I dont understand all of this text speech, so real writing would be the way to go.
My 13 year old sends me a text and I cant make out what he is trying to say, some of the things people type here on coffeesnobs I have no hope.

Re: Auto change from s-p-r-o to espresso?

I would like posts with acronyms returned for clarification.
They may be understandable to the few but go over my head and I expect the majority of the wider coffee community as well.
    Where did previous posts go?
If comment is not required say so.

I have to say, in spite of my questions about disappearing topics a week ago, I for one am happy to see this thread changed. It was getting personal and unnecessary.

I think its very kind and certainly admirable of Andy to put up a poll on this, thanks!

FWIW YV Latte I dont understand a lot of the new ones. Just when you think youve got it under control, some kid invents a new acronym and even Google struggles to help.

fwiw :P for a lot of people these acronyms are ingrained through years of using instant messaging (MSN, Google Talk, AIM, ICQ etc) so its not just restricted to sms on phones.

however, i think there is no point in communication if half of your audience has no idea what you are saying.

ps i suppose im of the generation that invented and uses these words and even i have to look up urbandictionary.com every so often!

Re: Auto change from s-p-r-o to espresso?

I noticed that too but then again I was one that voted that way.

I think I lean towards the whole word being written correctly and not minding the use of acronyms.

FWIW if the acronyms were auto-corrected Id be OK with it but still use them as shorthand when typing.

    Yeah it is,

but that coupling (see/use vs autocorrect) is a close run thing.

The other two by comparison are quite clear cut. Vehemently so in the case of expresso.

So what does this say? Coffeesnobs are particular about their own vernacular, yet dont care much for the English language overall?

Welcome to Coffee vernacular Snobs ;D

    Exactly....
Isnt an acronym only used to shorten the need to write/type it in longhand.

You couldnt be worried about it being converted unless you were trying to convey a certain coolness/hipness by using it.

I think that was my original (not very well sold) point. *I thought that if people typed the shorthand and the website did some auto-magic to turn them into real words that would be a benefit, not a hindrance to good communication.

From my own perspective, while I know what as far as I know, I had a laugh & FWIW mean, I still have to pause and translate which is a chore in the middle of a paragraph.

So apart from as far as I know, I had a laugh, FWIW the other (cringe) one giggled like a schoolgirl what others get used by people?

Re: Auto change from s-p-r-o to espresso?

What I really cannot stand is the preemptive text stuff that decides it knows what you are going to write before you have written it - I dont think one device has ever got it correct for me and then I spend 10 minutes plus working out how I can write what I am trying to without the computer deciding it knows better than I do and changing it. Just let me write and p off computer.

As far as autocorrect goes, as long as it doesnt mimic the damn thing above and change everything I type, then it really doesnt matter to me - googling a new acronym aint so bad, and having it spelt out for me aint so bad.

Just dont predict my every word please!

yeah, good point. It would have been more accurate for me to say I first learned and used them on IRC, which was basically my first exposure to teh interwebs.

Not to get too far OT but if one wished to be more precise/pedantic my earlier statement should be corrected so as to read:
Heres some sites that cover the majority of [s]acronyms[/s] initialisms:
The majority of the terms being discussed here (I had a laugh, IMO, giggled like a schoolgirl etc) are initialisms, not acronyms. Per most dictionarys/linguists an acronym forms a word such as laser, AIDS, and scuba.

Initialisms predate the usage of PS by many centuries. Initialisms date back to at least ancient Rome. Technically PS is not even an initialism as it stands for postscript. A single word, not two as is commonly thought. PS is more accurately an abbreviation.

<sigh> I knew I should have put this in my previous post.

To be really pedantic here is the full etymology of postscript: The term postscript traces back to the 16th century and is derived from the New/Modern Latin postscriptum, which is derived from the neuter of postscriptus in Latin which comes from the past participle of postscribere to write after, from post- + scribere to write.

The only time/usage of the term with it being two words was when some modernists deviated from the rules of Latin and when using the old terms in their modern language would apply the new languages rules (In many cases the new rules hadnt solidified yet.) to the old languages terms. In this case some English speakers turning postscriptum into post scriptum. Most likely thinking it was right because of the PS abbreviation. They then tried to formalize their bastardization by changing PS to P.S.. A bastardization which has survived to this day due to widespread use even though the English language has adopted postscript as the proper spelling.

I think it all started with Michelle needing an a-s-p-r-o (?). I need one now, having just caught up on the PSs and WTFs and BS.
