    Problem laptop pc.

Gene Cafe Coffee Roaster $850 - Free Beans Free Freight
This could be a painful and long journey for me as i have borrowed a laptop for coretto duties. This one belongs to my nephew and he has had problems with it.

Problem with it is that when i try to download the roasting software a message comes up saying it has encountered a problem and it has to close, then the whole window shuts down.
The problem is not just that, but most pages i try to download, the same message appears, and i have to close it again. :-[
The only engine i can open is msn explorer and i cant open Mozilla.

Is there someone who is pc savvy who can give me a step by step to curing this so that i dont have to spend a pretty penny for a pc tech to fix it.

    Thanks, Gary

Sounds like a corruption and .net etc...

If Mozilla will not run, then your internet settings corrupt and or a Virus / malware on the machine... First guess OR some one has tried to clean an infection and not done a full job of it.

You could down load ALL the files you need from another PC and then copy the files across Via USB or even burning to a PC.

I suspect a virus but it may be a corrupt Windows file

As it isnt your computer, Id say take AMs suggestion - download the RoastMonitor s/w onto a USB memory stick and then copy it onto the lappy. Turn on the Write protect on the USB stick so it doesnt get infected or burn the s/w onto a CD instead and copy onto the lappy from the CD (safer)

You can also download the portableapps.com suite of apps onto a USB stick from a known good PC, then use mozilla or google chrome portable from the USB on the laptop.

Best way to prevent/fix most windoze issues is to run Linux..., but if youre not tech savvy and the laptop isnt yours, then youre probably stuck with what you were given. At least the portableapps setup would let you get browsing with a known uninfected software environment.

    Re: Problem laptop pc.

Never thought about transfering by USB stick. Have done that a few minutes ago and is now ready to log once ive finished with my 500gms of Bolivia Green Mountain Estate. *;)
Have done a dry run test using hot water. So far so good.

As far as it goes, have run the anti virus scans and anti spyware, but nothing turned up. Have run disk check but still have the same problem with corrupted data preventing internet browsing, so somewhere the internet settings is kaput. Will keep this thread informed so that my findings can help others. To be continued...

All i care at this stage is my desktop is running fine and the coffeesnobs data logging software is working on the laptop.

    Thanks so far fellas/gals *8-)

looks like you have "show hidden files" turned off

double click my computer, go to tool, options.

View files tab, scroll down and uncheck "hide system files" accept the security warning and there you go

    Re: Problem laptop pc.

Have unchecked that now. Have tried internet but still getting the same "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and has to close down. We apologize for the inconvenience etc etc"

Or am i supposed to show you the c:/\/winnt/\/system32/\/etc/\/

find a file called hosts, open it with notepad and post the results procedure?

I knew this would be a painful and slow process. :-[ Oh well, at least the roast monitor is up and running.

Keep the suggestions coming. I still want to exorcise the evil out of the thing. Be gone evil spirits. >:(

yeah, please post the contents of the hosts file

failing that, do any internet sites open?

are you able to pull updates for your antivirus software?

CP and then Internet Options and then set all to default

Also go to Add / remove programs and scroll down to the "Set Program Access and Defaults".

Still same, found the same "Hostname" but no "Hosts" as you suggested and tried opening it up, got a black small retangular screen come up for a millisecond and closed.
Internet access still same at this stage. Cant open Mozilla. Then still same notification on Internet Explorer.

AM, Have set all to defaults on Control Panel.
In Add or Remove Programs, the pc is currently set to "Custom" configuration/ default web browser with enable access to Internet Explorer and same for Mozilla Firefox.

I forgot to mention i always get a warning box about "AVG Security Toolbar was unable to connect with AVG 8.0. Please check that the program is installed and running etc etc." I have tried to download AVG security but its still the same story..."Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close down etc"
I have ticked off the "Do not show this message anymore" box and pressed ok but i keep getting the same warning everytime i try to open IE.

    Re: Problem laptop pc.

if avg wont pull updates, your infected.

download a rescue CD from here:

    http://dlpro.antivir.com/package/rescue_system/common/en/rescue_system-common-en.iso

Burn this onto a CD. reboot the PC, press f10 or f12 (depending on make of pc) and then select boot from CD. Make sure the pc is connected to your network via the network cable (i.e. not wireless), once booted onto the cd change to english mode. select update virus definition, then run the tool across your machine

let me know you get on

    Re: Problem laptop pc.

Im really lost now melbuurn :-[

Got a bunch of things on my desktop.
two autoruns, avira, boot, index, initrd, antivir, isolinux in two forms, license, vmlinuz, welcome, avupdate, html, licenses, after i loaded the cd into the laptop.

At this stage i dont really want to fix the laptop for fear of running out of time and patience/mental health.
As long as the roast monitor works when i eventually get to use it in anger, then its ok.

Well, maybe i can come back on the weekend and take in any more suggestions.
Thanks for putting up with me.

    Gary...

Not required to load onto the PC...

The trick is that when you burn the CD (Use CdburnerXP) you make it a bootable CD/DVD.

Then when teh laptop is booting and you hit the right key stroke, it will boot from the CD/DVD and allow you to run any number of cleaning and virus scans - WITHOUT your laptop files and or allow the virus to take over.

One needs a clean system / tool to allow one, to clean a dirty system. Thus the reason to boot from the cd/dvd.

Shame ya were not just next door... Do this sort of thing so often these days... But while some fixes are simple, many times one really does need to be hands on.

couldnt agree more with you AM.

Being an IT Consultant for close on 10 years now and this is something I see quite a lot. Luckily though, my clients now use my cloud offering where I tightly control what they can/cant get to!

I hate suggesting it but reinstalling windows would be easier than all the troubleshooting, then you have a clean install. Then you can load the likes of AVG & Malwarebytes and scan all your backed up data before copying it back. Thats what I would do.

Might take a while, but its a damn sight less frustrating when you dont know the ins and outs of anOS.

Just remember to backup all your Data and download all the drivers from the laptop suppliers website prior to re installing windows so they are ready to install.

    Me too,

Sounds like its a mess. Clean install, load malware and AV stuff, run the updates with .net and java and then load Andys software....

You then have a perfect roast monitor and can disconnect from the nasty net ;)

If you can get to the net at all, boot into safe mode with networking and search google for "house call" its a web based virus solution from trend micro and is free.
I have used many times to clear malware and trojans of friends pcs
