yep, in fact have it at home running my web and mail servers too...

Ultra portability in the event the hardware fails
Ya I use the basic stuff at home to allow me to do testing / run olld OSs and to go test apps / drivers etc ...

A couple of my mates are teh VM people for QH and the massive systems they have in place now are just mind blowing and have reduced downtime and hardware costs significantly..

the environment I look after has about 15 high end servers running esx 3.5 and soon to be vSphere 4. On those 15 machines, they hold somewhere between 4 and 45 virtuals, so at the moment the environment is around 350 virtual servers.

Then dont get me started on the stand alone boxes.....

About 2 years ago, i think it was about 30 hign end servers and databases containing medical records and they were running a rather interesting SAN with Navisphere for*the SAN administration..

One of their tricks is to *use the VMDK files to trouble shoot ??? *What is the motto "Do no more damage".. Great for this sort of work and the ability to test, the fix prior to roll-out.

Virtual training rooms is a major $$$ saving.. *A stack of *dumb monitors and as students log on to the VM class; a VM student config is rolled out to you and when ya finish.. poof all gone. No ongoing PC hardware costs etc *

Also means the class room does not have to be a physical room *and fixed..
