only want to download and think they know everything, so they dont read the full thread.

Later they have problems or questions and just post them even, if everything was answered already in the thread.

Not to mention that only a few users try the search function or Google before posting a question or request.

Im not blaming anyone here, I just tell you what is fact.

It just sometimes frustrating to get the same questions again and again and if we ask to use the search we are treated like it is an offence to point to the obvious

    2. : to update the first post of any thread here you have to be an admin.

    Etc etc etc...

On some of the US forums I am a member of, you are forced to read / ack a number of stickies.... *Search and posting rules are links on every topic page...

FAQ were developed for a number of games etc as the same question and answer would pop up time and time again.... *They were also in the stickies... *Links in the Admin sig and still the same behaviour... *

Tick and flick is the attitude of many... I want and expect an answer NOW....

The TOG clan, based here in Australia have a very heavy forum and while they have a number of admins... *Many of the posting rules are done by the system.. *Interesting, ya make too many errors and you get a Auto notification and if no action... Ya account gets locked... *Heavy and some time brutal.... But it works...

So is there a quick fix... NO

Can links and FAQs etc be developed... Yea... But who has the time to develop and or manage and maintain... * Furthermore most will not use any way and thus frustration for those involved..

What I should do is a simple list of important points on; *Roasting / What equipment to buy / General Problems and then include supported links to other How tos and guides... *Then when they post... A warm welcome and a copy and paste...

Now this could be even automated as part of signup / registration and delevered to ya PM for further reference etc... *The issue is that information changes and management of said info.

End of rant... Need some sleep.. Too many forums...

That sounds like quite a good idea, as WSully has pointed out there are some basics that wont really change (devils in the detail of course).

Most new members tend to ask the "what should I buy" question
Then come the "my espresso is bitter/sour/cold/hot etc" type questions

    Maybe an

    Espresso machine FAQ
    Grinder FAQ
    Roasting FAQ

"What should I buy?" doesnt have an answer.
Its simple a Frequently Asked Question.

When asked all it does is lead to more questions (which can be answered).
The answers to those questions can help the questioner make up their mind.

having a series of FAQ documents though is only one step away from guides, articles and the like. Then I think youre moving more towards something like HB or CG, which isnt a bad thing but is that what CS is supposed to be?

Sure, lots of questions are repeated. One of the many awesome things about coffeesnobs is that people with all sorts of different levels of exposure and experience come together to answer each others questions, interact, discuss, disagree, agree, poke fun at, share ideas, talk about cafes and converse about out lives in general.

Why boil even one part of that down to an FAQ and curtly direct any new member to read it before they are so silly as to bore the existing membership with another question?

I love CS for many reasons, the sense of community chief amongst them. I think that answering a new members questions politely and succinctly can only add to that and like TG said

I was hoping to have this added to the welcoming email Andy autosends to newcomers but, in hindsight, if the newbie might be overwhelmed by it - if they bothered to read it.

The fact of newcomers to a forum asking the same old questions is up there on the inevitability scale with death and taxes.

We may as well accept it, make them feel welcome and help them. I think its more important that new people feel comfortable posting questions rather than potentially running the gauntlet of exasperated CSers facing yet another question on what should I buy?

Anyway, enough from the preachers pulpit.

I guess one of the issues is that when 20 people all post "my EM0480 is too course"or words to that effect... *Then after a while; some of us dont bother repeating what has been said 19 times before... *Thus a new user get no reply and may not bother coming back... Or they catch me in a bad day and get their answer and then dont come back *:-?

We as a community can not help every one... *And other than the more commercial Auto that are managed by sponsors... We also tend to dismiss them and they flock to all sorts of other * forums and or just give up on coffee.

Maybe a NEW topic for Auto Owners... *Assistance in teh first instance; *should by the nature of coffee, have them come over to the dark side of semi and manual systems soon enough.. *And besides; they still need good beans = BeanBay..

Maybe a special blend for Auto users ??? *Even more opportunities to assist and edumicate.....

The OP is a sticky on this Board: http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?board=Discussions

Re SuperAutos: we have the choice of remaining steadfast CoffeeSnobs and refuse to enter into any discussions about superautos, or we embrace it and start a new CS Board as suggested. I tend to lean towards the former as we are a group of people who care about coffee preparation rather than just place a cup under the spout and push a button.

I was hinting that support as to All things coffee be provided... Are we not COFFEEsnobs and part of teh community is about education as to Coffee and Beans etc...

    A: Different roasters supported
    B: home grown beans
C: Levers / semi Auto / Manual / Drip / Pour over / filter etc etc

Thus why turn away a potential cffeesnob; just because that got sold a SuperAuto... Have a separate topic and over time they will come across as they learn about coffee.. *

They still need to understand Fresh Beans / Grind Size / Tamp *(all be it that some of these settings are adjusted by a program - rather than through physical contact?

Are we not open minded ? *

If we are to discriminate agents Super Autos.... Where does that leave some Sponsors ??? *And some users ?

Opps... I think my OP as to; how to manage support, is getting OT..

We need a RED Zone for rants...

    1. Access the CS Discussions area > General Coffee Related

A miss understanding.. I was referencing this one... *http://coffeesnobs.com.au/YaBB.pl?num=1224157582/34#34

We all ready do... As to highlighted above... "we may as well make room for Instant Coffee or Stale Supermarket coffee"

In general it is about about *Equipment *and Raw product...

A: Supermarket beans are mentioned in just about every post as to Stale Vs Fresh *;)
B: Instant is bagged all the time... Equipment = Hot water (Still a requirement 92c) , Cups... Even stickies on cups

Besides.. Andy does not sell Instant or the standard Supermarket (stale beans) and neither do teh SPONSORS... So other than some bagging... There is nothing in it. *I still say that users of super Autos have a place... *Other wise a loss of potential for Fresh beans and conversion > upgraditus to a Semi / manual system. *Why cut ya nose off to spite ya face ???

Thus, I guess we agree to disagree on that one..... *

They have their place guys. With the right setup, they can deliver a large workforce a far better coffee option than the majority of the marauding coffee vans.

Why is a dedicated SuperAuto section needed? Its not like we have a section for every possible type of machine out there. Posts about SuperAutos can be (And already are!) made in the appropriate Coffee Equipment section as determined by price. The same as a question about a manual, semi-auto, or auto machine is (Supposed to be!) posted.

If the home page becomes overly cluttered with too many forum names on it people will simply ignore the existing organization and make posts anywhere. We already see this happening with some new, and even existing, users. The more forum names we add the worse the problem will become.

Agreed - no argument about that. Ive had good and bad coffee from a SA. Ive seen them work well in an office environment.

The posts we usually get on CS about them are "Should I buy one" and "whats wrong with my superauto". We dont get questions about technique or best beans to use.

Anyway. Im happy with Javaphiles response.

Out of curiosity, what makes a blend SA friendly?

Im not an authority Steve, but what seems to work well for me, and what customers like, is a blend with a larger proportion of lighter roasted coffee.

Its all in how you hold your tongue when you press the button ;D

I agree that you can post in the appropriate price category for information about super autos, just because the poster may not get the best advice about the machines form this forum doesnt mean we should shut the door to them (reformatting their hard drive on the other hand).
