I cant believe theres no iPad thread!

Ok - I have not yet seen anything to do with coffee for the iPad so perhaps it is not relevent. Does anyone have an iPhone app that has a coffee purpose? Would it translate to the iPad?

There are a couple of very good coffee related iPhone apps, although one is very Melbourne-centric.
The first is a great review app that is incredibly handy and the other is a bit of a how to/reference guide to making espresso.

    Both are excellent.

What an utter disappointment. After so much hype, Apple have really failed to deliver here.
    - no multi-tasking
    - no usb ports
    - 4:3 instead of 16:9
    - no cameras
    - touch keypad
    - the name

The list goes on. I am an apple addict and for the first time think apple have really failed here. Either:
    - Steve Jobs is about to die and wanted to get his pet project out the window asap
    or
    - they wanted to keep these new processors (A4) under the radar so delivered the first one in a sh!t product
    or
    - they spent too much time basking in their own glory

    I love my iPhone, though!

Talking of coffee applications, Di Bellas now has a free iPhone application also that locates your closest Di Bella cafe. Havent given it a real good run for its money yet, so I cant really comment on how good it is, but hoping to test it out in the next couple of weeks.

Now a true App and a Quality focus, would allow you to fill in a short survey and send..

    A: To the Cafe, and
B: A CC: to Di Bella

Dont hold ya breath... Most apps are about selling and ticking boxes, not real outcomes.. :D

I think i have have to disagree that the iPad is a dissapointment.
Yeah it has no camera but whats the point? Its so big it would look stupid and if you had a camera it would need more then 2 megapixels and the quality of an enlarged picture would look dodgey.

It doesnt need USB because its not for external products. Besides you can put your photos on to it with the external add on that downloads your DECENT photos straight onto the iPad. USB ports would also increase the thinkness which isnt what apple is going for here.

Can i also point out the touch pad is much better then the one on the iPod and iPhone because of size.

But yes the name is terrible. I also think that the price range is excellent and fills in the gap between iPod touch and Macbook. The iPad is not a complete media overload because of costs. it reduces the market they sell to. I think apple have done well with the latest edition.

    But thats just my opinion.

Apple already has almost exactly what you seem to have been hoping they were going to announce; its called the Macbook. Lets double check that shall we?

    Multitasing? MacBook has that.
    USB ports? MacBook has that.
    16:9 screen? MacBook(pro?) has that.
    Camera? MacBook has that.
    Physical keyboard? MacBook has that.
Half decent name? MacBook has that.

So everything you want is in an existing product.

I like the ipad. Even more so than the iPhone, itll be driven by the apps people make for it and how they take advantage of the touch screen. Its not meant to be a desktop replacement, at most its an evolution of the netbook. For me its perfect. It probably will replace my iMac. Simply because its portable and intuitive. I like how Ill be able to casually browse the net on the couch, use it as a nice recipe book in the kitchen, and then if I need to do any real work on it I can go upstairs, stick it in the keyboard dock and fire up iWork.
For me its perfect, but I understand that as it is, it probably isnt so great for most people. All I can say is just wait until The apps start rolling in.

Cool - a bigger screen version of my 2002 vintage iPaq (which I use for the same) :)

Im sure Apple will have another mass market category killer - their successful strategy (since the Newton) of waiting 5-10 years for the technology to mature, sexing it up, adding a content store, reasonable prices and lots of hip marketing.

I am a MAC fan (have an imac, iphone etc). And love most apple products

I dont see the point of the iPad in its current form. I think that in one or two generations, Apple will get there.

I bought my wife an amazon kindle - which is a brilliant device - designed for reading books. I dont think the IPAD can compete with the fact she charges the battery once a month, does not have to worry about her eyes etc.

The apple does not compete with the kindle, does not have the full function of a laptop and does not offer more than a phone (other than size).

I would not buy one. I think it will be interesting to see whether their name alone can drive sales.

    Re: iPad

I think they will fit in great in schools. Interactive text books, computing power better than a graphing calculator with a touch screen the user interface can change to suit the application (note things like graphing calculators become just applications rather than independent device that cost $150 or so) and we havent even considered that it can connect to both wireless and 3g. As an educational device it is cheap compared to any other device that can do those thing and as for netbooks and blackberries I mean those things are like sooooo five minutes ago.

Ben S - I reckon that the Kindle is awesome too and would consider it...but dont have time now to read real books let alone the ones on a screen! It might be even more tempting a device once you can download your fave magazine on it too...

Apple sells estimated 120,000 iPads on the first day!
    www.thetechupdate.com
Initial estimates show that over 120,000 iPads were pre-ordered on friday, according to Investor Village. And if you thought the iPad would be a fail, you have no idea. It was also estimated that Apple made over 75 million dollars of only pre-ordered iPads, in just one day!

I think its disappointing that people buy products because of who makes it instead of whether it actually is a decent product.

For less money than the iPad, why not just go out and get yourself a netbook.

Personally, I have a notebook, a macbook pro 15inch screen, its nice and light, has an awesome keyboard, excellent build quality, Ive a 3G connection... those netbooks you speak of, Ive yet to see one that had a good build quality, a quality screen, fast processor, or anything else I want in a notebook.. If Im going to get a notebook Ill get one worth the money.

Ill be getting an iPad, not because I need a portable computer (again, already have one) I do want it to watch video, read books, play games, surf the internet, Connect to social networks, occasionally write an email (and really occasionally) maybe make a skype call, occasional music, what ever else is available for the iPad app wise.

Personally, I dont want another computer, I dont need one, Ive a notebook, what would I want a poorly built netbook for.

    Re: iPad

    Would you go that far?
Not sure i would as i need to have the fresh coffee to keep me going.

I am finiding i dont have enough time to explore all apps available for integration and moving data to and from a network environment, and of course there are the games to play as well *;D

Its a shame that they didnt put a USB port in it imagine the possibility of running the temp monitoring software on it.

The frustrating part at the moment i see is the fact that while applications can edit MS Word/Excel, their storage areas dont match other storage areas for file sharing. To enable a staff member to grab a file of a server and dump to an ipad and then work on it remotely etc is cost effective and makes great use of their time.

An ipad + PC is cheaper than a light weight laptop and the battery life on the ipad to date has been superior to laptops.

We are looking at these from an external access view where we have staff using web based systems, we are testing the ipad and have also purchased a number of cheap clones running android to see what they are like as well. We are definitely living in the land of toys at the moment.

    Mal
