Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
...and I felt the wave of relief come over me! Almost as good as the coffee rush from my latest Cuban acquisition. Anyone else finishing up a degree and care to share their joy?

For those of you interested enough, the new letters after my name are "MBA (Exec)". And I dont have to do any more uni...until I start my Master of Commerce next year that is :(

Congrulations Doug. Im glad to have my uni days well behind me. Got 3/4 of the way thru a PhD before getting ill with kidney failure & ending up on dialysis. Never managed to go back & finish it off.
On a brighter note, have had a new kidney for 5.5 years which is still going strong.

Congratulations! An MBA (Exec) is by no means an easy feat so well done at getting through it. I did an Advanced MBA a few years back while working and renovating the house...oh the pain.

So congratulations and enjoy the break before you start your Master of Commerce!

Re: so I just finished my last uni assignment...

I dont care about all that stuff much but I have to admit I was a little bit excited when I opened up my certificate when I finished my undergrad in accounting and finance. Its interesting though because I had to do two more units after that to do my CPA and they were both units that were in the MBA program but also exactly the same as units that were in my undergraduate course if I had have done them.

Is an MBA a generic course that provides you with skills for the business environment or is it more than that?

I have now done 2 1/2 years of CPA and have one unit left!!!!

I will then be privileged to have the letters "BBUS CPA" after my name

    Congrats on completing the course.

Re: so I just finished my last uni assignment...

    Hi Justin,

I completed my advanced MBA at the Grad School at UWA (on the banks of the lovely Swan River), 16 units of hard slog which included a wide variety of topics, some core units but you could also select quite a few as well (as a specialisation and hence the Advanced MBA; I chose Management).

I chose to wait a few years between my undergrad (Commerce) and completion of CPA, 6yrs I think, and I chose to attend classes rather than do it external. This was invaluable, as it was the interaction between people, sharing and hearing others experiences at work which made the difference to me. There were a few people who went straight from Undergrad to Postgrad without work experience and they really struggled (which also made group assignments a little more difficult too).

So I guess in answer to your questions, whilst it does provide you with skills for the business environment, is it more than that. Some places do offer a generic type course and others are quite serious about their product offering. A bit like coffee really ;)

The old addage is true, you get out of it what you put in...its being able to understand in greater depth what is happening around you at work and why, what you can do about it and thinking more strategically. For me, I came out of it more inquisitive about the world around me which ultimately led to more light bulb or a-ha moments. Its like a supercharged Commerce degree for people who care and want to make a difference to their life. (Plus the extra letters after your name looks cool too ;) )

    Hope this helps?

P.s. Congrats on almost completing your CPA as well !

    Congratulations Doug and Justin.

Once upon a time the average age for someone undertaking an MBA was 45. Nowadays, it seems common for people who have just completed their undergrad to enroll in the MBA directly thereafter.

While I applaud the commitment to learning, I think its a bit of a pity that a "Master of Business Administration" can nowadays mean, "I understand the theory but have little or no real life experience in a commercial environment."

Perhaps an tangential answer to your question Justin, but an answer nonetheless.

Thats what I was thinking. The people in the classes I was talking about were mostly Oseas students and their grasp on some of the seemingly simple concepts and ideas was lacking(and that particular unit was their last!!!) Didnt give me much confidence in the course. Obviously an MBA is not an MBA is not an MBA. Would be nice if there was some comparibility.

I havent done an MBA and probably never will but I too believe that the practical experience is far more beneficial early on than more education. That is one good thing about the CPA. Once you have experience you can apply what you are learning.

    Idiocracy ;D

    OR

    Mediocrity ::)

    OR

Thats life today.. And it goes for most things...

Many of teh collage and unit courses we did 25 years ago are now need downgraded; to be little more that interest based learning :-X

What one needs is a true balance between Education and life experiences and teh old styled Trade and CPA for eg are better... Not perfect, but better.

    An interesting conversation.

Twenty years or so ago, there existed a defined progression - you go to school; go to some form of tertiary education; go to work, and then retire. The progression was clearly defined and once entering into the employment phase it was rare for someone to further their education. Today there is an expectation that formal learning is a continuous process.

An MBA was offered by very few learning centres, prestigious, and expensive. You would not be offered a position without the ability to demonstrate management experience. Today, tertiary institutions have a need to generate greater income, creating a proliferation of MBA availability, and what better way than to offer such a course as the MBA, to relatively wealthy foreign students.

The commercial sector must also accept some responsibility. They have created a greater demand for higher credentialed job applicants. These applications are usually screened by HR personnel and there is some irony in this. At the time I completed my post-grad work some 10 years ago, only 35% of HR personnel had any job-related degree. I dont expect that figure to have doubled since then.

Have subdivided and rebuilt and gotten married during my MBA, so its that much more fun juggling all the extra stuff...not!

Agreeing with the posters on here that an MBA with no experience is extremely generic and of little value. I did mine through RMIT, and they have the MBA and MBA (Exec), with the latter being for those with valid experience. I owned and ran a hotel for a while, so I got mine to formalise my existing business knowledge. An the average age has dropped somewhat, although at 29 Im still considered young-ish.
On a side note, my wife keeps referring to me as a Master of Balloon Animals :D

My experience proved to me unequivocally it was the mighty dollar that pulled the most clout with admissions....there were some admissions that genuinely left my self and colleagues scratching our heads :o
